The Best LG Air Conditioner: Our Choices

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate LG air conditioners

We give you an overview of the relevant criteria that you can use to decide between the different LG air conditioners. The following factors will help you compare the different models:

Now you can find out what the individual criteria are.

Design and construction

LG does not manufacture mobile air conditioners, but only split air conditioners. These consist of an indoor and an outdoor unit.

Outdoor units usually look quite similar. For the indoor unit, different designs are suitable depending on the structural requirements of the premises. A ceiling cassette is suitable for a suspended ceiling into which it is inconspicuously installed. It is usually placed in the centre of the room.

If you do not have a suspended ceiling or have a high ceiling, an under-ceiling unit or, in the case of LG, a "ceiling unit" is suitable. The strong air flow reaches every corner - up to a ceiling height of 4.2 metres. If you need a strong cooling capacity and do not mind draughts, such a unit is suitable.

If the air conditioner is to be completely invisible, a recessed ceiling unit - at LG "duct unit" - is ideal. The compact unit is installed completely in the ceiling or in an adjacent room.

If you need powerful performance in a very small space, a floor-standing unit is suitable. It fits into any corner and can be installed quickly.

Design Features
Ceiling cassette Suitable for suspended ceilings, inconspicuous, connection lines invisible in the ceiling, good air distribution
Under-ceiling unit No suspended ceiling required, inexpensive, quick installation, easy maintenance, strong air flow even for high ceilings
Ducted unit Invisibly installed in the ceiling, various air distribution systems can be used, uncomplicated installation and maintenance
Floor-standing unit powerful performance in a very small area, no suspended ceiling necessary, quick installation, low-priced
Wall-mounted unit draught-free air, very quiet, can cool and heat
Chest unit low-priced, compact size, quick installation

With a wall-mounted unit, you have draught-free air because the air escapes upwards. The unit is mounted on the wall like a radiator. Due to its special design and compact size, a chest unit can easily function as a floor chest, wall unit or ceiling unit. This is why it is also called a flexible unit.

The dimensions of air conditioners vary greatly for both indoor and outdoor units.

If you want a chic design for the indoor unit of your air conditioner, you should take a look at the wall unit "Artcool Gallery". With a picture frame, it looks like a wall painting. You can change the picture at any time.

This is one advantage of split units over monobloc units: The noisier part of the air conditioner is outside. Often, however, the indoor units do not work completely quietly either. LG advertises that its indoor units are up to 50% quieter than comparable models due to special screw fans and a quiet BLDC motor technology.

The indoor units sometimes only reach a quiet 19 dB and the outdoor unit about 49 dB. The units also have a whisper mode that reduces the noise level by 3 to 6 dB, depending on the model.

Did you know that in purely residential areas a maximum noise level of 50 dB(A) is permitted during the day and 35 dB(A) at night? Many outdoor air-conditioning units exceed the maximum noise level at night.

But it depends on the noise level at the next property: If the nearest building is at such a distance that the noise level arrives there sufficiently reduced, the unit is permissible.

Cooling capacity

The heat that an air conditioner has to get out of the room is called 'cooling load'. The cooling capacity tells how much cooling load the air conditioner can manage in a certain time.

An air conditioner with a low cooling capacity needs more time and energy to cool the room.

The larger the room to be cooled, the higher the cooling capacity should be.

Two units of measurement indicate the cooling capacity: BTU ("British Thermal Unit") and Watt. For air conditioners, BTU/h indicates the maximum cooling capacity per hour. The unit watt also expresses the amount of energy used in a given time: 1,000 BTU/h correspond to about 293 watts.

A cooling capacity of at least 60 watts per square metre is ideal. Thus, an air conditioner in a room with 20 square metres should provide at least 1,200 watts. Another formula recommends a cooling capacity of about 40 watts per cubic metre of room volume. Other factors influence the required cooling capacity.
For each person in the room, you calculate an additional 100-200 watts. Insulation and solar radiation also play a role. If adjoining rooms are air-conditioned, a lower cooling capacity may be sufficient. Electronic devices also emit heat. For these, you can use the wattage as a yardstick: If your PC works with 250 watts, you can add 250 watts to the required cooling capacity.

Refrigerant used

According to an EU regulation, from 2025 air conditioning systems may only contain refrigerants with a global warming potential of 750 or less. Until now, LG had used the usual refrigerant R410A with a global warming potential of 2088.

This is now no longer possible in split units with a charge of up to 3 kg. In the meantime, LG has switched most of its units to the more environmentally friendly refrigerant R32 (difluoromethane), which complies with the condition. R32 is considered a highly efficient refrigerant that ensures lower energy consumption. As it is more efficient than the previously used R410A, it can be used in much smaller quantities. The refrigerant R32 is 68% less harmful to the environment than the commonly used R410A and is easily recyclable.

Since you should never come into contact with the refrigerant, only professionals should install your air conditioner. There are certified companies for this purpose.

Energy efficiency

The SEER value is decisive for the energy efficiency of your air conditioner. This is more informative for an air conditioner than the classic energy efficiency classes from A+++ to G.

A high SEER value indicates good energy efficiency.

The SEER stands for "Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio" and indicates the ratio of cooling capacity to energy consumption.

In other words, it tells you how much electricity the air conditioner needs for its cooling capacity. In contrast to the EER value, the SEER value takes into account the respective climate. Since 2014, the EU has stipulated that split units must have a SEER value of at least 4.6. Units with a low climate-damaging refrigerant only need a value of 4.14.

Energy-efficient split air conditioners achieve a SEER value higher than 8. LG's units have SEER values of 6.6 to 8.5. In addition, an inverter air conditioner is more energy efficient than an on/off unit due to its flexible rotation speed.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an LG air conditioner

What differentiates LG air conditioners from other manufacturers?

LG Electronics offers a wide range of different electronic devices and is one of the market leaders worldwide. The company advertises intuitive and innovative technologies, ease of use, low energy consumption and an attractive design of its products.

LG air conditioners are quick and easy to install. The automatic cleaning function of the wall-mounted units prevents the formation of mould and bacteria and ensures healthy air and a long service life for the unit. In addition, LG air conditioners filter dust, pollen and cigarette smoke from the air. The air conditioners also reduce high humidity. Some of the wall units also have a heat pump function that keeps the home warm.

LG does not manufacture mobile air conditioners (monobloc units), but only split units. These consist of two parts: an indoor unit that is installed in the room and a compressor that is attached to the outside wall of the building. In addition to single-split units, LG also offers multi-split units. With these, you can connect up to ten indoor units to one central outdoor unit.

Does an inverter air conditioner make sense?

A standard air conditioner switches off as soon as the desired temperature is reached. If the temperature changes, it switches on again. The compressor of such an on/off unit rotates at the same speed all the time. In contrast, LG also offers inverter air conditioners: With these, the rotational speed of the compressor varies. The more the room temperature deviates from the set temperature, the faster the compressor rotates. If the difference decreases, it turns slower again.

The advantage: Inverting air conditioners consume less electricity and operate more quietly. At the same time, they reach the desired temperature much faster than on/off air conditioners. You usually pay a little more for an inverting air conditioner, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

In what price range can I get an LG air conditioner?

LG only sells split air conditioners, which are slightly more expensive than mobile air conditioners. But with a split air conditioner you have lower energy costs and better cooling performance. The cost depends on the type of unit, the dimensions and the features such as possible heating capacity.

You can buy the indoor unit and the outdoor unit either separately or together as a set. The outdoor unit costs more than the indoor unit. A single-split outdoor unit starts at 600 €, while a multi-split outdoor unit costs 800 € to over 5,000 €. Indoor units are available from €340, with units costing up to over €5,000.

What are the alternatives to an LG air conditioner?

LG only produces split air conditioners. You have to install them permanently in the building, which requires drilling through walls.
Since the compact monobloc units consist of only one unit, unlike split units, they are also called monobloc units.

If your landlord does not allow this or if you only need the air conditioner occasionally, a mobile air conditioner is a good option. A mobile air conditioner ("monobloc unit") costs less to buy but has higher electricity costs.

If it is only used occasionally, it is worthwhile. Mobile air conditioners are also available from electrical retailers. Manufacturers such as De'Longhi, Trotec, Argo, Wiland or Klarstein offer efficient air conditioners. If you are looking for another manufacturer of split air conditioners, Samsung, Midea, Mitsubishi, Daikin or Heiko offer a selection.

How do I disinfect the LG air conditioner?

To keep your air conditioner working thoroughly, you should clean it regularly. You should disinfect it, as mould and germs easily accumulate in an air conditioner. Otherwise, the unit will spread the particles in your room, which can lead to allergic reactions and illnesses.

You can remove removable parts such as the grille and air filter with a screwdriver and clean them separately. Cleaning the air filter is particularly important. It can quickly become clogged, which weakens the cooling performance of the unit. You should clean it once a month. You can find special disinfectant sprays for cleaning air conditioners in shops and on the Internet. These disinfect both the evaporator and the ventilation system of the air conditioner. You should also clean the outside unit of the split air conditioner, as it sucks in particles such as pollen. Wipe the dirt from the inside to the outside.

How often you should clean the air conditioner depends on various factors such as the model and the intensity of use. Some experts recommend cleaning the air conditioner once a year. However, if you notice a musty smell in the room, it might be time for a cleaning.

Why does my LG air conditioner make unusual noises?

An air conditioner always makes a certain amount of noise. However, it is usually relatively quiet during normal operation, especially with modern units. If your LG air conditioner makes humming or vibrating noises, this can be due to various reasons, such as clogged filters or blocked vents. The following table gives you an overview of the possible causes.
Occurrence and type of noise Cause
Noises when switching off Since each component repositions itself as originally when switched off, noises are common here. Noises are also normal when first used.
Humming noises from the indoor unit Clogged or blocked filter. There may be a leak, causing condensation on the vane.
Humming noises from the outdoor unit Clogged air filter. Blocked air inlet and outlet due to objects. Motor may vibrate if outdoor unit is placed unevenly.

Basically, it can help to clean your filter regularly. If there are obstacles in the vicinity of the air conditioner, you should remove them. If the outdoor unit makes noise, check that it is level and stable. If not, adjust the position if possible.

If the unit is mounted on a roller shutter or on a cabinet, you can place damping rubber pads under the outdoor unit or fix vibrating parts with cable ties.
