Whenever we are looking for cookware to buy, we always wonder which is the best type, right? After all, there are so many different models of cookware that we get super confused.

Sometimes we end up going straight to the iron pans, and this is one of the biggest mistakes we can make. Despite being the heaviest, these are the most recommended pans for healthy eating.

Besides being super durable and the best at distributing heat evenly, these pans have a unique and very important feature: they help fight anaemia!

A study by the University of Campinas (Unicamp) has proved that iron pans are beneficial to health, since they release iron during cooking, which further increases the nutritional value of your recipe.

Another advantage, is that cast iron pans dispense the excessive use of oil, and have natural non-stick properties. They are, even, great for sealing food.

Iron or non-stick pan: which one to choose?

It is inevitable that we worry about practical issues when choosing domestic utensils. Nobody likes having to waste time trying to get grease off the bottom of a pan, right?

And then, when buying, we are always in doubt: will an iron pan allow me to reduce the use of oil without the food sticking? Or is it better to buy a non-stick pan?

Well, the truth is that these models are very different. The advantage of a non-stick pan is that it is self-sufficient. It does not require the use of oil at all, and is easy to clean.

However, it is still controversial. In its composition are two chemical compounds: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

These acids, when induced to high temperatures, may release toxic substances that increase the risk of diseases, such as cancer. It is therefore important that you pay very close attention to the composition of these pans.

Iron pans do not totally dispense the use of oil, but you should use very little when preparing a recipe in it. They have natural non-stick factors, so you don't need to worry about large amounts of fat.

Both models have their advantages, but we should consider health issues when choosing a non-stick pan, because it can be a risky option, okay?

How much does it cost?

The cost of a cast iron pan varies greatly, and there is room for all kinds of "pockets" on the market.

The more classic pans, in the more conventional model, are usually not that expensive. One unit costs between 10 GBP and 30 GBP, depending on the size of each one.

But, if you want a professional, modern and fancy design pan, you should prepare yourself for the high prices. On average, they cost 100 GBP, but some can reach 200 GBP.

Internal and external enamel

Some people dismiss the enamel, but the truth is that it makes your pan not only much prettier, but it also contributes to prevent food from sticking to the bottom. The enameled pans tend to be the most modern, and therefore are the best to cook without running the risk of burning your recipe.

The enamel also gives a smoother and more beautiful look to the pan, and it can be matte or shiny, and even colored. It is important to say that it is not essential, and that it is a matter of taste and value that you can invest (enameled pans are more expensive).

Size and weight

There are numerous sizes of pans out there, and in the case of cast iron pans, the bigger they are, the heavier they are.

It is important that you observe what your family needs in terms of size, and take into account that the largest pans are so heavy that you can not lift them with just one hand.

If you cook for a small group, for example, there is no need to buy a model that is too big, even to facilitate the storage in your kitchen and not to run the risk of hurting yourself when you drop it on the floor.
