What is a magic eye?

With the dangers of cities, especially in metropolises, many prefer to ensure as much safety as possible. The magic eye is one of the items that can help you feel more comfortable inside your home.

Common especially in flats, it allows you to see who is outside your door. So before you open it, you can confirm the identity of your visitors.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the magic eye?

The biggest advantage is the added security you gain. In addition, nowadays, you can even purchase digital models, which provide a series of facilities and features that will make you even safer, such as the motion sensor.

Some devices take pictures or record videos every time a person appears in front of the house.

Traditional models have the advantage of being cheaper. If you are looking for a simple magic eye, which only allows you to look sometimes to check who is at your door, this type will do.

Among its disadvantages is the installation. You need to drill a hole in the door to get the magic eye installed. Also, digital models are a bit expensive. However, they usually provide good value for money.

  • Provides more security
  • You can see who is at your door
  • Digital models can take pictures or film
  • Provides a good cost-benefit
  • Traditional magic eyes are very cheap
  • Installation requires a drill
  • Digital models are often expensive

How do I install a magic eye?

Installing a magic eye is not exactly the most difficult task in the world, however, it is important to follow a step-by-step procedure to ensure it is securely fixed.

  • Measure the door: There is no one right measurement to follow, it will depend on the average height of the household. If everyone is taller, the magic eye should be installed higher up. If they are shorter, place them lower.
  • Drill the hole: After marking according to height, it's time to drill the hole. Use a drill to do this. Internally, the drill should go halfway through the thickness of your door. Then, it's time to do the procedure again to drill the hole. Be very careful not to damage your door!
  • Install the magic eye: To install, simply disassemble the magic eye, snap in the cylinder and place the outer part on the outside of the door. The lens should face inwards.
  • Clean your magic eye: Because of the dust that can arise from using a drill, give your magic eye a little cleaning to prevent infection. Simply wipe with an alcohol wipe.

The process for installing a traditional or electronic magic eye is the same. You fix the small monitor behind the door, and you can see it at a wider angle.

Magic eye type

As you may have noticed throughout the text, there are two main types of magic eyes: traditional and digital. But what exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of each? We explain them to you!

The traditional magic eye is the one that has been used for generations, the most common in flats all over the country. It is a simple, practical and very cheap item. It is ideal for those looking for a model just to see when someone rings the doorbell, to confirm identity.

With many more functions, the digital magic eye guarantees even greater security for your home. They can capture images and videos of who passes by your house. In addition, some models even have a motion sensor.

If for some reason you are looking for greater security for your flat or house, this is a great option. In addition, the digital models also have a wider angle of vision than the traditional ones. Their disadvantage is the price which is much higher than the traditional magic eyes.

Traditional Magic Eye Digital Magic Eye
Advantages Offers practicality and simplicity, allowing you to look who is at your door spending very little With the ability to take pictures and record videos, often only with the motion sensor, it is an option that ensures more security. Besides, it has a wider angle of vision
Disadvantages It has a smaller range angle and does not capture images It is much more expensive than the traditional model
Indication People who just want to see who is at the door when the bell rings People who seek to increase the security of their home
Average Price £ 20 £ 500

The body of the magic eye is usually made of two materials: metal or plastic. If possible, opt for metal, which is more durable and resistant to external conditions.

The lenses can be made of plastic, glass or glasses optics. The plastic ones, besides attracting dust, are more fragile and can accumulate static electricity, losing image quality.

Those made of glass and optics are more suitable. The glass one, despite the higher price, provides more durability, however, it is a little more fragile than the glasses' optics.

Viewing angle

Each model of magic eye has a certain angle of vision. Digital models usually offer a 110° view, so you can even see if someone is crouching down.

However, there are also models which offer a 180° view. If possible, opt for a model that allows you to have a good angle of vision, to see even hidden or crouched people. This way, you guarantee greater security for your home.

Door width

The most common door thickness size is between 30mm to 55mm. If this is the case, there is no point in buying a 65mm wide magic eye, for example.

Each model has a size, and it is necessary to measure your door to know which magic eye you should purchase.
