The additional intake of vitamins must be done responsibly. When buying vitamin D supplements, the following aspects must be considered.

Active ingredient

Most active ingredients and vitamin D preparations are not vegan. The active ingredient of these preparations is mainly extracted from the wool wax or wool fat of sheep. In our time, however, it is possible to obtain vegan vitamin D.

Man can distinguish between animal and plant vitamin D.

This is done by a certain type of lichen. Lichens belong to a group of fungi. There are almost no differences between the animal and the plant vitamin D. Both the animal and the plant origin of vitamin D are equally available to the human body (1). This means that vegans also have the opportunity to take vitamins of plant origin.

Combination preparation

If vitamin D is to be taken for bone formation, then a combination with other vitamins is quite useful. Vitamin K2 is necessary for bone formation. It contributes to normal blood clotting and bone maintenance. (2) Taking vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium in the body. Vitamin K2 is necessary for the proper utilisation of calcium in the body. This prevents the storage of calcium in undesirable places.

It is important to pay attention to the combination of several vitamins.

Magnesium and vitamin D also work well in combination. Magnesium is responsible for the synthesis and conversion of vitamin D. Vitamin D, however, is involved in the absorption of magnesium. Vitamin D, however, is involved in the absorption of magnesium. (3) Therefore, magnesium deficiency also results in vitamin D deficiency. Therefore, magnesium status should be checked occasionally. Dosage

Such additives do not promote the effect of vitamin D and can also be allergens. It is best to take vitamin D supplements without additives if possible. You should also pay attention to the yield of the preparation. When buying, you have to choose the product that will last as long as possible. Liquid vitamin D, for example, has a high yield and can be used by the whole family over a longer period of time. (5)

What is vitamin D and why do I need it?

Vitamin D plays a special role for our body among other vitamins. Vitamin D is counted among the hormones because it is produced in our body. A prerequisite for the sufficient formation of this vitamin is solar radiation or UVB radiation. This has an effect on the skin and promotes vitamin D formation. It is involved in numerous metabolic processes in our body. Vitamin D also plays a major role in our health. It is involved in bone formation and muscle strength. (6, 7) Vitamin D also plays an important role in the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases as well as pregnancy. (8, 9)

Bone formation

Bone tissue is constantly being built up and broken down. Vitamin D is important for these processes because it can promote bone formation and regulate the calcium level in the blood. When sufficient vitamin D is produced in the body, optimal mineralisation of the bones can be ensured. Vitamin D in the context increases calcium absorption from the intestine into the bloodstream.

It also decreases calcium excretion through the kidneys. Vitamin D promotes the formation and maturation of bone cells. Among its other functions, it can increase the build-up of calcium in the bones. (8) Vitamin D deficiency, on the other hand, leads to an increasing number of hip fractures in seniors. (10)

Nervous system

Vitamin D is responsible for controlling the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase in the adrenal glands. It regulates the production and release of dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline. These hormones can influence our mood and play an important role in stress management. If not enough vitamin D is produced in our body, these neurohormones are released more. This increased release leads to chronic fatigue and permanent states of exhaustion.

For this reason, intensive research is now being conducted into how vitamin D can affect the central nervous system. It has even been proven that vitamin D is used in the prevention of several diseases of a mental nature. These are multiple sclerosis, depression, dementia, Parkinson's disease or stroke. (11) Vitamin D serves to modulate the immune response of the organism. It differentiates the T-helper cells and inhibits the formation of pathogenic cells. (12)

Prevention of diseases

Vitamin D plays a role in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, schizophrenia or dementia. In a study from 2014, it was proven that subjects with vitamin D deficiency had a higher risk of dementia. It was also found that eating a balanced diet and supporting average vitamin D levels can significantly reduce the risk of developing the mental illnesses. (13)

When and for whom is it useful to take vitamin D?

The skin's ability to synthesise vitamin D decreases over time. In addition, it becomes more difficult to convert vitamin D into its active form. This means that people in their 70s can produce 4 times less vitamin D compared to when they were young.

The reason for this is the actual skin condition and the slowing down of the metabolic processes. There are also some factors that can also affect vitamin D production in the skin. Dark skin types, for example, need longer sun exposures because melanin slows down vitamin D3 formation. Sunscreens can prevent vitamin D formation in the skin during the application period. Additional intake of vitamin D is recommended for the other risk groups:

  1. Elderly people from about 70 years of age.
  2. Seniors in need of care who rarely leave the house.
  3. People who suffer from chronic gastrointestinal, liver or kidney disease.
  4. People with dark skin colour types, because increased melanin levels strongly block the sun's UVB radiation.
  5. People who do not go out in the sun with uncovered skin at all.
  6. Infants. Because the vitamin D content in mother's milk is low and the baby's skin must not be exposed to strong sunlight. (14, 10)

How much does liquid vitamin D cost?

The price of liquid vitamin D in drops can vary significantly. The prices for the desired product of a vitamin D depend on several factors. For example, a high-dose vitamin D preparation costs less on average than a small-dose one. The origin of the active ingredient can also affect the price. Combinatorial substances are also a factor that can influence the price.

In general, prices vary between 3 and 80 euros.

The price also depends on the manufacturer. Although the prices for comparable vitamin D preparations are roughly the same, they can differ depending on the supplier or brand as well as the ingredients. Therefore, it is worthwhile to determine a desired preparation and one's own needs before purchasing vitamin D. An appointment with your family doctor is a necessity.

What types of vitamin D products are there?

In the meantime, there are various ways to take vitamin D. There are various vitamin D preparations on the market:

  • Tablets
  • Injection
  • Capsules
  • Drops
  • Fortified food

There are 3 materials to use. Vitamin D2, vitamin D3 and vegan vitamin D3. Vitamin D2 can be found mainly in plants and plant products. Vitamin D3 is mainly found in animal products. Vitamin D3 can also have a plant origin.

When is vitamin D deficient?

Vitamin D is an important vitamin in the body that is responsible for several metabolic processes. Its importance for the body should not be underestimated. However, you should not take vitamin D in an uncontrolled and arbitrary manner. However, it is important to know the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. These include fatigue, for example. Also, if you have no appetite and experience inner turmoil, it can be a sign of vitamin D deficiency.

If you have constant muscle cramps and sleep disturbances, you must contact your family doctor immediately. Because these symptoms can be caused not only by vitamin D deficiency. You may also be prescribed vitamin D supplements for tingling and numbness. To determine vitamin D deficiency, it is sufficient to take a laboratory test at the family doctor. This test shows the form in which vitamin D is stored in your body. The doctor can use these values to determine whether you should receive additional vitamin D supplements. (16)

How should liquid vitamin D be dosed?

The official recommendation of the German Nutrition Society for children and adults regarding the vitamin D content is 20 µg/day or 80 IU. These values are highly debated and criticised. It is claimed that the daily requirement of vitamin D should be much higher. The vitamin D normal values serve as an orientation whether the vitamin D formation in the body is sufficient or whether there is a vitamin D deficiency. Is there a vitamin D overdose?

Vitamin D is found in small amounts in food. That is why it is almost impossible to get a vitamin D overdose from food. It is also not possible to overdose on vitamin D from sunlight, because the skin regulates the formation processes of the vitamin once a sufficiently high serum level has been reached. Therefore, it is not possible to overdose on vitamin D naturally.

The situation is different if vitamin D supplements are taken without a doctor's recommendation. If high doses of vitamin D are taken continuously, this can lead to vitamin D poisoning. This happens when you take more than 100 micrograms of vitamin D per day on a permanent basis. The symptoms of overdose could be nausea or muscle weakness, and in more severe cases vomiting or persistent drowsiness. (16)

Are there any side effects of liquid vitamin D?

Liquid vitamin D has no side effects if it is dosed and taken properly. The known side effects of vitamin D supplements can be attributed to three central causes.

  • Permanent overdose
  • Lack of important combination preparations
  • Additives in the preparation

Continuous intake of large doses of vitamin D causes increased calcium absorption and its deposition. If vitamin K2 and magnesium are excluded, the removal of calcium can be impaired, which can lead to metabolic problems. A deficiency of vitamin K2 can lead to a deposition of calcium in the tissues and joints. As a result, kidney stones and calcification of vessels appear. Therefore, it is important not to overdose on vitamin D and to take it with all the necessary combination substances, i.e. magnesium and vitamin K2.

What alternatives are there to liquid vitamin D?

The body is supplied with vitamin D in two ways:

  • Foods containing vitamin D
  • Endogenous formation in the skin through solar radiation

The last pathway provides 80-90 per cent of the vitamin D formation. Various aspects play a role in this. For example, the time of year, clothing, skin type and cloud cover can affect the formation of vitamin D in the skin.

In winter and autumn, people spend less time in the sun due to the weather. It is recommended to be outside two to three times a week. This way you can promote vitamin D formation in the skin. Vitamin D can also be supplied through food. Foods containing vitamin D are herring, salmon, mackerel, liver and mushrooms. However, taking vitamin D supplements is only recommended in special cases. If an insufficient vitamin D supply has been proven, the additional supplements can be taken.
