What are the features of the Magura MT4?
To be able to really step on the gas on downhill trails, you also have to be able to come to a stop at the right time. However, not every brake makes this possible, which is why we present the Magura brake system.
The Magura MT4 has a light, robust and unbreakable aluminium brake lever. It is available in 1-finger, 2-finger, 3-finger and 4-finger versions (so there is a suitable grip for everyone).
The wide lever of the MT4 is ergonomically comfortable on the fingers, even for smaller hands, and thus enables precise braking. The brake pads of the Magura MT4 can be easily adjusted via the magnetic brake levers.
During the trail you can rely 100% on the Magura MT4. The MT4 optimally combines dosage and braking power so that the MTB comes to an immediate stop when the lever is pressed.
Extreme heat or cold as well as other weather conditions have no effect on the braking characteristics of the Magura MT4.
What brake fluid should be used with the Magura MT4?
The Magura MT4 uses a brake system that is operated with mineral oil. Therefore, only mineral oil should be used, preferably the product of the respective manufacturer.
Otherwise incompatibilities with the seals may occur. Magura's own product is called "Magura Royal Blood".
This and other mineral oils have the advantage that they do not absorb moisture during the combustion process. This means that the boiling point does not decrease, unlike brakes with silicone elements.
Since the boiling point of brakes with mineral oil is continuously stagnant, it is theoretically not necessary to change them regularly, as they do not "age".
In practice, however, the brake fluids should be changed every 2-3 years, especially if there is a noticeable loss of pressure in the braking performance.

What alternatives are there to the Magura MT4 brake system?
The coaster brake is an already outdated model, but in its design and function it is a real classic. It is positioned inside the rear hub. In this case, the front wheel is not braked unless an independent additional brake has been fitted.
The coaster brake is referred to as an obsolete model that is no longer in use today, as its disadvantages should not be underestimated. It is very difficult to dose the braking force correctly - the reason for this is the differently developed fine motor skills in the hands and feet of humans.
If the chain comes off, it is no longer possible to apply the coaster brake. Whether emergency braking is more or less effective depends on the pedal position. Another major disadvantage is the risk of overheating. This can cause damage to the brakes.
The position in the secondary housing cannot be influenced by weather conditions, which is why coaster brakes remain robust and functional for decades and the arms are always relieved to some extent, as the braking force is delivered via the rider's legs.
Roller brake/drum brake
These are two brake models that do not differ greatly in design from the coaster brake.
They also have the same advantages as coaster brakes, but are not burdened by the same disadvantages because they can also be used without coaster.
The position during assembly is also within the scar. However, on rough terrain they are both, less effective.
This is a brake that dates back to the era of penny-farthings and is not suitable for a modern bicycle. It does not have a particularly high braking power.
It is also dependent on the conditions of the tyre, which results in high wear. The stamp brake was used to support coaster brakes on the rear wheel and is now an obsolete model.
Rim brakes are the most commonly used brakes. They are light in weight and therefore quite inexpensive. Rim brakes are now available in two versions, the conventional side-pull brake and the V-brake.
The side-pull brake is almost only found on racing bikes. The V-brake offers the greatest braking power next to the hydraulic disc brake. Relevant disc brake manufacturers are Magura, Shimano and Tektra.

Hydraulic disc brakes are braked by brake fluid, unlike mechanical disc brakes. The mineral oil is stored in the brake master cylinder, which is located inside the brake lever.
After long rides you should not touch the brake discs as they heat up very much.
If the driver now operates the brake lever, the brake fluid is released and enters the cylinder and the brake hose. The brake fluid presses on the two brake pistons, which in turn brake the brake disc from both sides.
Hydraulic brake discs are extremely reliable and have a low friction loss, which facilitates dosage and thus improves braking power.
During strenuous rides with a heavy load or on steep hills, the discs can become very hot. However, hydraulic disc brakes can only dissipate this heat with great difficulty.
Complex disc brakes therefore require regular maintenance and are on average significantly more expensive than e.g. mechanical disc brakes.
What distinguishes a Magura MT4 Flat Mount and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
The Magura Flat Mount caliper is a so-called fixed caliper, i.e. there are a minimum of two brake pistons in the brake piston which press on the brake disc. However, the Magura flat mount caliper is only compatible with a brake disc up to 160 mm.
The brake calipers manufactured for the Magura MT4 are made of a high-performance aluminium alloy, which are equipped with the magneticXchange brake piston.
Originally, flat mount saddles were designed exclusively for road bikes, but this has changed in recent years and now they are also compatible with mountain bikes.
To mount the flat mount, you only need an adapter for the front wheel, and it can simply be attached to the chain stay at the rear.
What distinguishes the Carbotecture housing of a Magura MT4 and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Carbotecture is a mixture of high-tech polymers and carbon. The material, created by the Magura manufacturers themselves, is converted into a unique plastic granulate in a complex process.
This plastic granulate decorates the brake handles of the Magura MT4 brake systems. The Carbotechture reinforced brake grips not only attract attention with their modern look, but also with their excellent properties.
These include, for example, their low weight of just 230 grams. Despite their weight, Carbotechture brake levers are: more efficient, more resistant to breakage, more elastic and have a higher tensile strength than ordinary, fibre-reinforced plastic or aluminium brake levers.

Everyone who is thinking about buying a bike with disc brakes is confronted with the question: "Which pad do you want to choose? In general, you can choose between three types of brake pads.
Organic brake pads
In this case, organic does not mean biodegradable, but describes the properties of the composition. Organic brake pads consist only to a small extent of metallic elements and more of fibreglass fibres and resin.
This composition allows for better heat insulation and a stronger braking effect. However, organic brake pads also wear out faster than sintered brake pads.
Sintered metal (metallic)
Sinter stands for metal, so to speak. Sinter is created by a process in which ceramic and metallic materials are pressed together under high pressure and heat. This compressed material is then called sintered metal.
The advantages of sintered metals are that they are significantly more heat resistant than organic brake pads and they have less wear. Sintered metal brake pads are well suited for downhill tracks where braking is required frequently.
The disadvantage of metal brake pads, however, is that they tend to squeal more often because metal meets metal. In addition, they generate more heat during braking, which is more difficult to dissipate.
Semi-metal brake pads are designed to combine the advantages of the other brake pads. Semi-metal brake pads consist of a high proportion of metal elements and a low proportion of fibreglass and resin.
This gives the semi-metal a longer life than its competitors and also gives it high heat resistance.
Brake disc material
Disc brakes can heat up to 200° Celsius, which the material has to withstand. Therefore, disc brakes are exclusively stamped from stainless steel, as stainless steel is best suited to cope with such high temperatures.
To be able to cool down the temperature even better, the core of the disc brake can be stamped out of aluminium. This variant is offered, for example, by the ICE technology from the competitor Shimano.
Diameter of the brake disc
The larger the brake disc, the better the heat dissipation, as there is more surface over which the heat can be distributed.
The diameter of the brake disc is very important. The larger the disc, the better!
Furthermore, the braking effect also increases with the size. The following sizes are suitable for the Magura MT4.

Brake disc mounting
There are two ways to mount the disc brake or connect it to the axles, either the classic 6-hole or the newer Center Lock variant.
The centre lock disc brake is securely attached to the rims by means of a locking ring and suitable tools.
The low-cost version, the 6-hole disc, is mounted by tightening 6 bolts. Both mounting systems are quite simple and the weight of the two variants is the same.
The only clear advantage would be the fact that you can mount 6-hole discs on Center Lock axles. However, centre lock is not possible on 6-hole axles.

How do I adjust the Magura MT4 brake lever on my MTB?
To adjust the MT4 brake lever, it must first be loosened with an Allen key. Normally brake levers are aligned relatively flat. This has the disadvantage that the wrist bends, which can lead to pain in the long run.
Brake levers that are aligned too low can also lead to pain. Therefore, make sure that the brake lever has an angle of inclination that does not put too much strain on the wrist.
It is also important to ensure that the brake lever is not too close to the brake lever, otherwise the full leverage cannot be utilised. Magura recommends a minimum distance of 20mm.
What maintenance tasks does the Magura MT4 require?
