The Best Light Alarm Clock: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a light alarm clock

How does a light alarm clock work?

A light alarm clock is a sunrise simulator that wakes you up with an increasingly bright light. Light alarm clocks are also called wake-up lights or daylight alarm clocks. These daylight alarm clocks have an integrated LED or halogen light. The light starts to shine 20 to 60 minutes before the scheduled wake-up time. The light gets brighter and brighter over time. lichtwecker You perceive the light through your closed eyes and your melatonin production (sleep hormone) is slowed down. Analogous to the natural course of the day and your biological clock, you are gently awakened. Some alarm clocks not only simulate sunlight with a brighter light, but also change colour from deep red to bright white.

This effect also creates a pleasant atmosphere that resembles the sunrise. However, it is only the blue component in the light that wakes you up. At the end of the wake-up phase, an additional acoustic signal sounds. Depending on the wake-up light, you can choose between a radio function, music from your iPod, normal wake-up sounds or natural sounds.

What are the advantages of an alarm clock with light function?

The light of the wake-up light has an activating effect and you start the day relaxed. A light alarm clock can also have a positive effect on problems falling asleep. The slowly brightening light of the alarm clock slowly ends your deep sleep phase. With a daylight alarm clock, you start the day refreshed and are not suddenly jolted out of sleep by a shrill sound. The light also has a stimulating effect due to its blue component.

Especially if you tend to go to bed late and therefore don't get out of bed well in the morning, a wake-up light has an activating effect on your body. So if you are one of the "owls", it will make it easier for you to get up. Especially in the winter months, when it is still dark in the morning, an alarm clock with a light function is very beneficial.

  • Light has an activating effect
  • Deep sleep phase is slowly terminated
  • can also be used if you have trouble falling asleep

With some daylight alarm clocks, the light can also be dimmed in reverse order, i.e. from light to dark. With this function, a light alarm clock also helps you with problems falling asleep.

How much does a light alarm clock cost?

Light alarm clocks range in price from 20 euros to over 200 euros. Inexpensive wake-up lights are available for as little as 20 euros. However, you may have to make concessions in terms of durability and workmanship. Good brand-name models are available from about 80 euros. High-quality light alarm clocks with special features, however, can cost over 200 euros.

What alternatives are there to the light alarm clock?

Traditional analogue or digital alarm clocks can be used instead of the light alarm clock. There are also LED alarm clocks that can be used as an alternative. The following table gives an overview of the possible alternatives and their advantages and disadvantages:

Type of alarm clock Description
Analogue alarm clock This type of alarm clock works by supplying batteries as well as manual operation. An analogue alarm clock is used exclusively for the function of waking up.
Radio-controlled alarm clock The radio-controlled alarm clock is a quartz clock. It receives a signal via radio and then processes it. Radio-controlled alarm clocks are available in a wide variety of designs with different functions.
LED alarm clock An LED alarm clock runs either on batteries or on a power connection via USB cable. LED alarm clocks are also available in different versions with various functions.

Decision: What types of light alarm clocks are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between four types of light alarm clocks:

  • Pure light alarm clock
  • Light alarm clock with alarm tones
  • Light alarm clock with radio function
  • Light alarm clock with USB and MP3 function

Depending on how you would like to be woken up, a different type of light alarm clock is best suited for you. Each type of alarm clock has its own advantages and disadvantages. We would like to help you decide which type of daylight alarm clock is right for you.

In the following section, we will introduce you to the four types of wake-up lights mentioned above and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each.

How does a pure light alarm clock work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Pure daylight alarm clocks have the great advantage that they wake you up particularly gently and softly. If you can't stand shrill alarm tones and loud noises in the morning, a light alarm clock without additional wake-up functions is the best choice.

  • Gentle gentle awakening
  • No unpleasant noises
  • No guaranteed wake-up
  • Lengthy wake-up

Pure daylight alarm clocks are the basic version of light alarm clocks. They wake you up solely by increasingly brighter light and not by additional sounds. Their disadvantage is that this alarm mechanism can be too gentle for some people. Not everyone wakes up from light alone. Especially if you turn your face away from the light alarm clock while sleeping, you might oversleep.

How does a light alarm clock with alarm tones work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Besides the basic form, there are also wake-up lights with additional alarm tones. These have the advantage that they are guaranteed to wake you up, even if you don't wake up from the light alone. So if you are afraid that you are sleeping too deeply to be woken up only by an artificial sunrise, a light alarm clock with alarm tones offers you additional security.

  • Guaranteed alarm function
  • Faster wake-up
  • Monotonous
  • Partially unnatural sounds

Another advantage is that you can wake up much faster with a daylight alarm clock with alarm sounds than with pure light alarm clocks. The sounds that such daylight alarm clocks offer are usually natural sounds such as birdsong or the sound of water. However, you should make sure that the alarm clock has a good sound quality.

How does a light alarm clock with radio function work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

If the same alarm tone every day is too monotonous for you, a light alarm clock with radio function is a good choice. Most wake-up lights nowadays already have a radio function. The advantage is that you can simply tune in your favourite radio station to wake you up. The programme that is on at the time you want to get up will then be played.

  • More varied
  • Individual
  • Random programme
  • Reception must be available

A disadvantage can arise if the radio reception is not good where you have your light alarm clock. In the worst case, the light alarm clock will then only buzz quietly and not wake you up at all. Of course, it can also happen that the station is currently broadcasting commercials.

How does a light alarm clock with USB and MP3 function work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The light alarm clock with USB or MP3 function allows you to play your own music individually. This means you can choose the song you would like to wake up to. Whether it's a soft ballad, loud rock music or your favourite audio book is up to you.

  • Individual
  • Varied
  • Wake-up music specifically selectable
  • More expensive
  • Compatibility must be considered

Daylight alarm clocks of this type make it possible to connect an MP3 player, smartphone or USB stick to the alarm clock and import your favourite hits. However, care should be taken to ensure that the devices are compatible. The connection alone is no guarantee that your device can then also be connected to the wake-up light.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate light alarm clocks

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate light alarm clocks. This will make it easier for you to decide which daylight alarm clock is best for you. The distinguishing features are:

  • Duration of wake-up function
  • Twilight function
  • Light intensity / brightness
  • Illuminant
  • Colour levels
  • Alarm times
  • Alarm tones
  • Radio function
  • Snooze function
  • Dimmable display
  • Power failure protection
  • Radio clock
  • Bedside lamp function
  • Weight and dimensions
  • App control

Duration of the wake-up function

The sunrise function is the essential feature of the light alarm clock. The duration and adjustability varies from model to model. Some manufacturers allow you to adjust this duration individually to your needs and preferences, while others have a fixed duration.

The duration of the simulated sunrise varies with the different wake-up lights from approx. 20 to 90 minutes.

Depending on the time, you will be woken up slower or faster by the brighter lamp.

Dawn function

Some light alarm clocks also have a sunset function, which makes it easier for you to fall asleep. Not all wake-up lights also offer the option of dimming the light in reverse order - from bright to dark. If you only use the light alarm clock to get out of bed in the morning, this is not a disadvantage.

However, if you also suffer from problems falling asleep, we recommend that you pay attention to the twilight function.

Did you know that people spend an average of 6 years dreaming? However, snoring and dreaming are not possible in parallel. So those who snore a lot dream less.

Light intensity / brightness

The luminous intensity of the light sources varies greatly among the light alarm clocks. A luminous intensity of 200 lux or more will help you get up. Lux is the unit of measurement for illuminance.

A light alarm clock should have 200 to 300 lux at the end of the wake-up function. This level of illuminance is roughly equivalent to living room lighting and is the level of illuminance at which few people can simply continue to sleep. To give you a better idea of the lux number, here are some examples:

example Lux
candle 1
office lighting 500
TV studio 1,000
overcast winter day 3,500
summer day in the shade 10,000
overcast summer day 20,000
bright summer day 100,000

With some light alarm clocks you can adjust the brightness individually.

Most light alarm clocks use LEDs as illuminants, but some manufacturers also use halogen lamps. Both LED and halogen have advantages and disadvantages in wake-up lights. In many models of alarm clocks with light function, the LED bulbs cannot be replaced.

With a service life of up to 10,000 hours of light, this corresponds to approx. 28 years of daily use of the light alarm clock and should therefore not be a problem. If halogen bulbs have been installed in the light alarm clocks, you will have to replace the bulbs more often. However, you can also adjust the brightness of the lamp afterwards.

Colour steps

By changing the colour, the sunrise is simulated even better. However, this effect only has an influence on the atmosphere, not on the wake-up function. Many light alarm clocks offer several colour levels that simulate the beginning of the day. Often, the light source changes its colour from "dawn" to "daylight white". But some wake-up lights also have a colour change from red to blue.

Neither the number of colour levels nor the colours are a sign of the quality of a light alarm clock. Only the blue spectrum (which is also present in white light) has a stimulating effect and thus wakes you up.

Alarm times

If you want to get up at a different time on the weekend, pay attention to how many wake-up times can be programmed into your light alarm clock. Many daylight alarm clocks only offer one setting for the alarm time. So if you want to get up at a different time on some days, you always have to change the time every day. However, some models offer you the advantage that up to ten alarm times can be stored.

Did you know that most people need between 6 and 8 hours of sleep to feel fit the next day? In contrast, giraffes only need 2 hours, while snakes can sleep for 3 years at a time.

Alarm tones

Besides the sunrise function, a light alarm clock also wakes you up - at the end - with an additional alarm tone. With some wake-up lights, the alarm tone is not adjustable. Only a normal typical sound is stored. However, some alarm clock models offer several alarm tones to choose from. Often, you can also select natural tones, which additionally support a relaxed wake-up.

Radio function

If you want to wake up to the latest songs or news, make sure your light alarm clock has a radio function. In addition to the alarm tones, some daylight alarm clocks also offer the option of waking up with radio music. However, an integrated radio is not a matter of course.

Snooze function

If you are one of those people who like to turn over again, your daylight alarm clock needs a snooze function. Who does not know it. The alarm clock rings and you press the "snooze" button and snuggle into the blanket once more.

Most models offer this function. However, since you are awakened slowly and gently, you should usually be awake before the alarm tone and then get up. Turning over again does not bring about the desired rest effect and is rather counterproductive.

Dimmable display

The display of a light alarm clock is dimmable because the alarm clock has to be very close to your head. This can be done automatically or manually. In order for the light of the alarm clock to wake you up, it should be close to your head.

The display light would therefore disturb you when you fall asleep or sleep through the night. That is why they are dimmable. Many light alarm clocks do this automatically, some can only be set manually.

Power failure protection

To ensure that you are woken up in the morning as usual even if there is a power cut, your wake-up light should have a backup battery. Otherwise, the settings will be deleted in the event of a power failure, and your wake-up time or other settings could be lost.

Radio-controlled clock

To ensure that your light alarm clock always shows the correct time, it is a plus if it has a radio-controlled clock. This way you don't have to worry about summer or winter time. The alarm clock will always show the correct time automatically.

Bedside lamp function

With good brightness, light alarm clocks can often also be used as bedside lamps. Since a good lux level of 200 to 300 lux is roughly equivalent to living room lighting, you can often use wake-up lights as reading lamps without any problems. lichtwecker

Weight and dimensions

If you have space problems on your bedside table, pay attention to the weight and dimensions of the light alarm clock. However, light alarm clocks are usually about 20 x 20 x 20 cm and take up the space of a bedside lamp. They are therefore less suitable as travel alarm clocks. The weight is usually between 500g and 1 kg.

App control

High-quality light alarm clock models also offer the option of making settings via Android or iOS app. The collected data can also be tracked in the apps. This way, you know how your current sleep quality is and you may be given suggestions on how to improve your sleep results.

Facts worth knowing about light alarm clocks

What is the difference between a light alarm clock and light therapy?

Light alarm clocks work by varying the intensity of light, while light therapy works by varying the amount of light emitted. A light alarm clock helps with problems falling asleep and waking up. Especially in the dark winter months or if you generally have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, a wake-up light can support you very well.

Light therapy, on the other hand, is a recognised treatment method. It is prescribed by doctors for seasonal depression or sleep problems related to shift work. In these cases, the body produces too much melatonin (sleep hormone) due to a lack of light. In regular sessions, you are placed in front of a light shower, an intense light source with up to 10,000 lux, to regulate your hormone production. This stops the increased release of melatonin and gives you more energy again.

How do you set the light alarm clock correctly?

To ensure that the light alarm clock can optimally fulfil its gentle wake-up function, you should not place it too far away and regulate the brightness of the display. The optimum distance between the wake-up light and your head is a maximum of 70 cm so that the light falls on your eyes.

Only then can the light alarm clock wake you up with increasing brightness. In addition, you should not set the display too bright so that its light does not disturb you when you fall asleep or sleep through the night. The wake-up time, i.e. the time in which the light of the light alarm clock slowly becomes brighter, can be set individually according to your preferences between 20 and 90 minutes.
