What are make-up mirrors and what are their advantages?

Make-up mirrors are complementary accessories to cosmetic equipment (including lipsticks, mascara, pressed powder, eyeliner, brushes, etc.), and are specially designed to optimise the process when applying make-up to the face.

They come in different formats, sizes, designs, and materials, adapted to every style, need, and budget. There are mirrors for professional use and mirrors for domestic use; there are some versions with lights and others without; there are also models with different types of magnification and rotation systems.

The main advantage of this product is that it improves the image quality when applying make-up. There are also small, lightweight models that are very practical for transporting from one place to another, and extendable designs to flex the mirror and orient it to the position that is most comfortable for you.

Fixed, portable or folding make-up mirror - what should you look out for?

There are different types of make-up mirrors, including fixed, portable and folding mirrors. Here we will tell you about the particularities of each of them so that you can choose the one that suits you best according to your tastes and interests.

Fixed make-up mirror. As its name suggests, this type of mirror is fixed to the wall. It usually has the conventional rectangular format, and usually comes with bulb or LED lights around the frame to provide greater illumination and facilitate the make-up process.

There is also a variant of fixed extendable mirrors, which allow you to flex and adjust their position according to your comfort, and in some cases also rotate their glass. They are usually round or oval, and have magnification to see in greater detail the areas we want to make up.

Portable make-up mirror. These mirrors are the most commonly used, as they are very practical to carry in your handbag, purse or backpack. They are small and light (although the weight varies according to the materials) and their format is usually round or oval.

They usually come with a stand that folds flat for storage or transport. Some also come with lights, double-sided magnification (one side shows the normal image, the other side magnified 3x to 10x), and different adaptive rotation positions.

Folding mirrors. These mirrors have a triptych design, i.e. they have a central mirror and two side mirrors (like a board) that fold up, allowing a wider view of the face from different perspectives. They are also transportable (although this depends on their size), and are often fitted with LED lights.

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and rate different models of make-up mirrors

In this last section we will discuss what are the most important factors to consider when buying a makeup mirror, as it is an accessory with different varieties of use. This information will help you to choose the perfect model for you.

  • Size
  • Models
  • Materials
  • Light

As previously mentioned, make-up mirrors come in different sizes, adapted to each use and need. Here are the benefits and disadvantages of each size, so you can choose the one that's right for you.

Large. Large make-up mirrors are fixed wall mirrors, with a generally rectangular design, very similar to conventional bathroom mirrors. Their measurements can be 80 x 100 cm, 60 x 80 cm, 40 x 50 cm, etc., which makes them functional, but at the same time more difficult to move.

Medium mirrors. Medium mirrors are usually extendable wall mirrors (although there are also small ones), and rectangular folding mirrors. Their size usually exceeds 20 cm, so the image can be seen better, although they are not as comfortable to carry as the portable ones.

There is no one size better than another, but different sizes adapted to different needs. Therefore, you should choose the make-up mirror that is most comfortable and practical for you, depending on your daily (or occasional) use and your personal tastes and preferences.

Small. Small make-up mirrors are usually circular or oval in shape, and are specially designed to be carried in your handbag, purse or backpack. Their diameter is similar to that of a dessert plate (between 15 and 17 cm generally), so sometimes their measurements can be too small.

However, you should keep in mind that one of the two sides of the mirror is usually magnified, so the image will be magnified. If it is still too small, you can opt for a higher magnification (which can be 3x to 10x the normal image), or for a larger mirror.

The models of make-up mirrors are mainly characterised by their format and size, but also by their additional functions, which influence their usefulness. In the following we will tell you about the different variants of use of these accessories.

Lights. Most make-up mirrors come with lights to enhance the image, which can be either bulb or LED. It is advisable to choose the latter, as they will consume less electricity and will illuminate better and more naturally.

Another convenient option is to look for models of make-up mirrors that come with dimmable lights, which adjust to the preferred shade of the person using them. This allows us to change the lighting as often as we want, according to our needs.

Enhancement. Make-up mirrors usually have a face with a magnification between 3x and 10x times greater than ordinary mirrors, so that we can see the image of our face magnified. You should bear in mind that the higher the magnification, the closer you will have to get to the mirror (to take it into account with the height of fixed mirrors).

Support/grip. Portable make-up mirrors come with a folding, or fixed, base that rests on a flat material. Fixed mirrors, on the other hand, are usually attached to the wall with screws, although there are some models with suction cups to attach and detach from glass or tiles.

If you choose the latter, make sure that they are not too heavy, as their size may cause them to come off. You should also check that the suction cups are sufficiently resistant to withstand the weight and prevent them from falling off.

The materials of the make-up mirrors are also an important factor to take into account, as they can be exposed to knocks, scratches, humidity, etc., so it is essential that their components guarantee the resistance and durability of the product.

Metal. Most of the mirrors for makeup are made of stainless steel or aluminium, since they are the most resistant and durable materials. They can come in different variations, such as polished chrome, shiny metal, and matte finish, which makes them adaptable to different styles.

Although it is true that they are also more expensive, you can be sure that they will last for many more years than other raw materials, and you should also bear in mind that this material is heavier, so metal mirrors can be more uncomfortable to move than plastic ones.

Plastic. Plastic make-up mirrors are less common than metal ones, as they are more fragile. Before buying this accessory you should evaluate the use you will give it, and if it will be exposed to bumps and scratches (in case you carry it in your handbag or purse).

Ideally, use plastic make-up mirrors if you are going to carry them around, mainly because they are lighter. The important thing is that you are careful with them, as they may not survive the knocks and bumps like metal mirrors.

Wood. Rectangular fixed mirrors often come with ornamental wooden frames, where LED lights or bulbs are placed for extra illumination of the face (as well as being decorative). This material is not recommended for bathrooms, as the steam can swell it, but it is recommended for other rooms.

As we explained earlier, light is an important factor, as it determines the image we see in front of the mirror. And there are many mirrors that have built-in lights to help the user. That is why we must determine what type of light is the most suitable to achieve good lighting, and therefore a natural make-up.

Strong light. Try not to use light that is too strong or too intense, as it will cause you to put on too much make-up. In general we tend to use very bright lights, which end up being counterproductive to the naturalness of the make-up (unless we want an intense make-up).

Soft light. Dim lights will probably help us to regulate the amount and intensity of make-up more, but being too soft they may not give enough light. It's important to find a middle ground, which is why dimmable lights are a great option (as mentioned above).

Yellow or fluorescent light. These lights are not recommended for make-up, as they are too artificial and can distort the effect of the colours on the face, which will make us make-up in inadequate amounts and proportions.

Neutral light. Neutral lights are the most recommended, as they are not too strong, bright and intense, nor too soft and low. They also offer a more natural tone than the other types of light, although the choice will depend on your personal preferences.
