The Best Hyaluronic Acid Capsules: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying hyaluronic acid capsules

In order to provide you with general and specific information about the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid capsules and to give you an understanding of the current state of science on this topic, we have summarised all the necessary information in the following chapters.

What are hyaluronic acid capsules?

Hyaluronic acid capsules are mostly used in cosmetics, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and dermatology.
Hyaluronic acid binds water molecules in our body and strengthens its structure.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that our body can produce itself. The acid ensures a stable framework of various structures in our body. But with age, the production of hyaluronic acid decreases and the ageing process follows.

It is precisely its effect that makes it special, because hyaluronic acid binds water. In the process, 1 g can bind more than 6 l of water. The combination with water creates a gel that helps our body in numerous situations. (1)

Because, as we know, our body is mainly made of water. Thus, there are many areas of application in which hyaluronic acid can be very helpful. You can read more about the effects of hyaluronic acid in the following section.

How do hyaluronic acid capsules work?

The ability of hyaluronic acid to bind water means that it can be used in many different areas of application.

The most common areas of application are:

  • Cosmetics
  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Mucous membranes

In the following sections you will learn more about the different areas of application.

Cosmetics

Hyaluronic acid capsules have become indispensable in cosmetics. They not only improve skin hydration and delay skin ageing, but also improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Hyaluronic acid capsules maintain moisture in the skin tissues. The moisturising effect protects the skin from drying out and ensures an improved quality of life and a well-groomed skin appearance. (2, 3)

In addition, an increase in skin moisture ensures a healthy skin structure. When taken regularly, the skin appears smoother and firmer. Thus, the age-related loss of hyaluronic acid can be compensated by hyaluronic acid capsules. (4)

By improving the skin's moisture due to hyaluronic acid capsules, not only dryness and wrinkles can be eliminated. It also leads to a general improvement in the skin's structure. This also applies to impure skin. (2, 3, 5)

Dermatology

Dermatology deals with the functions and structure of the skin, as well as the treatment of skin diseases. This includes blemished skin, acne, cellulite or signs of poor connective tissue, as well as wound healing.

So-called full face treatments with hyaluronic acid capsules can strengthen the skin and thus prevent blemished skin. Treatment with hyaluronic acid helps acne patients and reduces scarring. The deeper the scars, the longer the treatment time with hyaluronic acid capsules. Note, however, that in most studies of this kind, injections of hyaluronic acid have been used for a faster effect. (6, 7, 8)

By taking hyaluronic acid capsules, weak tissue is strengthened with moisture. Thus, poor connective tissue such as cellulite can be built up, renewed or strengthened. (2, 3, 5)

Hyaluronic acid plays a major role in wound healing. Wound healing is accelerated and improved. In wound healing, as well as in burns, hyaluronic acid capsules are not as effective as gels or creams. Therefore, gels or creams should be used for wounds of any kind. (9, 10, 11)

Hyaluronic acid capsules have an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect. This is why hyaluronic acid capsules are well suited for type 2 diabetics. After only a few days, wound healing and bacterial inflammation improved. (12)

Did you know that hyaluronic acid has prospects in dentistry?

Hyaluronic acid has recently been recognised as a treatment to improve healing after dental procedures for chronic inflammatory diseases. Treatment with hyaluronic acid has helped patients with wound healing after dental procedures, with chronic inflammatory gum disease and patients with mouth ulcers.

Ophthalmology

Hyaluronic acid capsules have not yet been sufficiently researched for dry, as well as tired eyes.

Whether capsules have a long-term effect and can thus prevent dry eyes has not yet been proven, as there are no studies on this yet. For acute use, drops are recommended. Hyaluronic acid drops work against dry eyes because our eyes consist of 98% water. Since hyaluronic acid binds water, it improves the elasticity of the eye. (13, 14)

Orthopaedics

Hyaluronic acid capsules have a wide variety of uses in orthopaedics. These include joint pain, as well as arthrosis and the strengthening of cartilage.

Hyaluronic acid capsules relieve general joint pain, reduce strain and increase quality of life. To prevent osteoarthritis, it is recommended to take hyaluronic acid capsules as soon as mild joint pain occurs. (15)

The population is increasingly suffering from knee pain in old age. In the long run, knee osteoarthritis can develop. Taking hyaluronic acid capsules reduces pain and strengthens cartilage (16, 17, 18)

Mucous membranes

Hyaluronic acid reduces pain and builds up a protective mucous membrane so that no damage occurs in the oesophagus.

Damage to mucous membranes can cause heartburn or reflux. Capsules taken reduced the belching and damage within 3 days. Follow-up examinations showed an improvement in the quality of life of the test persons.(19, 20)

When and for whom are hyaluronic acid capsules useful?

Basically, hyaluronic acid capsules are useful for anyone who has problems in the previously mentioned areas of application.

Hyaluronic acid capsules should usually be taken as a preventive measure and in the long term to improve the appearance of the skin, joint pain or wound healing. Since the capsules can absorb a higher amount of hyaluronic acid, they work efficiently and can be taken immediately in case of acute pain.

However, in order to achieve a targeted and good effect, it is advisable to take the hyaluronic acid capsules on a long-term basis so that the body can fall back on them whenever it needs them. Discontinuing the capsules will of course cause the effect to diminish.

How much do hyaluronic acid capsules cost?

During our research, we found that the prices of hyaluronic acid capsules vary greatly depending on the dosage form, additional ingredients and dosage.

Therefore, we have compiled an overview of the prices for better comparability:

dosage form additives price
drinking ampoules most vegan with additional extracts €50 to €219 per litre (360ml = approx. €20 to €80)
collagen biotin, vitamin C, zinc and more €12 to €60 per 100 g
capsules mostly little to no additives €18 to €60 per 100 g

Among the dosage forms, capsules are usually the cheaper choice. Collagen and drinking ampoules are more expensive. The reason is that collagen and drinking ampoules usually contain additional extracts, vitamins or minerals that work well.

The higher the dosage, the more grams are needed and the more expensive the product. This means that the price can vary depending on the dosage.

What are the side effects of taking hyaluronic acid capsules?

Hyaluronic acid is considered to be well tolerated and several studies have found no side effects.
Hyaluronic acid capsules have no side effects.

Every study that has looked at hyaluronic acid in capsules as a dietary supplement or hyaluronic acid in general indicates that it is safe to take. In addition, hyaluronic acid is considered very well tolerated because it is produced and used in our body. Thus, we are not adding anything new to our body. Side effects almost never occurred. (9, 14, 16)

What is the alternative to hyaluronic acid capsules?

Hyaluronic acid capsules are a suitable long-term solution.

However, especially in certain areas of application such as in dermatology with regard to burns, wound healing or in cosmetics with regard to wrinkle reduction or in orthopaedics with severe joint pain, quick treatment options are often required.

The following table is intended to provide an overview of the alternative treatment options:

Alternative Field of application Scientific situation
Cream/gel Cosmetics and dermatology For burns, wound healing or facial treatments, creams, ointments and gels work more effectively. (3, 10, 11)
Syringes Cosmetics, Dermatology, Orthopaedics In cosmetics, syringes are used to achieve wrinkle reduction. (4, 5) Dermatologically, syringes are extremely effective in treating acne scars or acne itself. (7, 8) In orthopaedics, syringes are used for severe joint pain, osteoarthritis or arthritis. (15, 18)
drops Ophthalmology Eye drops are much more effective for acute dryness or tired eyes than capsules. (13, 14)

Decision: What types of hyaluronic acid capsules are there and which one is right for me?

There are many different types of hyaluronic acid. They differ in dosage, ingredients or additives and the dosage form.

Basically, hyaluronic acid capsules can be divided into three categories. These three categories will help you decide:

  • Hyaluronic acid capsules: Can absorb high doses and have a wide range of effects. Due to their ability to bind water, there are many areas of application. Additional vitamins and minerals are available.
  • Hyaluronic acid collagen: Have an additional function, because collagen is a protein. Therefore, hyaluronic acid collagen works particularly well in skin, tendons and ligaments. Have few differences to the capsules.
  • Hyaluronic acid drinking ampoules: Perfect alternative to capsules. They have the same effect as they pass through the digestive tract. They are available in two different versions: Hyaluronic acid with or without collagen.

In the following section, we would like to make it easier for you to decide which category is best for you. For this purpose, we will describe the characteristics and advantages and disadvantages of the three categories. This will help you find the best way for you to take the product.

What are the characteristics of hyaluronic acid capsules and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Hyaluronic acid capsules are one of the most popular forms of administration and types of use against age-related complaints.

The substance hyaluronic acid can be used in different ways. We carry it in us: in the connective tissue of the skin, in our eyes and joints. Hyaluronic acid is an important component. It serves, for example, as a cushioning or lubricant, as a pain reliever, ageing stopper and much more.

Hyaluronic acid capsules are so popular because they can be used in so many ways. Since they can bind moisture, they are mainly used in cosmetics for a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. Small wrinkles are thus effortlessly and quickly disappeared.

That's why you'll find it in orthopaedics, dermatology and in treatments involving mucous membranes. In orthopaedics, hyaluronic acid capsules work against joint pain, in dermatology they slow down the ageing process or help you to have more beautiful skin. They are also effective against heartburn and reflux.

Hyaluronic acid capsules can contain high doses that are distributed throughout the body due to the way they are administered. By storing it, the body can use it where it is needed. In addition, hyaluronic acid capsules are available in different variants with natural additives such as vitamin B2, selenium, zinc and more.

Advantages
  • Can absorb high doses
  • Available with selectable additives
Disadvantages
  • Effective only with long-term regular use

There are very few disadvantages, as hyaluronic acid capsules are generally very well tolerated and have no side effects.

What distinguishes hyaluronic acid collagen and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Hyaluronic acid capsules and collagen do not differ in the form of administration, as they are both taken in capsules, but in the effectiveness and the ingredients.

Hyaluronic acid collagen works in a similar way to capsules. Collagen, however, has an additional effect. They not only bind moisture, but are a structural protein of the skin. Two substances in one capsule.

Collagen is a protein in the skin and is also found in bones, cartilage, tendons and connective tissue. Our skin consists of 75 % collagen. The entire body, however, is only 25 %. So collagen works best in the skin.

Hyaluronic acid collagens have a thick and strong consistency. They stabilise ligaments and tendons, and improve the elasticity of the skin, thus reducing wrinkles. Again, you can choose different additives like biotin, vitamin C, zinc and more.

As hyaluronic acid capsules and collagen only differ in a few things, the advantages and disadvantages as well as the special features are similar.

Advantages
  • Can absorb high doses
  • Available with selectable additives
  • Have an additional function
Disadvantages
  • Effective only with long-term regular use
  • Greater risk of side effects

Side effects can lead to increased calcium levels, which can then manifest as fatigue or even nausea. Be sure to contact a doctor before taking it!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of hyaluronic acid drinking ampoules?

Hyaluronic acid ampoules are the perfect alternative to capsules if you find it difficult to take them.

The effect is the same. You can choose between hyaluronic acid as the only active ingredient or with the additive collagen. You can also choose between various additional vitamins or minerals. But there is less choice here.

Apart from that, the three different categories only differ in small ways. Basically, it depends on your taste and your area of use which category you choose.

Advantages
  • Available in high doses
  • Available with selectable additives
  • Available in two different variants
Disadvantages
  • Effective only with long-term regular use
  • Greater risk of side effects if you choose to drink collagen vials
  • More expensive than capsules

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate hyaluronic acid capsules

We will then show you which aspects you can and should look out for when buying hyaluronic acid capsules. So that you can find the best hyaluronic acid capsules for you.

The criteria that will help you make the right decision are summarised below:

In the following paragraphs, we explain what to look for in each criterion.

Dosage

The dosage is a very important purchase criterion for hyaluronic acid capsules. It depends on your area of application which dosage is most suitable for you.

High-dose hyaluronic acid capsules of 400 to 500 mg are suitable for short-term use. For example, for joint pain or general joint disease. Low-dose hyaluronic acid capsules of 150 to 350 mg are good for long-term use. For example, as a remedy against skin ageing or for a beautiful complexion.

Hyaluronsäure Kapseln-4

Most hyaluronic acid capsules are very highly dosed. This means that the maximum daily dose is usually already reached. Capsules that can be dosed more flexibly are recommended. The dosage should be chosen according to the therapy goal, area of application and body weight.

The mg specifications always refer to the dosage of hyaluronic acid per capsule. A high single dose of 400 to 500 mg therefore also has as many mg of hyaluronic acid in one capsule.

Ingredients

Most hyaluronic acid capsules are available in combinations with many vitamins and minerals.

Before you buy hyaluronic acid capsules, you should check for additives such as vitamin C, zinc, biotin and more. If you have a regular B12 deficiency, we recommend taking hyaluronic acid capsules with B12. This way you give your body exactly the substances it needs. For weak joints or joint pain, supplements like selenium or biotin are recommended.

In addition, you should consider before buying whether you want to use pure hyaluronic acid capsules or hyaluronic acid collagen capsules. Collagen works mainly in the skin, joints, ligaments and tendons. It is therefore advisable to use hyaluronic acid collagen for joint disorders. However, be sure to discuss the side effects of collagen with a doctor before taking it!

If you are a vegan or value vegan products, hyaluronic acid capsules are usually vegan. However, look for the vegan seal before buying!

Molecule size

The molecule size is very decisive for the type of effect of the hyaluronic acid capsules.

Roughly speaking, they can be divided into two different molecular sizes:

Molecular type Molecular mass Explanation
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid 1500 kD or kDa and larger Has a fast, short-term, anti-inflammatory effect. A moisturising film is formed on the skin as high-molecular hyaluronic acid adheres to the skin surface.
Low-molecular hyaluronic acid 50 kD or kDa and smaller has a long-term effect and is deposited in the connective tissue of the skin. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deep into the skin.

The higher the molecular size, the more the hyaluronic acid acts on the skin surface. The smaller, the deeper the hyaluronic acid penetrates into the skin tissue and the more effective it is.

Most hyaluronic acid capsules are between the two molecule sizes. 500 to 700 kD or kDa. This size is the golden mean. Hyaluronic acid not only works on the surface of the skin, but also treats deeper connective tissue.

Dosage form

When it comes to the dosage form, it all depends on your preference.

If capsules are difficult to swallow over a long period of time, we recommend drinking ampoules. These are a little more expensive than capsules, but achieve the same desired effect.

Hyaluronic acid in capsules is cheaper because one pack usually lasts for 3 months. Drinking ampoules are only available in monthly packs, i.e. only for 30 days. So if you don't mind swallowing capsules, you should use these.

Facts worth knowing about hyaluronic acid capsules

After the detailed information about the effect and use of hyaluronic acid, we now want to give you some additional knowledge about taking hyaluronic acid capsules.

How, when and for how long are hyaluronic acid capsules taken?

This varies depending on the therapy goal and the desired effect.

A hyaluronic acid capsule enters the digestive tract through swallowing, where it is then distributed throughout the body. There is no such thing as an overdose. Since hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is stored, the body can fall back on it at any time.

However, before you decide to take hyaluronic acid capsules, talk to a doctor. He or she will give you information about the dosage based on your body weight and the desired effect.

Can hyaluronic acid capsules expire?

Every dietary supplement has an expiry date. Just because something has expired doesn't mean it's bad.

This is a best before date. It depends on the external conditions whether a food supplement can still be used.

If you have not opened your hyaluronic acid capsules and you have stored them properly, in a dark and cool place, then you can use them without risk for up to about a year after the expiry date. Food supplements only lose their effect one year after expiry.

If you are not sure whether you should use them, we reassure you. It is not dangerous. In the worst case, the hyaluronic acid capsules are ineffective.
