Do you regularly need blouses for your office job or other events and are unsure how best to wash them? Because of their fine fabric, they are usually considered very delicate. You should also keep this in mind when cleaning them.

Especially for delicates, including fabrics such as velvet, lace or silk, we recommend using so-called laundry bags for cleaning. Their primary task is to protect your garment. But which is the best laundry bag and what else should you know about this topic? We would like to explain all this to you in the following.

  • Laundry bags are mainly used for cleaning delicate clothes, but also for curtains and sometimes shoes.
  • There are two different types, including the zip system and one that uses cords or ribbons for closure.
  • They make for a more environmentally friendly washing process as they trap microplastics from the clothes so they do not end up in the waste water.

The Best Laundry Bag: Our Choices

Buying and evaluation criteria for laundry bags

We have already presented a few laundry bags as examples. Basically, however, four specific buying criteria apply to all types of laundry bags.

On the one hand, you can evaluate how well a laundry bag meets your needs and, on the other hand, what quality it has in general. We have clearly presented these evaluation criteria below:

However, we will now explain what is really meant by the individual criteria.

Capacity and dimensions

The capacity and dimensions of a laundry bag are basically individual aspects. This means that we cannot generalise here about which size is best for you and your household.

For example, a family of five, three of whom wear delicates every day, will need a laundry bag with a much larger capacity than a single person who wears work clothes like overalls to work.

Among other things, laundry bags are available that are 50x60 centimetres in size, but in contrast, there are also those that are only 20x30 centimetres in size. In the course of this, the capacity of such laundry bags also differs. The smaller laundry bags are used more for bras, while the larger ones can also be used for woolen garments.

It is important to ensure that the laundry bags are large enough for the clothes they contain. The garments should not be squeezed, but should have enough space in the bags.

Laundry bags are not only available in different sizes, but also in different materials. Laundry bags made of cotton are usually very durable, which means, among other things, that they can withstand higher temperatures.

One disadvantage of cotton nets, however, is that they produce more abrasion during washing due to their coarse fibres. However, this is basically what laundry nets are supposed to prevent.

Besides cotton, there are also laundry nets made of polyester or plastic.

Polyester is usually boil-proof and can withstand even higher temperatures than cotton. Undoubtedly, all these materials have their advantages but also disadvantages, which is why you should know your individual needs here too.

Laundry bags also have a lot to offer in terms of design. However, it can be said that the practical use of laundry bags is naturally in the foreground and not the appearance.

Nevertheless, laundry bags are available in various designs, colours and even in customised designs. However, it is up to you to decide to what extent and whether such aspects are considered and accepted by you.

There are also plain white laundry bags that serve their purpose at least as well as coloured or personalised ones. By the way, you should make sure that they do not rub off on your clothes. However, this should be a basic requirement.

Last but not least: the closure of the laundry bag. There are basically two systems. The first uses a zip to close the bag. The second uses mainly ribbons, but also cords.

It can be said that the zip fastener keeps the laundry net closed better, as tapes and cords can come loose more quickly due to the mechanical movement in the washing machine. If this is the case, the laundry can escape into the laundry drum and is no longer protected.

With the zip system, you should make sure that there is a loop to "hide" it. This way, the wash cycle itself will not make any noise and your drum will not be damaged from the inside.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about laundry bags answered in detail

You now already know about those aspects you should pay attention to when buying a laundry net. Now let's move on to other aspects you should know about.

What is a laundry bag?

Let's start with the basic question of what a laundry bag actually is. A laundry bag is used to pre-separate laundry and protect it during the wash cycle.

Trousers, blouses, tops - as you can probably tell just by looking at them, such garments are fundamentally different. They should therefore also receive individual treatment when they are washed. This also applies to the use of a laundry bag. (Image source: Sarah Brown / Unsplash)

This is because such a bag prevents contact and thus abrasion on the laundry drum. This means that a laundry bag helps to keep the clothes free of defects and wear for as long as possible.

What types of laundry bags are there?

Basically, two types of laundry bags can be distinguished: On the one hand, there are the fine-meshed ones and, on the other hand, those that consist of coarse meshes. There is a simple rule to remember which type you should use and when: The more delicate the textiles to be cleaned, the finer your laundry bag should be.

When and for whom are laundry bags useful?

Without a doubt, you don't have to wash every item of clothing in a laundry bag. In the following, we have therefore compiled a list to give you an overview of which textiles need a laundry bag.

  • Bras
  • Lingerie
  • Blouses
  • Shirts
  • Stockings
  • Socks
  • Curtains
  • Shoes

What does a laundry bag cost?

It is impossible to give a general price for a laundry bag. It always depends on the particular design. On average, the price of a laundry bag is between 3 to 10 pounds.

Are laundry bags environmentally friendly?

Environmental protection is becoming more and more important these days, while microplastics can be found in almost all waters. But how can you fight against it and protect the environment?

Every single time you wash synthetic clothes, microplastics are produced and eventually end up in our wastewater. To prevent this, a laundry bag is very helpful. There are now even laundry bags that specialise in filtering out microplastics.

Can you sew laundry bags yourself?

Like some other things or everyday items, you can also make a laundry bag yourself. There are now many instructions on the internet for a so-called Do-It-Yourself project, or DIY for short.

In the following, we have collected the materials from which you can easily sew a laundry bag.

  • 2 tea towels
  • 1 cord with 2 metres
  • matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Safety pin

In summary, it can be said that there is a very large selection of laundry nets available today. These are often very precisely tailored to those textiles that should be washed in them. Nevertheless, there are still some laundry bags that can be used universally.

The aspect of environmental protection, which has steadily gained in importance over the last few years, is also taken up in the matter of laundry bags. Some of them help to trap microplastics so that they do not end up in the waste water.
