We know that the kitchen is the ideal place for many, and if that is your case, you should know that there are elements that you need to have to facilitate the creation of your culinary works, so that it does not become tedious to stay in the work area. A vital element to achieve this is the cooker hood.

Smoke and steam cannot be avoided in the kitchen, even the latter brings with it a number of pleasant smells that make this discipline an art. However, this can be counterproductive when cooking, because if the area is full of smoke, you will not be able to work properly. The task of the cooker hood is to prevent this.

You may find it difficult to buy a cooker hood when you are buying one, as you don't really know what to look out for in order to make the right choice. Therefore, in this article we will teach you everything you need to know about them in order to choose the ideal one for your kitchen.

  • A cooker hood is an essential tool in the kitchen area, as it allows the extraction of odours and smoke while cooking, so that constant work is made easier. It is important to use it if you cook frequently, to avoid discomfort.
  • There are various types of hoods on the market, but the two main ones to look at are usually air extraction hoods and carbon filter hoods. Although with the former there are pipes that clash aesthetically, the extraction is complete, while the latter purifies the air, which means that the extraction range is somewhat limited.
  • When you are about to make your decision, there are certain factors that you should take into account when making comparisons between different models. Criteria such as coverage capacity, design, cleanliness or type of hood are among the most relevant.

Buying guide: What you need to know about cooker hoods

What are cooker hoods and what are their advantages?

A cooker hood is a necessary tool for proper work in the kitchen, whether at home or in a restaurant, as it allows the extraction of fumes and odours, preventing them from condensing and making work more difficult. They are essential when cooking frequently, especially if the dishes are cooked at the same time.

One of the most important benefits of cooker hoods is that they allow smoke extraction, preventing choking. If the smoke condenses too much, it can damage the health of the cooker.

A product may sound perfect, but the truth is that, like any other product on the market, it has advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account when buying, so that you can be completely sure about what you are buying.

  • They extract smoke while cooking, preventing it from condensing
  • They light up the work area
  • They minimise odours
  • They can be expensive
  • They tend to make noise when extracting.

Extractor hoods or carbon filter hoods - what should you look out for?

There are two types of cooker hoods that you should be aware of, as both have advantages and disadvantages that you should evaluate in order to choose the right one according to your needs, taste and available space in the kitchen.

Air extraction hoods: These are the most common models on the market, as they are dedicated, as their name suggests, to extracting the air and smoke that is released while cooking, and then, through a system of pipes, to releasing it to the outside.

With this type of hoods you are sure to have pure air, as the contaminated air is completely removed from the place. They are very durable, however, they require the installation of pipes, which can break with the aesthetics of the kitchen, especially if it is minimalist.

Carbon filter hoods: This type of cooker hoods do not require piping, which is one of their main attractions, as it makes their installation in the area simpler, without the need for major building work. With this model, the air passes through its filters, so that it comes out purified.

With these hoods the air is "recycled". However, the constant use and the lack of piping means that the filters have to be changed periodically, generating an additional expense after purchasing it. In addition, it does not have such a high extraction capacity as the previous ones.

Air extraction hoods Carbon filter hoods
Installation Complex, piping system is installed Simple
Extraction capacity High and immediate Medium, the air must pass through the filters
Aesthetic Industrial Minimalist
Maintenance Does not need frequent Periodically

Where to buy a cooker hood?

One place where you can safely buy your cooker hood is Wal-mart, as it has a section in the home, where you can buy the model of your choice and of excellent quality, with the possibility of seeing a variety of prices.

Online shopping can also be an option, and the "Elektra" website is excellent for this. Their hoods section has an incredible variety of prices and models, so you can order the one you want and receive it at home.

Another good alternative for online shopping is Amazon Mexico and Mercado Libre Mexico, where you can see the seller's reputation, the product rating and the public's opinion, which will give you more confidence at the time of purchase.

Buying criteria

Finally, there are some factors that you should take into consideration when making your final decision, as they will allow you to make comparisons between models, so that you can choose the cooker hood that is right for you.

  • Coverage capacity
  • Hood type
  • Design
  • Cleanliness

Coverage capacity

The amount of space that the cooker hood can cover over the cookers is paramount, as it will ensure extraction in all parts of the kitchen. Remember that, although not all of them are always used, you should buy the cooker hood with the expectation that they will be, so that it can extract the smoke and steam completely.

90 CM: Among the widest models are those of 90 centimetres. This coverage capacity is very large for a cooker hood, and allows for powerful extraction in very large kitchens with many burners.

80 CM: This size is still large, but not too large, so it can be considered as "medium". It allows extraction on standard cookers, commonly 6 burners. They are perfect for homes where the kitchen has good space.

70 CM: These models are somewhat compact compared to the others. From this point to slightly smaller sizes they are considered small hoods. This does not mean that they have a low capacity, but that they cover less space. They are ideal for homes with little space and 4-burner cookers.

Type of hood

There is a wide variety of hood types, and while we usually think of air extraction hoods or carbon filter hoods, there are others that you can find on the market, which may be more suited to your primary need.

Built-in hoods: These are a model of hood that fits in with the main decoration and design of the kitchen. Normally they are completely integrated without breaking any decorative pattern, to the point that they are not noticeable to the naked eye. Excellent for minimalist styles.

Island hoods: This type of hoods are installed directly from the ceiling downwards, looking as if they are hanging over the island. They are positioned exactly where the cooker hobs are installed. They are usually very well seen, although this will depend on the space, as they can make a space look smaller.

Telescopic hoods: These are installed directly on the worktop, just above the cooker. When activated, it comes out and extracts the smoke, and then goes back into storage. You must take into account that to install it, you need to occupy space that you would use for storage, as its mechanism is located inside the worktop.

In terms of design there are two ways of looking at cooker hoods, and according to what you need and are looking for, you can choose the one you prefer from them. Both are functional, so it depends on your requirements and taste.

Industrial design: In this case, the hood does not try to look nice and modern, but it is very powerful. They are usually very large and with high capacities. Perfect for restaurants where you cook all day long. They are not decorative, but they are powerful.

Modern design: Modern hoods are the best option for the home. Their size varies according to the capacity you need, but they are normally designed for the home, i.e. kitchens with up to 12 burners maximum. They fit the aesthetics according to their model, and are decorative.

All cooker hoods can be cleaned, but some are more tedious to clean than others. There are models where the grease trap filter is easily removable, and can be placed in the dishwasher.

There are other more manual models, where the parts must be cleaned by hand to avoid damaging them, as placing them in the dishwasher can damage the filter, or else they simply do not fit in the dishwasher.

If you take good care of the toilet while cooking, there will be no need for arduous cleaning. However, if you use them very frequently, perhaps a hood that facilitates cleaning is the best option, thereby saving time and energy.
