Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a linen cupboard

What should I look for in a linen cupboard?

The most important thing to consider when buying a linen cupboard is the material. Most of them are made of wood, but there are also various differences. You also need to consider how big the cupboard should be. Here it is important what you want to store in the cupboard and/or how much. You also have to make sure that the wardrobe is not too big for your flat or house. The number of doors also depends on the dimensions.

You can assume that the more doors a linen cupboard has, the more you can store.

Last but not least, some linen cupboards come with castors. This makes moving the wardrobe much easier.

How can I build a linen cupboard myself?

To build a simple linen cupboard, you need the following things:

  • Nine wooden boards
  • Six wooden slats
  • Four squared timbers
  • Wooden dowels
  • Wood glue
  • Three door hinges
  • Screws
  • Cordless screwdriver and drill
  • Two door handles
  • Wood varnish or oil

The size of the wooden boards depends on the size of the cupboard you want to build.

One wooden board is needed for the back of the cupboard, two for the sides, two for the floor and the top, three for the various shelves and one for the door. The six wooden slats serve as supports for the shelves and the squared timbers for the feet of the washing cupboard. First you have to build the framework. For this you need five wooden boards, one for the back, one for the sides and one for the bottom and top. First you need to drill holes for the wooden dowels in the narrow edges of the wooden boards. The holes should be about 1 cm deep. Then fill them with wood glue. Then hammer the wooden dowels into the holes in the wooden panel that is intended for the back and stick them together with the side panels. Then attach the lid and the bottom to the boards. If you want to make it easier, you can connect the wooden panels with screws and/or metal brackets, but these will then be visible. After that, the four squared timbers, which should be about 7 cm long, have to be attached to the base plate using wood glue. To attach the shelves inside the cupboard, screw the wooden strips, parallel to each other, to the inside of the side panels. The shelves just have to be placed on them. Now you just have to attach the door to the frame. To do this, you need the three hinges. With the help of the hinges and a few screws, the door is fixed so that it can be opened and closed easily. Finally, the door handles are mounted on the door. If you like, you can now paint or oil your wardrobe. You can also find these instructions, with exact details, at www.selber-bauen.de.

What are the alternatives to a linen cupboard?

There are not many alternatives to a linen cupboard, but we present ours in the following table.
Alternative Description
Laundry baskets Laundry baskets are perfect for you if you don't have that much space in the flat or in your house. They are available in different materials, such as wood, bamboo, cotton or plastic. They are either simple or have a very beautiful design
Laundry boxes Laundry boxes are also best for small spaces. They are available in different colours and materials. With laundry baskets, it is important to ensure that they are well ventilated, otherwise fungi and bacteria can spread.

Both alternatives are great for small flats and houses, but you should be aware that they do not have the same capacity as a linen closet.

Decision: What types of linen cupboards are there and which is the right one for you?

To help you decide which linen cupboard is right for you, we have compiled a list of different linen cupboards made of different materials and their advantages and disadvantages. You can choose between the following materials:

  • Oak linen cupboard
  • Pine linen cupboard
  • Beech linen cupboard
  • Linen cupboard in fabric

You can find out which material suits your needs in this section.

What are the characteristics of an oak linen cupboard and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Only the heartwood of the oak is used for processing oak wood. It has an even grain.

Advantages
  • Long-lasting
  • Robust
  • Resistant to external influences
  • Absorbs wood preservatives well
Disadvantages
  • Nails can rust and thus discolour the wood
  • Tears quickly

The English oak is used for the production of oak wood. This is also known as summer oak or German oak. The oak is found not only in Central Europe, but also in North America and Asia.

What are the characteristics of a pine linen cupboard and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Pine wood has a whitish-yellow colour that turns reddish-yellow. The wood can darken after some time and then takes on a reddish-brown colour. The grain of pine wood is very clearly visible.

Advantages
  • Lightweight
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Native wood
  • Stable
Disadvantages
  • Colour can change due to sunlight
  • Susceptible to blue stain fungi
  • Susceptible to scratches and pressure marks

The life of pine wood can be extended with wood preservatives, but it needs a lot of maintenance compared to other types of wood.

What distinguishes a beech linen cupboard and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

When we talk about beech, we usually mean the red beech. Beech wood has a light yellowish to pinkish-brown colour and hardly darkens due to sunlight.

Advantages
  • Very strong
  • Durable
  • Elastic
Disadvantages
  • Warps strongly
  • Tears quickly
  • Heavy

Beech wood is harder than oak wood, but beech trees are also found in North America and North-East Asia, where they are also popular for the production of furniture.

What distinguishes a fabric linen cupboard and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The frame of a fabric linen cupboard is made of metal. However, this type of cupboard is also well suited for keeping linen in order. The metal is enclosed in a breathable non-woven fabric.

Advantages
  • Is quick to assemble and disassemble
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • Space-saving
Disadvantages
  • Not waterproof

Side pockets are ideal for storing small items. The fabric cupboard can be easily "closed" with the help of a zip. Because the wardrobe is easy to fold, it is compact and very easy to transport.

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate linen cupboards based on these factors

Material

The purchasing criterion at the top of the list is the material. This is the first criterion you should think about. We presented four different materials and their advantages and disadvantages in the decision section. Now it's up to you which one you choose. Oak is durable and robust. It can absorb wood preservatives well and is resistant to external influences. However, metals oxidise and discolour the wood. It also cracks quickly.

Where your linen cupboard is placed is entirely up to you. Depending on the size, the wardrobe can be placed in the bedroom, the bathroom or the hallway.

Pine is light, stable and relatively inexpensive. It is also a native wood. Unfortunately, the colour of the wood changes due to exposure to sunlight. Furthermore, pine wood is susceptible to blue stain fungi, as well as scratches and pressure marks. On the one hand, beech wood is very strong, durable and elastic. On the other hand, it is heavy, cracks quickly and warps strongly. A linen cupboard made of fabric is light, cheap and space-saving. It is also quick to assemble and disassemble. However, the fabric is not waterproof.

Dimensions

Once you have decided on a material, you need to see how big the linen cupboard can be. To do this, first find a place in your flat or house where you would like to place the cupboard. You need to measure this spot. This will tell you how big or how small your wardrobe needs to be in order to be used perfectly. The number of doors also depends on the measurements. If you can't find a suitable linen cupboard, you can have your cupboard customised and built on some sites.

Number of doors

As already mentioned, the dimensions depend on the number of doors.

The more doors a linen cupboard has, the larger it is.

Common linen cupboards have two doors. However, a linen cupboard can have up to four doors. You should also bear in mind that wardrobes with more doors are also more expensive. There are also cupboards available that do not have doors, but this does not protect them from dust and other external influences.

Castors

Linen cupboards with castors are unique because you can move them around as you like. They are also great if you are moving house or renovating your home or want to completely change the design. You don't need much strength because you only have to push the wardrobe and not carry it. This means you don't do anything bad to your body, as it would otherwise be hard on your back. If your wardrobe does not have castors, you can buy some and mount them yourself. You can find out what to look out for in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPKX0EOp64A

Facts worth knowing about the topic of linen cupboard

What can I do against unpleasant odours in the linen cupboard?

There are a few things you can do about unpleasant odours in your linen cupboard. But you have to make sure that mould is not the cause. You can, for example, buy scented sachets or make your own, which you can then place between your laundry. Scented pillows are also great for getting rid of musty smells. You can even hang some of them up. If you want to do some magic with home remedies, we recommend oranges and cloves. To do this, cut an orange in half and put ten to 15 cloves in the skin. Place the orange halves on a surface such as a small plate. Then you just have to put it in the cupboard. Another remedy can be made from coffee, salt and lemon. Put coffee in an egg cup. It should be about two-thirds of the egg cup. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and add the juice of half a lemon. All you have to do is mix it all together and put it in the laundry cupboard.

What is the best way to sort the laundry in the cupboard?

There are three ways to sort the laundry in the cupboard. Option one is to sort the laundry by type. That is, towels with towels, sheets with sheets, etc. Option two is to sort the laundry by colour. If you don't have that many colours in your wardrobe, this is a good solution to organise them.

Option three is to arrange the laundry by fabric. This makes it easier to reach for the right items. It also makes washing easier. For drawers, cardboard boxes or plastic containers are suitable for keeping everything tidy.

What can I do with a sloping roof?

There are also suitable cupboards for sloping ceilings. So you don't have to worry about not finding a suitable linen cupboard. You can also configure your own sloping roof wardrobe. This way you have a unique wardrobe at home.

Do I need baskets for a linen cupboard?

Baskets can be a great help in structuring your wardrobe. You can use baskets to organise small items that would otherwise just lie around in the cupboard. Baskets can keep your wardrobe tidy, but you have to remember that the bigger the basket, the more we tend to throw things in. This creates clutter, but it's not visible at first glance.
