The Best Hot Water Bottle: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a hot water bottle
How much does a hot water bottle cost?
Good quality hot water bottles are already available for around eight euros. These are standard products that have no special design. If you want an appealing motif or a hot water bottle with a fine, high-quality cover, the prices can vary greatly depending on the quality or design.
For unusual patterns or shapes, you have to expect a higher price.
|Standard models with good quality||8€-18€|
What material should your hot water bottle be made of?
However, these are particularly flexible and heat-resistant materials, as they have to withstand a lot. You can also buy a hot water bottle with a cover or often order one as an option. The cover is usually made of felt or knitted fabric and feels very comfortable.
Decision: What types of hot water bottles are there and which is the right one for you?
Basically, you can distinguish between three types of hot water bottles:
- PVC hot water bottles
- Rubber hot water bottles
- Metal/ceramic hot water bottles
Which hot water bottle is right for you depends on your personal preferences. To help you decide, we explain the differences between the hot water bottles below and describe their respective advantages and disadvantages.
How does a PVC hot water bottle work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Nowadays, hot water bottles are mostly made of PVC, which has the advantage that the heat is stored for a long time. In addition, PVC is durable and resistant, while being soft and flexible to the body.
PVC hot water bottles are often odourless, especially if a high-quality base material has been used. Inferior types of PVC, on the other hand, can contain harmful substances that are toxic and carcinogenic in the worst case.
Therefore, when buying, make sure that the hot water bottle has a CE mark, GS test seal or TÜV certificate.
Furthermore, the correct handling of your hot water bottle is important:
- Use warm or hot water, but not boiling water! Otherwise, the steam will create high pressure in the bottle pressure in the bottle and the bottle may burst.
- Fill it only about two thirds full with water! Especially if there is more weight on the bottle, the pressure can be too high and the bottle can burst.
The hot water from a bursting hot water bottle can cause you painful scalds. A PVC hot water bottle is the right one for you if you are looking for a hot water bottle that warms for a long time and is made of a durable, soft material.
How does a rubber hot water bottle work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
A rubber hot water bottle is basically made of a natural material (rubber). With its soft, supple surface, it is very pleasant on the skin. However, some people find the typical rubber smell unpleasant. In addition, a rubber hot water bottle loses more heat than one made of PVC.
However, if you only use it as a bed warmer to fall asleep, this will hardly bother you. One problem with the rubber hot water bottle is that it becomes porous over time. Cracks can form and the bottle can leak. You should check this regularly.
As with the PVC hot water bottle, correct handling is also important with one made of rubber to avoid bursting. In addition, there are also differences in quality among rubber hot water bottles, which are reflected in higher levels of harmful substances.
Just as with a PVC hot water bottle, you should pay attention to the use of test seals. A rubber hot water bottle is the right one for you if you want a hot water bottle made of a natural basic material that adapts to your body with its supple surface.
How does a metal/ceramic hot water bottle work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The advantage of metal or ceramic hot water bottles is that you can heat the water directly in them. However, they can get very hot. To prevent burns, you should wrap them in a towel and avoid direct skin contact at all costs. Metal and ceramics are also not flexible to the body and can be hard and heavy.
Metal is a durable material. This also applies to ceramic hot-water bottles, but there is a risk of breakage if they fall on the floor. Ceramics in particular - but also some metals - are odourless and thus offer a good alternative for people who are sensitive to odours.
A metal or ceramic hot water bottle is the right one for you if you prefer a more indirect heat or if you want to avoid the artificial substances of the newer generations of hot water bottles.
Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and rate hot water bottles
In the following, we would like to explain the factors you can use to compare and evaluate hot water bottles. This will make it easier for you to find out whether a product is suitable for you or not.
In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.
Hot water bottles are available in many different materials. The most common material today is PVC or plastic. The above-mentioned materials have the advantage that they are quite resistant and flexible. They can therefore adapt to objects or bodies and do not burst easily.
Hot water bottles made of metal were mainly used in the past. Today, however, you can still find them occasionally. They must be wrapped in a towel to avoid direct contact with the skin, otherwise burns could occur.
The material of hot water bottles must be able to give off heat to the outside and at the same time keep the water warm for as long as possible so that it does not cool down. PVC, or plastic, not only fulfils this task best, but also offers the highest level of safety.
As already mentioned above, there is an infinite choice of designs. So it's best to think about who will be using the hot water bottle and give it some thought.
Hot water bottles are available with or without a cover. The cover gives the bottle an individual touch and can embellish any home as an accessory. The designs are very diverse. From a favourite football team to a self-designed cover, everything is possible.
There are also special shapes, such as a heart shape. Children particularly enjoy animal-look hot water bottles.
Standard hot water bottles are about 30 x 20 cm and rectangular in shape. In principle, a hot water bottle does not take up much space, so stowing it away should not be a problem. Hot water bottles are usually quite small and compact. However, there are XXL versions that might be suitable for you.
This type of hot water bottle has the additional advantage that it can give off a little more heat. There are also differently shaped hot water bottles, such as animal-shaped hot water bottles for children.
Hot water bottles can hold different amounts of water. The content can vary between 0.5 and 3 litres. Sometimes there are special models that can have an even larger capacity.
Basically, the more water a hot water bottle can hold, the longer it can keep you warm. Keep in mind that you should never fill up the hot water bottle. This will prevent it from bursting.
Facts worth knowing about hot water bottles
Who invented the hot water bottle?
It is still not known who invented the hot water bottle. However, the traces of the hot water bottle or bed bottle or thermophore, as it is often called in other areas, can be traced back a long way. People as early as the 16th century used something like hot water bottles.
They took a brick or a stone, heated it and wrapped it with a cloth. Then the precursor of the hot water bottle was placed in bed to keep warm, for example. Metals such as zinc or copper were then used because they were better conductors. It was not until the 20th century that rubber was added.
Compared to earlier materials, rubber is much more flexible and unbreakable.
How hot should the water in a hot water bottle be?
"Do not fill with boiling water" - you can find this advice again and again on hot water bottles. But why is boiling water not suitable for the hot water bottle? Water starts to boil at 100 degrees and slowly turns into a gaseous state. This produces water vapour.
If you fill the hot water bottle with boiling water, the bottle may burst because the steam expands and needs a certain amount of space. If the bottle bursts, it can be very dangerous. The result would be severe burns. Therefore, water should be filled into the hot water bottle at a temperature of about 40 to 60 degrees. The maximum temperature from the tap is usually 60 degrees.
If you use a kettle, you can adjust the temperature manually on some models. Or you can simply let the water cool down for a few minutes before filling it into the hot water bottle.
