The Best Makita Cordless Screwdriver: Our Picks

Buying and evaluation criteria for Makita cordless screwdrivers

Makita cordless screwdrivers are available in a wide variety of models. The individual product variants can be distinguished according to the following criteria:

The following paragraphs explain what the individual criteria are.

In principle, the performance of a Makita cordless screwdriver can be recognised by its voltage. This is the voltage generated by the lithium-ion cells. A cell always generates 3.6 volts, which results in different power categories.

Voltage Description
3.6 volts Often referred to as a mini cordless screwdriver. Makita does not currently offer cordless screwdrivers in this voltage.
7.2 volts Somewhat more powerful and also capable of performing simpler drilling work. Here you will find Makita's light-weight and compact articulated screwdrivers
12 volts The 12 volt category actually corresponds to a nominal voltage of 10.8 volts. Here, the full Makita range of drill, impact and impact drill screwdrivers is already available. Due to the lower power, these tools are more suitable for do-it-yourselfers than for professionals.
14.4 volts A somewhat outdated category. Here Makita offers mainly specialised pistol screwdrivers with automatic switch-off. Intended more for industry than for private individuals.
18 Volt Powerful and reliable. With 18 volts, you are on the safe side if you want to make extensive use of the drilling function.

The most common sizes are 12 and 18 volts. This is also where you will find the largest range at Makita.

The available voltage influences the maximum torque. The higher the voltage, the more powerful your cordless screwdriver. The torque is measured in Newton metres and depends on the voltage of the battery.

Weaker cordless screwdrivers with up to 12 volts achieve a torque of around 30 Newton metres, which is perfectly adequate for drilling and screwing in softer materials. The more powerful 18-volt tools easily achieve torques of over 100 Newton metres, which means they can also cope well with concrete and metal.

Impact mechanism

Depending on the type of Makita cordless screwdriver you are interested in, it is worth considering a possible impact drill function. In this case, a mechanical impulse is transmitted to the drill head without springs. This allows and facilitates drilling in harder materials.

If you are looking for an all-round tool with as many application possibilities as possible, you should not do without the impact function.

One of the most important parts of your Makita cordless screwdriver is, of course, the battery itself. The number of lithium-ion cells it contains determines the voltage with which the cordless screwdriver works.

Makita batteries can be used universally with Makita devices with the same voltage.

Makita impresses here with its universal battery system. Almost all Makita battery-powered tools can be used with batteries of the same voltage. This means that you only have to buy one battery for several cordless tools. Given the comparatively high price of the batteries, this pays off very quickly.

Makita offers batteries with a capacity of 1.5 to 6 ampere hours. Thanks to the quick-charging system, even the largest batteries are recharged and ready for use within 45 minutes.

If you don't have a lot of tools and accessories at home, Makita sets are interesting. Here, the Makita cordless screwdriver is complemented by bits, drill bits and charger. All this is usually well organised in a practical Makita tool case.

For those who have a sufficient number of attachments but are new to Makita cordless tools, there are also sets in which the cordless screwdriver, two batteries and a quick-charging station are offered.

The sets are usually offered in Makita's own MAKPAC tool cases. These are available in various sizes and guarantee safe storage for your Makita cordless screwdriver and all accessories.

Special functions, battery capacity and high performance are of course also reflected in the weight. Makita tools are generally pleasantly light, but an impact drill with an extra handle and a 6 ampere-hour battery still weighs a lot. Therefore, you should consider whether and which functions make sense for you and how much battery time you can get by with in order to keep the weight as low as possible.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Makita cordless screwdriver

In the following, we would like to answer some questions and provide background information on Makita cordless screwdrivers.

What distinguishes Makita cordless screwdrivers from other manufacturers?

Makita is a Japanese company that has been selling power tools in Germany since 1977. Makita is one of the most popular brands in Germany and is used by professional craftsmen all over the country. But what makes tools from Makita a good choice?

Makita lithium-ion batteries are particularly efficient and long-lasting

The most common problems with cordless tools are usually related to the general durability and the battery itself. Rechargeable batteries quickly lose their maximum charging capacity or are heavy and clunky. This is where Makita scores with its sophisticated lithium-ion batteries, which are far more efficient and lighter than ordinary nickel-based batteries.

Not only are Makita batteries comparatively light and reliable, they can also be flexibly combined with each other. Hardly any other manufacturer can offer such a dynamic battery system. An 18-volt Makita battery can be used for all other 18-volt Makita tools without compatibility problems.

Makita's own battery cooling system only underlines these advantages. While conventional batteries are often too hot to charge directly after use, the Makita charger cools the batteries during charging. Using a computer chip, the Makita charger recognises the previous charging history of the battery and dynamically adjusts the charging process to maximise the service life of the battery.

Brushless motors are built into almost all Makita tools. The brushless technology reduces the wear of the motor considerably, which makes Makita tools particularly durable.

Thanks to XPT, Makita cordless screwdrivers also work in the rain

But Makita is not only convincing in terms of battery system and motor. Occupational safety and tool durability are also important. Makita's own 'Extreme Protection Technology' protects the inner workings from external influences such as rain or dust with an additional seal. This makes Makita tools particularly suitable for working outdoors.

If you register your Makita cordless screwdriver on the Makita website, you have the option of extending the warranty for the Makita cordless screwdriver to 3 years. The warranty for the rechargeable batteries is extended to 2 years.

What types of cordless screwdrivers does Makita offer?

The product range of Makita cordless screwdrivers can be classified according to the battery voltage.

Cordless screwdriver type Description
Makita 7.2 volt cordless screwdriver Particularly light and small. Well suited for confined spaces.
Makita 12 volt cordless screwdriver Versatile and comparatively light and cheap. Suitable for lighter drilling work.
Makita 14.4 volt cordless screwdriver Niche category for industry, Specialised gun screwdrivers
Makita 18 volt cordless screwdriver All-rounder. Powerful and versatile. The choice for professional craftsmen

Enclosed we want to give you a better overview of the individual categories. To do this, we examine the areas of application as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the respective categories:

Makita 7.2 Volt cordless screwdriver

Makita 7.2 Volt cordless screwdriver

The lightweight from Makita. Here you will find bendable cordless screwdrivers that are ideal for lighter drilling and screwing work. The tools in this category usually weigh far less than one kilogram and are therefore particularly light in the hand. You will also find impact screw functions here.

In principle, the 7.2 volt folding Makita cordless screwdrivers are particularly suitable for confined spaces where a larger cordless screwdriver would have space problems. Ideal for fastening and loosening screws in confined spaces, but less suitable for drilling or impact drilling work.

Makita 12 Volt cordless screwdriver

Makita 12 Volt cordless screwdriver

The 12 volt category at Makita is becoming more and more powerful. Although professionals and craftsmen should still go for 18-volt devices, casual do-it-yourselfers can definitely consider a 12-volt cordless screwdriver. From drill screwdriver to impact drill, the complete range is already offered here.

Suitable for softer materials, the low voltage of the 12-volt screwdriver can cause problems with concrete and similar materials. However, if you know exactly what you are looking for, you will find what you are looking for here.

Makita 14.4 Volt cordless screwdriver

Makita 14.4 Volt cordless screwdriver

Once a popular category, the 14.4 volt screwdriver is rarely used nowadays. As 12-volt cordless screwdrivers are becoming more and more powerful and 18-volt screwdrivers are becoming lighter and more affordable, 14.4 volt cordless screwdrivers are mainly used in niches in industry.

Accordingly, Makita only offers highly specialised pistols and angle screwdrivers here. For someone looking for an all-purpose tool, this is rather uninteresting.

Makita 18 Volt cordless screwdriver

Makita 18 Volt cordless screwdriver

The main focus of the Makita power tool range. Here you will find every cordless screwdriver version a professional could wish for. For the particularly strong machines, an additional handle is often attached to ensure safe handling.

If you are looking for an all-purpose tool for a wide range of applications, we recommend a Makita 18 volt cordless impact drill.

What accessories are available for Makita cordless screwdrivers?

Whether additional batteries, tool cases or bit sets, Makita offers a wide range of accessories for your Makita cordless screwdriver.

  • Screw & Fastener Sets: If you are looking for bits and drill bits, you might be interested in the Makita screw & fastener sets. These are available in many variations from smaller supplementary packs to complete bit & drill head sets in the large Makita tool box.
  • Bags and tool holders: Makita offers a variety of bags and tool holders. If you don't want to bend down all the time for your cordless screwdriver or small tools like screws, you'll find what you're looking for here. Thanks to practical belt holders and pouches, everything can be stowed safely and securely on the person.
  • Tool cases: Makita's own MAKPAC's offer an excellent solution if you are looking for a storage system for your tools and accessories. They come in different sizes, so you can be sure that there is room for all your accessories.
  • Battery accessories: In addition to replacement batteries, you'll also find chargers and power packs, as well as protective battery covers in this section.

At what prices are Makita cordless screwdrivers sold?

Makita as a brand stands above all for quality. Of course, this quality also has its price, so Makita power tools are not always the cheapest choice. The prices vary greatly depending on the voltage and any accessories.

A solid 12-volt Makita cordless screwdriver can often be purchased for less than 100 euros, while a corresponding 18-volt Makita cordless screwdriver can cost 200 euros or more.

What are the alternatives to Makita cordless screwdrivers?

Even though Makita is one of the world's leading brands when it comes to cordless screwdrivers, there are other manufacturers who produce power tools of equal quality. Often, the tools of two first-class manufacturers differ only in minor details. Here we list some brands that we think are comparable to Makita in terms of quality and popularity.

  • Hilti: A Hilti machine is often the pride of every craftsman. Hardly any other brand has a similar willingness to recommend it. Thanks to its high reputation in craftsmen's circles and qualitatively convincing power tools, Hilti has a firm place among the best power tool manufacturers. The only disadvantage is that you will probably not find the Hilti brand in DIY stores, as it is only sold in special Hilti stores, in the B2B sector or online.
  • Bosch: Bosch is probably the best-known brand among non-tradesmen. With an extremely broad and diverse range, Bosch has the right tool for every type of user. For the more professional projects, we definitely recommend the blue "Bosch Professional" range instead of the better-known green tools.
  • Metabo: One of the oldest German power tool manufacturers. Since 1920, Metabo has stood for outstanding quality and holds over 700 patents and utility models.
  • Festool: For those who see their field of application primarily in woodwork, the manufacturer Festool is perhaps the closest. This German brand has concentrated on woodworking machines since 1925 and has not lost its focus since then.

Makita offers tools of the highest quality, but the place at the top is hard-fought. You will find cordless screwdrivers of comparable quality from the manufacturers listed above. We would recommend sticking with one manufacturer to ensure battery compatibility.

Are Makita cordless screwdrivers also available in other colours?

If you have already familiarised yourself with the Makita brand, you will have noticed that there are more than just the typical turquoise tools. Similar to Bosch, Makita has a colour-coded DIY series. Makita also offers "special edition" versions of their cordless screwdrivers that come in different colours.

  • Red: Under the name Makita Maktec, Makita sells older product lines here as do-it-yourself machines for significantly lower prices.
  • Black: As a special edition for the 40th anniversary, the Makita DDF482RFEB, among others, is offered in black.
  • Pink: The Makita HP331DSAP1 is also offered in pink as a special edition.
  • White: Another special edition. The Makita DHP456RYW1 is offered as a black & white version in a set case.
