The Best Ice Crusher in the United Kingdom: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an ice crusher

What are the advantages of buying an ice crusher compared to already crushed ice from the retail or wholesale trade?

You don't necessarily have to crush ice yourself, you can buy it already in this form. However, an ice crusher has several advantages, especially when it comes to your flexibility and precise quantity preparation. Crushed ice can be bought in beverage stores, at petrol stations and in various supermarkets. The quantity to be sold is usually very large. Basically, you can hardly find crushed ice below 2 kg.

In supermarkets, you can buy crushed ice from 3 euros/kg, but in retail stores the price can double or even triple. If you make the ice cream hanging at home, you can estimate the exact amount you want and don't have to worry about storing ice cream. Conclusion: If you are having a big party, you should probably go for ice cream that has already been crushed, otherwise an ice cream crusher is recommended.

Würfel Eis

Especially in the height of summer, ice cream is a real treat. With an ice crusher, you can always replenish your supply. Ice cubes are not ideal for cooling in the long term, because the surface pressure does not allow it. Crushed ice, on the other hand, melts faster and gives off its temperature to, for example, a drink. (Photo: MasterTux / pixabay.com)

How much does an ice crusher cost?

Ice crushers can be found in all price ranges - for private use they are available for a few euros. Professional devices, which are mainly used in the gastronomy sector, can be in the four-digit range.

Product Price
Crushed ice maker From 10 euros
Ice crusher From 20 euros
Side by side refrigerator 300 - 1500 euros

Manual ice crushers and the crushed ice maker are available for as little as 10 euros. If you want to enjoy a drink or two with crushed ice, these devices are ideal for you. Electrically operated devices are somewhat higher in their price range. For good ice crushers, you should expect a price starting at 20 euros. Side-by-side refrigerators are a bit more expensive. The price starts at 600 euros.

Plastic or stainless steel - What material should you look for when buying an ice crusher?

Basically, ice crushers are available in plastic and stainless steel. According to our research, however, you should prefer devices made of stainless steel. On the one hand because of their robustness and on the other hand because of their stability and durability.

Not every stainless steel device is good, however, and you should also make sure that stainless metal is used for the roller. There is nothing more annoying than having invested money in an appliance if it gets rusty after a few uses. The cleaning of both materials can be done on both sides.

How does a manual and an electric ice crusher work?

The preparation of crushed ice is very easy. You fill your ice cubes into the container provided. The second step depends on the appliance you use.

Did you know that electric ice crushers tend to be more generous in size and capacity than manual ice crushers? So they are often more suitable for large parties.

With manual devices, you have to use your muscle power and by turning a crank, the roller then does the work. Electrically operated devices crush the ice at the touch of a button. The end product then ends up either directly in your drink or in a designated container. To get the ice out, it is best to use a plastic scoop. This is usually included in the scope of delivery.

How much ice can be made with the ice crusher?

Hobby appliances can process just under one litre of ice. Larger devices, on the other hand, can process much larger quantities. Depending on your needs, you should buy the right model. Because not everyone needs the same amount of ice, different devices are of course manufactured.

A person who does not often use crushed ice or does so only in very rare quantities can certainly go for the hobby appliance - this is even recommended, as these are in a two-digit price range. However, if your ice crusher is in constant use, the purchase of a professional device is of course suitable. These are usually a little more expensive, but on the other hand they are also more stable.

Decision: What types of ice crushers are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between two different types of ice crushers:

  • Electric ice crusher
  • Manual ice crusher

An ice crusher provides you with fresh, non-stick crushed ice, which you can use to give your cocktails the necessary icing on the cake in terms of taste. Whether for a cosy evening with friends or just for yourself: The Ice Crusher provides cooling for various drinks. Crushed ice is often used for cocktails or to cool champagne bottles, whereas ice cubes are mainly used to cool non-alcoholic drinks.

Crushed ice has a certain advantage over ice cubes because the surface of the crushed ice is larger. The number of many small ice cube pieces ensures faster diffusion between the crushed ice cube pieces and the drink. This means that the drink can be cooled more effectively in the shortest time. An ice crusher should have some kind of fastening on the underside, as otherwise it can happen during ice crushing that the device does not stay in place but slips.

With electric devices, such a fastening can usually be found on every model, but with manually operated crushers, it is important to ensure that there are rubber feet or a silicone ring on the underside. This is the only way to ensure that the appliance does not slip and possibly even fall down during ice crushing.

There are different ice crushers in different price ranges. All ice crushers contain a grinder that crushes ice cubes. How fast the crusher crushes the ice depends on the wattage. The higher the wattage, the faster the ice cubes are crushed. When buying, it is also important to consider the filling quantity - depending on whether the crushed ice cubes are to be used for a party or for personal use.

Depending on what you want to use the crusher for, a manual or electric ice crusher is best for you. In the following sections, we would like to introduce you to these two different types.

Product Function
Crushed Ice Maker Device that automatically crushes ice cubes at the touch of a button.
Ice crusher device with which you can crush ice cubes manually by hand.
Ice crusher appliance with which you can crush ice cubes manually by hand.
Side by side refrigerator The ice crusher is at a convenient height and works automatically or at the touch of a button when you put a glass down.

We will also briefly explain the differences between each type to help you find out which crusher is right for you. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are clearly presented for comparison.

How does an electric ice crusher work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The electric ice crusher has the advantage that the device does almost everything by itself and precisely reduces the size of the ice cubes. The filling quantity is also important - depending on whether the crushed ice is to be used for a larger party or just for personal use. There are also stand mixers that can be used as ice crushers.

However, this use should be indicated on the product, otherwise the blender may be damaged. Electric ice crushers are particularly useful when there is a large demand for crushed ice. The way electric ice crushers work is also simple: Electric ice crushers are simply connected to the mains and are ready for use immediately. The automatic crushing process begins when the switch is turned on.

Advantages
  • Larger capacity
  • Not very time-consuming
  • Energy-saving
Disadvantages
  • Not possible without electricity
  • More expensive to buy

How does a manual ice crusher work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Manual ice crushers are often the cheaper models to buy. Manual ice crushers are equipped with a hand crank and are very easy to operate: Simply fill the device with ice cubes and turn the hand crank. How fast the ice cubes are crushed depends entirely on your own turning speed. In addition, the manual ice crusher also has a number of advantages to offer, as it can be used flexibly thanks to its hand-operated mode of operation. Besides, they can also be used without electricity. They are usually equipped with a removable collection container.

It is important to look at the volume of this container, as a different capacity is required depending on the type of use. If you need the ice crusher for an evening with several people, you should choose an ice crusher with a larger capacity.

Advantages
  • Flexible to use
  • Noise level controllable
  • Can be used without electricity
  • Energy-saving
Disadvantages
  • Time-consuming
  • Unsuitable for large quantities

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate ice crushers

Whether for delicious cocktails, desserts or smoothies, crushed ice is the ideal ingredient. Especially on hot days, crushed ice is almost a must for the home bar or kitchen. Crushedice literally means ice that has been broken up or crushed. With the help of an ice crusher, the chunky pieces of ice are broken down into smaller pieces.

Product type Price Manual load Power supply Noise level
Manual ice crusher Low High Not necessary Medium
Electric ice crusher Low/Medium Low/Medium Necessary Medium
Stand or. Stable with ice crush function Low/Medium Low/Medium Necessary High
Side-by-Side Refrigerator High Low Necessary Medium
Freezer with ice crusher Medium/High Low Necessary Low

Crushed ice enjoys its great popularity because of the larger cooling surface. This means that your food and drinks reach the desired temperature more quickly. In addition, crushed ice has the advantage that the dilution of the prepared food and drinks is not as high as with conventional ice cubes. The handy little helper that helps to crush chunky ice cubes is called an ice crusher. With the help of a grinder, it crushes the ice in no time at all. There are five different types of ice crusher:

  • Manual ice crusher
  • Electric ice crusher
  • Stand mixer or hand blender with ice crush function
  • Side-by-side refrigerator
  • Freezer with ice crusher

How do manual ice-crushers work and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

If you do not need crushed ice very often and are not afraid of physical work, this is the right model for you. With these models, the ice is crushed evenly. At the same time, the end product comes out in slightly coarser pieces. This is because a roller is built in for cutting. The manual ice crusher is very easy to use: You fill the ice cubes into a funnel and then start turning the crank. This puts your muscle power to the test. Because there is no need to use electricity, these devices are particularly environmentally friendly and can also be used flexibly and anywhere.

Advantages
  • Usually cheaper than other models
  • Can be used anywhere
  • Easy to operate
Disadvantages
  • Physical work
  • Poor workmanship can quickly lead to breakage
  • Limited processing quantity

If you want to serve a lot of guests with crushed ice, this model is not particularly suitable. The amount of ice to be processed is usually limited to one to two litres. When buying such a device, you should pay attention to the workmanship of the outer material and the blades, as well as the length of the hand crank. The longer the crank handle, the less force you have to use when grinding. This also applies to the sharpness of the blades: because you won't get too far with a blunt roller.

How do electric ice crushers work and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Perfectly ground ice at the touch of a button? Yes, it is possible and the electric model makes it possible. Unlike the manual model, you don't need to use your muscle power to crush. Operation is just as easy: connect the machine to the power supply, fill in the ice cubes and press the start button. Electric ice crushers can usually crush more ice faster.

This is why bars and restaurants (although in larger formats) use such models. But they are also suitable for hobby use. Especially if you have to do some errands before your garden/house party, or your cocktail, the electric version offers a big advantage. Once you start it, it doesn't need you anymore. So you can relax and make your final preparations.

Advantages
  • Very easy to use
  • No physical effort
  • Larger amounts of ice can be crushed more quickly
Disadvantages
  • Location-bound, without electricity the device does not work
  • Irregular pieces of ice melt faster
  • Higher noise level compared to manual ice crushers

The only disadvantage that comes up is that it is location-bound. In order to use the ice crusher, it must be connected to the power supply. Therefore, before buying, think about the environment in which you want to use it.

How can I use a hand blender or stand mixer as an ice crusher and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Don't buy your own ice crusher and still enjoy cool drinks. Is that even possible? Of course it is! The alternative would be a blender. But beware, you can't use any conventional blender to grind ice. Ice is the hardest form of water and can carry a person from a diameter of 3 cm. For this reason, the material from which the blades used to cut the ice are made must be particularly robust.

However, having a robust blade is not enough. You should therefore pay attention to three things when using blenders: The number of watts, the number of revolutions and the pulse function. The wattage, in short, describes the power of your blender. From 600 watts upwards, the appliance can be used to break ice. However, the motto for the ice cube quantity is: "Less is more! I.e. a maximum of 3-5 ice cubes should be crushed at once.

However, it is not only the power of your blender that is decisive, but also the number of revolutions. The ice cubes should not rotate comfortably as if on a merry-go-round, but should actually be crushed. The guide value for the number of revolutions is around 10,000. Last but not least, you should pay attention to a pulse function. This is used to vary the routing speed of the blades. This in turn ensures even pieces of ice. Many blenders are already equipped with an ice crush function.

Advantages
  • Easy to use
  • No additional kitchen appliance
Disadvantages
  • Many features to look out for
  • Not every conventional blender is suitable

The advantage is that you can use the blender not only for curling, but also for many other things.

How do crushed ice makers work and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

No tedious physical effort and no noise. The crushed ice maker is definitely the easiest way to crush ice. All the appliances mentioned above have two disadvantages in common. On the one hand, they take up quite a bit of storage space. On the other hand, they are quite noisy when operated, regardless of whether they are manual or electric.

The crushed ice maker does not have these.

Did you know that the noise level is also an essential purchase criterion for ice crushers? Ice cubes are made of frozen water, so crushing can make a lot of noise. However, it is still more bearable than crushing with a rolling pin. Manual crushers are more practical, as they are much quieter when crushing.

In the end, the preparation works the same way as with ice cubes. You pour water into the container provided, insert the enclosed dividers in front of it and put it in the freezer. After a few hours, the water is frozen and voilà you have crushed ice.

One disadvantage of the whole thing is that the preparation process takes a relatively long time (just until the ice freezes) and the amount of crushed ice is manageable. Usually there is only enough for two cocktails. Our research has also shown that the plastic container breaks pretty quickly.

Advantages
  • Easy to use
  • Little storage space
  • Dishwasher-safe
Disadvantages
  • Long preparation time
  • Foil and dividers have to be bought regularly
  • Only small quantities can be made

How do side-by-side refrigerators work and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

These multifunctional appliances offer you a great advantage. On the one hand a conventional refrigerator, on the other you can prepare ice cubes and crushed ice in no time. The preparation works at the touch of a button and in seconds.

The built-in refrigerator turns water into ice first and crushes it if you wish. The only thing you need is water to make the ice in the first place. With the refrigerator, you can choose between a fixed water connection and a tank. The former offers you the advantage that you are not limited in the amount you can produce. With both options, however, you have to consider the intensive cleaning.

The water can quickly taste stale and become unhygienic. The side-by-side refrigerator is a true multifunctional appliance that doesn't create any work for you when it comes to preparing ice. The price is also correspondingly high. In addition to the fridge, you have the option of buying a pure freezer with included ice cube maker. The functionality is exactly the same as described above.

Advantages
  • Multifunctional appliance
  • Easy to use
Disadvantages
  • High purchase and maintenance costs
  • Regular cleaning necessary

Facts worth knowing about ice crushers

What can I use crushed ice for?

The most common answer to this question will of course be cocktails. But you can also make various desserts or smoothies with it. The Caipirinha - The national drink from Brazil The preparation is very simple. You need four ingredients:

  • The alcohol: Cachaca - this is a spirit obtained from sugar cane
  • Cane sugar - gives the caramel-like taste
  • Lime - adds a little spice to the drink
  • Crushed ice

First of all, prepare the base, which consists of the cane sugar and the lime; optionally, mineral water can be added to dilute it. To do this, squeeze the three pieces of lime into the glass with a pestle. In the second step, the glass is filled with ice and topped up with cachaca.

Especially in the height of summer, alcoholic drinks are perhaps not always the right approach. For example, you can also prepare some desserts

with crushed ice. The basic recipe is very simple: puree the desired ingredient (e.g. strawberries, watermelon, etc.), preferably together with some icing sugar, and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Then pass the ice cream through the crusher and serve with cream and fresh fruit.

What are the options for storing crushed ice?

You've made too much crushed ice once - no problem, it's not very difficult to store. One advantage of crushed ice is that it cannot go bad - only it can melt. For this reason, you need a suitable storage facility with the right temperature.

The temperature should be at least below 0 degrees. For storage in the freezer, there are special containers that have been designed for the temperatures. However, make sure that you do not let the ice cream melt, but put it directly into the fridge. As soon as the consistency is somewhat loosened, breaking it apart (after refreezing) becomes quite a tedious task.
