It works through a photosensitive device, i.e. it works with the presence of a certain type of light that projects the printout through a small laser beam. It also has a toner, which is a powder that acts like ink in any regular printing system.

The main advantage of the laser printer is undoubtedly its speed, as it would not be possible to print the amount of paper that is used in companies if it were not for this type of printer. Another benefit, as mentioned in the first paragraph, is the print quality, which is far superior to the inkjet system.

If we are going to use it for work, there are professions such as law or engineering where coloured ink is not usually used. But in professions such as design, advertising or marketing, it will be essential to buy a printer that offers a wide range of shades.

Discarding the tools that won't be useful will help you choose the right printer, so if you don't need to print in colour you can buy the classic monochrome printer and save space and money. Otherwise it would be good to invest in a multicolour laser printer.

Print speed

Will you use the laser printer for work or home use? If you need to print documents quickly for presentation within a limited time frame, it is important to pay attention to the number of pages per minute, which is usually 20 pages per minute for standard printers and 30 pages per minute and above for full-featured printers.

Printer resolution

One of the advantages of laser printers is that they have very good resolution (except for photographs); however it is important to pay attention to this factor if you need the quality to be particularly high. If so, you should make sure that the resolution is no lower than 600 dpi.

Quality is measured in dpi, i.e. dots per inch. The higher this value, the more resolution, definition and detail the printout will have. For example, standard models print at 600 dpi (horizontal resolution) and more professional models print at over 1200 dpi.

Connections

The type of connection also depends on the use of the printer; for example, if you need to make your work easier by connecting from any device (tablet, laptop, smartphone and others), the best option is Wi-Fi, which is the most recent and flexible system available, ideal for home and office use.

You also have the classic USB port system, which virtually all printers have and is still very useful. LAN is the best option for offices, where the printer is shared with other people, because the data transmission is high and it allows you to send documents directly to an email.

There is also the Parallel Port (an interface between a computer and a peripheral), which used to be used a lot in the past and there are still printers with it, but it is now a bit outdated and has been overtaken by new connection systems, especially Wi-Fi.

Processor and memory

Processor and memory are important aspects to take into account, as lasers print page by page and first have to generate it in memory, therefore it needs more RAM than an inkjet printer that prints line by line.

Laser printer memory is measured in megabytes; the best laser printers on the market have 64 MB of memory and can be expanded to 128 MB. The larger the memory, the faster the printer can process multiple jobs.

If you are constantly printing, lasers with up to 64 MB and no less than 12 MB are fine, and if you are going to use the printer at home for your own work, 2 MB is sufficient.

Cheaper laser printers tend to have single or dual-core processors of 400 to 500 Mhz, and between 32 and 128 MB of RAM, while the more sophisticated ones double these numbers. So you will have to re-evaluate your usage and make the best purchase accordingly.
