The Best Lactobacillus Reuteri: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for Lactobacillus Reuteri

When buying Lactobacillus Reuteri, you can pay attention to various aspects.

If you make the right choice for you, you can save money and at the same time ensure that you are not doing anything to your body that it does not need. Therefore, always look for high quality and ask for certificates from the manufacturers if necessary.

Composition

It is very important to remember that Lactibacillus reuteri is never found alone in a product. In most cases, it is a mixture with various bacteria.

Vitamins and minerals are combined in probiotics. These ingredients are included in this list.

Effects of these ingredients:

  • Vitamins: Metabolic processes and cell protection are supported with vitamins
  • Folic acid: Folic acid plays a major role by taking over the metabolism of various amino acids and also supports cell division.
  • VitaminB2: Vitamin B2 is mainly known for its anti-inflammatory effect, and people also know it by the name riboflavin.
  • Calcium: This ingredient contains vitamin C, which improves the absorption of minerals into the body and is especially known for its effect on bones.

You will need to choose the one that best suits your needs, but look through these ingredients if you want to focus on another effect as well besides Lactibacillus reuteri.

Value

You need to be very careful when buying probiotics or medicines. Look carefully at the packaging and read all available information about the product.

If a manufacturer does not give enough information about a product, this could be a sign of poor quality.

If the manufacturer does not give enough information, this could lead to some suspicion on your part and indicate an inferior product.

There is some information on the packaging that should always appear:

  • Country of production
  • Percentage of Lactobacillus Reuteri
  • Dosage instructions
  • Number of colony forming units
  • possible additives
  • Instructions for regular laboratory tests

As it is not a real medicine, the same rules do not apply to food supplements. Therefore, you should always be careful when buying your food supplement and pay close attention to the above information.

Package size

When you buy a food supplement, you should always think about how long you want to take the medicine. This is because if you are treating acute gingivitis, it is not advisable to buy the bulk pack. If you are taking the medicine for the first time, try a smaller pack first.

Before buying this product, always keep in mind what you are buying it for.

The large pack has its advantages, of course, e.g. it is cheaper, but you should always remember the best-before date. In this case, you should never exceed the recommended best-before date, as these capsules contain live bacteria.

Sometimes these packages should be stored in the refrigerator. Always remember how much you would consume of this product.

Dosage form

Lactobacillus Reuteri is available in all shapes and sizes. However, you should know which type of dosage you prefer. There are people who cannot swallow tablets or capsules, in which case you have several options to choose from.

But the largest selection of Lactobacillus Reuteri products comes in capsule and tablet form. You can choose between different products with different ingredients. But if you are someone who has problems swallowing pills, then there are also drops and lozenges in the form of lozenges.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about Lactobacillus Reuteri answered in detail

In order to provide you with comprehensive information about the effectiveness of Lactobacillus Reuteri and to give you an understanding of the current state of science, we have summarised all the important information in the following sections.

What is Lactobacillus Reuteri and how does it work?

Lactobacillus Reuteri was first isolated in 1962 and subordinated to the strain Lactobacillus Fermentum.

Lactobacillus Reuteri plays an important role in fighting off infections and supporting your immune system.

Lactobacillus Reuteri is a rod-shaped lactic acid bacterium that is also used in factory farming. It can be used instead of antibiotics to prevent salmonella. Nowadays it is becoming increasingly important to choose probiotics instead of antibiotics.

In human medicine it is mostly used against diarrhoea or gingivitis (1, 2).

Lactobacillus Reuteri is not only involved in the production of many vitamin B complexes, but also occurs naturally in human breast milk. It supports a healthy immune system and fights infections. Studies have shown that daily intake of Lactobacillus Reuteri reduces the risk of getting sick (3, 4).

Illnesses Lactobacillus Reuteri Effect
Diarrhoeal Illness Diarrhoeal illnesses are massively among the children's illnesses, the treatment time can be shortened if the child gets the probiotic with Lactobacillus Reuteri.
Intestinal infection Diarrhoea can be caused by intestinal infection, but with the help of Lactobacillus Reuteri, the days of the disease can be shortened as the bacterium has positive effects on the digestive and immune system.
gingivitis Lactobacillus Reuteri can significantly reduce gingivitis and also helps prevent periodontitis.

There is also no harm in taking the product for a longer period of time and these above mentioned diseases can be prevented if Lactobacillus Reuteri is used in any form. This is also the reason why breast milk is so important for babies.

When and for whom is it useful to take Lactobacillus Reuteri?

Anyone can take Lactobacillus Reuteri, especially people with diarrhoea problems.

Lactobacillus Reuteri is very important for young children to strengthen their immune system and regulate their digestion. As mentioned earlier, Lactobacillus Reuteri is found in breast milk, so babies can absorb this probiotic from their mothers. But not all mothers have this probiotic, as today's lifestyle avoids fermented foods.

All in all, the probiotic should be taken by people with gingivitis, but especially by people with digestive problems and a weakened immune system.

What types of Lactobacillus Reuteri are there and which one is right for you?

There are three types of Lactobacillus Reuterie you can choose from. There are capsules, tablets and drops.

Type Description
Capsules The dosage is not a problem, but it can be a problem for some people who have difficulty swallowing capsules.
drops The dosage can be a problem, and it is also problematic for travel, but it may not be a problem to swallow.
Tablets The dosage may not cause any problems, and there should be no problem swallowing them, as these tablets are designed for children.

This table shows the main differences from your point of view when choosing between the forms. Now we will explain the difference between these types in more detail.

Capsules

The capsule form is very common in food supplements. It is very unproblematic to choose the capsule forms because you don't have to worry about the dosage. However, if you don't like swallowing capsules, you should choose the drops or tablets.

Lactobacillus Reuteri

capsules are widely available on the market, but you may not find that they are right for everyone. Especially for people who have problems swallowing capsules and tablets. (Image source: Michał Parzuchowski / Unsplashed)

The coating of the capsules can only be broken down by stomach acid. These capsules contain a high dose of active ingredient. These capsules are resistant to stomach acid and do not need to be dosed, they also act directly in the intestine. The disadvantage of these capsules is that they are not always suitable for vegetarians and vegans, they are usually more expensive than the other option (drops or tablets) and they are difficult to swallow.

Drops

The other dosage form is drops. They are easy to take, and it is a big problem for people who have trouble swallowing. One of the disadvantages is that you have to dose them, and they are also not so convenient if you take them on the go. And these drops might also contain alcohol. The advantages are that they are easy to ingest and divisible.

There aren't that many options if you want to buy Lactobacillus Reuteri in drop form. If you find a drop form of Lactibacillus reuteri, always look at the additives because of the alcohol.

Tablets

The third option for the dosage form of Lactobacillus reuteri is tablets. They are easy to take and are also suitable for children. One of the main advantages is that they do not need to be dosed and they can also be divided.

The main target group for these tablets are people with gum problems whose goal is to reduce plaque. But the live bacterial strains in capsules are much higher than in tablets. This is one of the main disadvantages of Lactobacillus Reuteri tablets. Also, their effect is concentrated in the oral cavity and they are not as widely available on the market.

How should Lactobacillus Reuteri be dosed?

You should always read the recommended dosage per day specific to the product. Because there are products that say you should take one probiotic per day, but there are also products that say you should take 2 per day to get the best effect.

There are the different dosage forms that you can choose from. You must always be careful to read the label before buying the product. This label will guide you to the right dosage per day.

What are the alternatives to Lactobacillus Reuteri?

There are many alternatives to Lactobacillus Reuteri, such as other lactic acid bacteria of the same strain:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: Inflammations in the bladder and vaginal area are protected by this strain. It also supports lactose digestion and is also responsible for the production of important vitamins (5).
  • Lactobacillus bulgaricus: Lactobacillus bulgaricus balances the microbiome and also converts lactose in the body into lactic acid (6).
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus: This strain of bacteria could also be included with Lactibacillus reuteri as it has many benefits for the body. For example, the protection of lactic acid bacteria to reach the colon alive, as this strain of bacteria is resistant to stomach acid. It can also help balance the flora (7).

There are alternatives, you don't necessarily have to take probiotics to replace Lactobacillus Reuteri. You can take up your system by eating some of the following: Yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi. You should only read the label of the yoghurt and kefir. This is because the active bacteria are noted on these products, and you should choose those that contain Lactobacillus Reuteri.

Remember that these products have an expiry date, so try to eat this product as soon as possible to get the most active bacteria from the products.

What can Lactobacillus Reuteri do for oral health?

According to studies, Lactobacillus Reuteri can minimise the risk of gingivitis. One study investigated the response by taking Lactibacillus reuteri in patients with moderate chronic periodontitis. 24 patients received treatment with the probiotic tablets, and there was also a control group that did not receive the probiotic tablets.

There was a significant decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines in the 24 patients. Taking Lactobacillus Reuteri decreased inflammation in most of the patients (8, 9).

What are the side effects of Lactobacillus Reuteri?

Every product has a side effect these days, including this one. But we should point pot, there is very rare occasion when you have side effects from taking a probiotic.

Some side effects have been observed in the following underlying diseases:

  • Immunodeficiencies
  • Metabolic diseases
  • Infections
  • weakened and vulnerable people

The use of Lactobacillus Reuteri for healthy people is safe, but in people with the above diseases, the doctor should be consulted before starting the use of Lactobacillus Reuteri (10).
