Lava stone: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying lava stones
Are there different types of lava stones?
How many lava stones do I need for barbecuing and how many are in a bag?
Lava stones are available in various quantities. You can find small boxes with only one kilogram up to 25 kilogram bags. When buying, also pay attention to the size of the individual stones.
How much do lava stones cost?
|3 kg||4,35-38 Euro|
|5 kg||5-12 Euro|
|10 kg||8,70-13,90 Euro|
Especially with the three-kilogram sacks, there are immense price differences. The expensive stones are usually original stones from the lava stone grill manufacturer. According to recensors, however, they do not differ from the cheap "no-name" products.
Can I reuse lava stones and if so, how often and how do I clean them?
- The condition of the food to be grilled, i.e. how greasy is the food and how much fat drips onto the stones?
- Use of aluminium trays and aluminium foil
- How often are the stones cleaned?
How often the lava stones need to be renewed depends on how often the lava stones are cleaned and how much fat has collected in the stones. A good criterion for recognising that new stones are necessary is the smell during grilling and the smoke development. If the barbecue smokes more than usual and starts to smell, the lava stones need to be replaced at the latest. However, the lava stones should be changed at least once per barbecue season.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate lava stones
In the following, we would like to show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate lava stones. This will make it easier for you to find the right lava stones for your lava stone barbecue among the different products. In summary, the following criteria apply:
- Size of the lava stones
- Quantity of lava stones
- Areas of application of the lava stones
In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual factors and how you can classify them.
Lava stones come in a wide variety of sizes. It is important to know how fine-meshed your grill grid is so that the stones do not fall through it. All lava stone packs have a "from - to measurement" so the stones are actually always different sizes. Stones that are too small can quickly fall through the grid and stones that are too large often don't fit well in the grill tray. Most lava stones come in sizes between 32 mm and 70 mm. It makes sense to use the stones supplied as a guide when buying a new one.
The quantity of lava stones depends on the size of the grilling surface. Large table barbecues or lava grills with trolleys need more lava stones than small camping barbecues. The large grills are often designed for 5-6 people and have a correspondingly large grilling surface. To ensure that the heat is evenly distributed over the entire grilling surface, the lava stones must be laid out everywhere. It is important to leave a small space between the stones so that the air can circulate well. For a barbecue area of around 1600 cm², approximately five to six kilograms of lava stones are required. For camping lava grills, about 3 kg are sufficient.
Different areas of application
Lava stones can be used in a wide variety of areas. They are often found in gardens, in aquariums, as jewellery and, of course, in lava stone barbecues.
On the respective packaging you will find the exact information on how to use the stones. The material of all lava stones is usually the same. They differ more in their surface texture and size. For example, lava stones that are too large do not fit into the lava stone grill and are more advantageous for aquariums or in the garden.
Facts worth knowing about lava stones
What is special about lava stones and what do they do?
Lava is a hot mass of rock that emerges from a volcano. After cooling, a so-called lava slag is formed from which the stones can then be extracted. A special feature of lava stones is the porous structure and the perforated surface which results in a very good heat storage. The stored heat can then be transferred to the corresponding food to be grilled.
How are lava stones produced?
As the name suggests, lava stones are made from lava slag. The slag is found in areas where there were active volcanoes a long time ago. In Germany, the largest mining area for this raw material is the Eifel. There, the stones are extracted in open-cast mines and processed as an untreated and natural raw material for a wide variety of uses.
