The Best Laundry Basket: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a laundry basket

What is the purpose of my laundry basket?

Make sure you know in advance what function you want your laundry basket to have. If you want a portable hamper, the bench is definitely out. If you need a lot of storage space and would like to have an inner partition for pre-sorting the laundry, then a laundry chest is exactly the right thing for you. If you want to integrate your laundry basket into your living space, the design plays a big role.

In the past, wicker baskets were mainly used for storing laundry. They are stable, permeable to air and offer a large capacity. That's why they are still suitable for your laundry today and look attractive at the same time. (Photo: Phanasitti / 123RF.com)

What material should my laundry basket be made of?

Decide in advance what colour and material you would like. This will also save you time when searching. Here you will be faced with a limitless choice: Wood, plastic, metal, woven, simple and clean lines.

If you want your laundry basket to be easy to clean, we recommend metal or plastic. If you want to integrate your laundry basket into your living space, choose a suitable colour before buying. This will narrow down the choice a little.

What size should my laundry basket be?

Besides the volume, consider which textiles will end up in your laundry basket. The main purpose of your hamper is to collect laundry. In addition to the capacity, you should also think about the textiles you want to store.

If you also want to store blankets in your hamper, you will need an opening of the appropriate size. If the laundry bag is too big and consequently too heavy, carrying the laundry will be tedious.

Are there additional features that my laundry basket should have?

Many laundry hampers are equipped with some very pleasant extras. Many clothes bins have a clothes bag that allows you to easily remove the laundry and carry it to the laundry room. A well-made handle makes it comfortable to carry. With a laundry bag, you should pay attention to the straps. If the straps are too thin, they can cut into your clothes while you are wearing them.

What material is a laundry bag made of?

Whether natural or synthetic, always look for ventilation holes and slits. These allow air to circulate and protect your laundry from mould. Not only the model and design play a major role in a clothes bin, but also the material.

Basically, a distinction is made between two types of material:

  • Natural materials
  • Synthetic materials

Both types have advantages and disadvantages.

Laundry baskets made of natural materials, such as wood, bamboo, rattan or linen, are not only eye-catching because of their appearance. Due to their natural material composition, they are breathable.

Especially lattice design and woven baskets are air-permeable and the ideal place to store your dirty laundry. The breathability and air permeability prevent mould.

If you want a laundry basket made of natural materials, pay attention to the inside of the laundry basket when buying it. The untreated material can damage your laundry. For this reason, a laundry bag should always serve as the inner lining, ideally removable and washable.

Materials made of synthetic materials, such as plastic, are usually not a stylish eye-catcher. But they do have some advantages. Plastic laundry baskets are easy to clean and have a low weight. This makes the journey from the living room to the laundry room much easier than with laundry baskets made of natural materials.

What sizes are laundry baskets available in?

Laundry baskets come in different sizes and variations. The capacity is given in litres. There are no standard dimensions for a laundry basket; depending on the design, the product dimensions vary.
Size capacity in litres
XS up to 20 l
S 20-30 l
M 40-50 l
L 60-80 l
XL from 90 l

If you want to put your laundry basket in the children's room, size S is usually enough. For a shared clothes bin in the bedroom and a regular wash cycle, size M is perfectly adequate. If you also want to store blankets, we recommend size XL.

Where do I put a laundry basket?

Typically, laundry hampers are placed in the bedroom or bathroom. The most popular places for a laundry basket are the bathroom or bedroom.

Ideally, your hamper should be placed in the bathroom next to the washing machine. Here it is important to make sure that the room is well ventilated and that there is air circulation to prevent mould on your laundry. In addition, you save yourself a trip to the washing machine.

If you don't have space in the bathroom, an alternative would be your bedroom. Here you have the option of integrating your laundry basket as an accessory in the room or hiding it in the wardrobe. Make sure there is sufficient air circulation here too.

How much does a laundry basket cost?

The price depends on your wishes, but it is usually cheaper to buy online. The price range of a laundry basket starts at around five euros. Depending on the design and material, there are no limits to the price.

It is largely determined by the functions you want. The simpler your laundry basket is, the cheaper it is. However, if you do your research online, you are usually better off saving money and time.

Wooden laundry baskets should be moisture-resistant and varnished, otherwise there is a risk that the laundry basket will start to mould.

Decision: What types of laundry baskets are there and which is the right one for you?

Where to put your not-so-pleasant-smelling T-shirt? Above the desk chair is one possibility. There are probably already a few other clothes piled up there, waiting to be washed. But there is no question of tidiness here.

A laundry basket is needed. It instantly ensures order and, if chosen correctly, is also an eye-catcher. Would you like a laundry chest, a laundry bag? In white, woven or made of wood? Now you are spoilt for choice. We'll tell you which is the right one.

There are countless design variants on the market and a large selection of different materials for your very own laundry basket.

The familiar plastic hamper

Who doesn't know it? It can be found in almost every household. Plain and made of plastic, usually white or in another not very appealing colour, it catches your eye. It is cheap to buy, practical and keeps its promise. This type of storage is clearly about function and not about form.

When buying, you can choose between different designs - square, round, comfort handle, colourful, plain, with or without a grid. If you are the functional type, then there is definitely nothing to stop you from getting this type of laundry basket.

You can choose your hamper from many designs and variations.

Laundry basket

Laundry baskets, also called laundry chests, are available in a wide variety of materials. You can choose between wood, wicker, rattan, bamboo, linen and plastic.

Laundry baskets also have a lid that allows you to hide dirty laundry easily and well in the laundry basket. Compared to an open plastic hamper, this also looks attractive. Some designs offer an interior partition to sort the clothes to be washed in advance.

Due to its size and weight, a laundry basket is mainly used for collecting clothes. A plastic basket is usually used to transport clothes to the laundry room.

Laundry bin

The laundry bin is very similar to the laundry basket. The difference is in the dimensions. The bin usually has a smaller base area and is higher than a basket. Like its "laundry basket colleagues", this variant is also available in a wide variety of materials. It is either used as an eye-catcher in the bedroom or inconspicuously hidden in the wardrobe or laundry room.

Chest / bench

A seat chest is not only nice to look at, but can also have a number of advantages, for example a place to store dirty laundry. A clever and thoughtful design does not immediately suggest that a comfortable bench is a laundry basket.

This variant comes in many different designs, from a single-seater to a bench made of wood to fabric. All options are open to you here.

Clothes peg

A very simple way of storing laundry is the clothes peg, also called a laundry collector. The design resembles a chest. Usually, the rack has a storage space at the top.

The bag should be made of a breathable fabric so that the clothes do not start to stink or even mould. A plus point of this variant is the easy removal of the laundry bag. This means that no additional basket is needed.

Laundry bag

The laundry bag is the lightest and most space-saving way to store and transport laundry. It is very suitable for singles or a one-person household. If you don't have a washing facility, you can simply walk to the launderette with your laundry bag. This way, you don't have to move your dirty laundry again.

The wash bag should be made of breathable material.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate laundry baskets

In the following section, we would like to show you which criteria you can use to compare laundry baskets in order to choose the perfect clothes collector for your home. These factors will help you decide which one is right for you.

In summary, here are the criteria to look out for:

  • Type
  • Material
  • Dimensions
  • Weight
  • Capacity
  • Suitable for
  • Ventilation
  • With lid
  • With carrying handle
  • With washable laundry bag

In the following paragraphs, you can get an overview of the individual criteria that will significantly support you when buying your tumble dryer.

The type

We have already described which type is right for you and your home. Nevertheless, we would like to point out once again that the model is the most important factor when buying your laundry basket.

You should choose a model depending on the design and placement. If you want a simple and functional clothes bin, a plastic hamper or a plastic laundry bin is perfectly adequate for you. If you want a more stylish model, a laundry basket made of rattan or wood is the right one for you.

Material

As already mentioned in the guide, there are countless materials that a laundry basket can be made of. Clothes collectors are made of natural or synthetic materials.

Natural materials such as wood, bamboo, rattan or linen are the more stylish option with a beautiful look. If you prefer a functional laundry basket, you are well advised to use a synthetic material such as plastic.

Dimensions

Please pay attention to the product dimensions of the manufacturer. The dimensions vary greatly from model to model. Before you buy a laundry basket, you should of course check that you have enough space. Check the dimensions given by the manufacturer. Laundry baskets differ greatly from one model to another.

Clothes bins with a small capacity of up to 20 litres are generally smaller and narrower. Laundry baskets in XL size require correspondingly more space.

Weight

Depending on the design and material, the tare weight varies between the different models of laundry baskets. A plastic laundry bin usually weighs between one and two and a half kilograms.

Since the frame of laundry sorters is usually made of metal, they usually weigh two to three kilograms. There are also laundry sorters made of aluminium, which weigh less than one kilogram.

Bamboo and rattan laundry baskets are in the one-and-a-half to three kilogram weight class. Wooden laundry bins usually weigh more than three kilograms.

Capacity

As already mentioned in the guide, you should pay attention to the capacity of the laundry basket. To make the right decision for you, take your laundry pile as a guide.

If you live alone, a capacity of 30 litres is perfectly adequate. Choose a laundry basket with 30 to 50 litres for a household with two people. If you have a large pile of laundry to store, we recommend buying a clothes hamper with a capacity of 80 litres or more.

Suitability

Depending on the capacity, the laundry baskets are suitable for a certain number of people. A 20-litre clothes bin is perfectly adequate for a child's room. If you live in a two-person household, we advise you to buy a laundry basket of 30 to 50 litres. If a capacity of 100 litres is indicated, this is enough for a four-person household.

When buying a laundry basket, consider the number of people in your household - the more people who use it, the bigger it should be.

Ventilation

A ventilated laundry basket will ensure that your laundry does not start to mould. As described in the guide, look for ventilation slots and openings when buying your hamper. If your laundry basket has a laundry bag inside, make sure it is made of breathable material. This allows your laundry to breathe and protects it from mould.

With lid

Laundry baskets with lids have the great advantage of protecting the room from bad smells. If your clothes bin is in the living room or bathroom, it is advisable to be able to close it. With a lid, you protect yourself and your home from bad-smelling air from your laundry basket.

With carrying handle

If you want to use your laundry basket functionally, make sure it has a handle. Laundry baskets with a stylish look may be a nice eye-catcher, but they usually make it difficult to get to the laundry room. Often no or very small openings are used as handles. These cause difficulties when carrying and usually cut into the hand.

With washable laundry bag

If your laundry basket has an integrated laundry bag, make sure that it can be removed and washed. Laundry hampers made of natural materials in particular include laundry bags to protect the laundry. Since laundry bags come into direct contact with dirty textiles, it is advisable to be able to wash them.

Facts worth knowing about laundry hampers

What tips are there against bad odours?

To prevent an unpleasant smell from your dirty laundry, we have five tips on how to handle your laundry basket properly.

Tip #1

Dry the damp laundry and only then put it in the laundry basket. This will prevent odour-causing bacteria from forming.

Tip #2

Put dryer sheets in your laundry basket. These neutralise the smell of sweat and give off a pleasant scent.

Tip #3

If your laundry basket is made of natural materials, line it with a laundry bag. This will not only protect your laundry, but you can also wash it if necessary.

Tip #4

Another trick against bad odours is a deodorant for the wardrobe. If you stick it on the inside of the laundry basket lid, odours are effectively neutralised.

Tip #5

A trick from grandma's sewing box: Put a bag filled with coffee with your dirty laundry. The breathable material and the coffee absorb bad odours.

Are there alternatives to the laundry basket?

There are no limits to your imagination. Many everyday items can serve as laundry baskets. Many people use the huge blue bags from Ikea as laundry baskets.

These are easy to fold, have a huge capacity and can be easily stored away. Some use an empty drawer or compartment to store dirty laundry.

Decorative baskets or homemade jute bags are also an alternative to a laundry basket.

Is it possible to use a laundry basket as a baby bath?

Yes, it is possible and many parents use it in the first months. All you need is a laundry basket that is waterproof. Please make sure that it does not have an anti-slip coating on the inside.
