The mangosteen fruit has been appreciated in its native Thailand for many years for its high vitamin content and its natural healing powers. In Europe, too, it now enriches the diet of many people and is becoming increasingly popular because of its pleasant taste. However, there are not many clear results from scientific studies on the effects of mangosteen products.

In our large mangosteen test 2021 we present various mangosteen products. We have compared juices, capsules and powders containing mangosteen with each other and clearly presented the advantages and disadvantages as well as the areas of application of the different products. We have also summarised the content of the most important studies on the topic of mangosteen.




The most important

  • The mangosteen fruit is also called mangosteen, mangostan or mangosteen. In its Asian homeland, it is also called the "queen of fruits" because of its numerous positive properties.
  • The fruit of the mangosteen tree is rich in valuable ingredients, such as cell-protecting antioxidants. It is said to have many positive effects on digestion, skin and general well-being.
  • To date, there are only a few scientific studies on the effects of the mangosteen fruit on the human body. Although many effects are repeatedly confirmed by individuals, they could not always be proven under laboratory conditions.

When buying mangosteen, you can look at various aspects, such as:

By making the right choice for you, you can save money and also ensure that you don't give your body anything it doesn't need. Therefore, always look for high quality and, if necessary, ask to see the manufacturer's certificates.

Dosage form

If you are thinking about taking mangosteen, you should think about which dosage form is best for you. Mangosteen products are now available in many different forms, the most common being

  • Mangosteen juice
  • Mangosteen capsules
  • Mangosteen tea
  • Mangosteen puree

The question of which form is right for you depends on both your personal preferences and the goal you have in mind when consuming mangosteen.

Individual types of mangosteen products differ in the concentration of ingredients as well as in effect and price. You can ask yourself the following questions to find the most suitable dosage form for you:

  • Would I prefer to take the mangosteen product in solid or liquid form?
  • How important is it to me that the product is easy to dose?
  • How important is it to me that the product has a long shelf life?
  • Is it important to me that the product is easy to take and transport?

The dosage therefore depends on the dosage form. It also determines how you can take the active ingredient.

Aim of use

If you are thinking about buying mangosteen products, you should consider in advance what goal you want to achieve with the application.

Depending on your specific requirements, it makes sense to take different parts of the mangosteen. In the following, we have briefly summarised which parts of the fruit can help with which problems:

Peel preparation of teas, supports stomach problems or bladder diseases
Flesh treatment of skin diseases, stomach pain

However, it is not absolutely necessary to treat specific diseases or infections with mangosteen products.

As the mangosteen is rich in high-quality natural vitamins and nutrients, many people report that they also develop a better general well-being and feel healthier overall as a result of its consumption.

Additives

In most cases, mangosteen products have other ingredients added to them. Vegans should make sure that the mangosteen capsules they take are free of animal ingredients such as gelatin. In most cases, all additives are listed on the product packaging.

It is also important for allergy sufferers to look carefully at the additives. Mangosteen capsules in particular may contain additives that can trigger various allergic reactions.

In particular, mangosteen capsules as well as various mangosteen juices may contain lactose or gluten and should therefore be avoided by people who are allergic to these substances.

Dosage

Dosage is also a crucial factor when choosing a mangosteen product. There are both high-dose food supplements with mangosteen content and diluted forms of application.

We have briefly summarised the average dosage of the different product types below:

If you are looking for a particularly unproblematic way to take high-dose mangosteen, you should take a closer look at mangosteen capsules. These are pre-dosed and can therefore be taken regularly even in stressful everyday life without major problems.

In order to inform you comprehensively about the effectiveness of mangosteen and to give you an understanding of the current state of science, we have summarised all the important information in the following sections.

What is mangosteen and how does it work?

The mangosteen is the fruit of the tree of the same name, which bears the botanical name "garcinia mangostanaals".

It grows in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Brazil. It can reach the size of a medium-sized potato, but most commercially available fruits are more the size of a lychee.

It is rich in various antioxidants such as:

  • Xanthones
  • Polyphenols
  • Tannins
  • Catechins

These substances are believed to have the ability to render various viruses, bacteria and fungi harmless in the body. Therefore, mangosteen is often used to treat various inflammations.

Furthermore, mangosteen contains many different minerals, vitamins and trace elements that have a positive effect on the physical condition and metabolism.

There are various reports from individuals who report different positive effects of mangosteen on the state of health. We have briefly listed the most frequently mentioned ones here:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • Improvement of the immune system
  • Supports digestion
  • Improves the appearance of the skin

Some scientists have also studied this active ingredient.

There have been relatively few scientific studies on the effects of mangosteen on the human body.

When and for whom is it useful to take mangosteen?

Mangosteen fruits are particularly rich in various vitamins and minerals. Therefore, taking mangosteen makes sense for everyone who wants to supplement their diet with these substances.

Mangosteen also has a positive effect on digestion due to the fibre it contains and is therefore a good choice for people who have problems in this area.

What parts of the mangosteen plant are used?

The mangosteen fruit can be processed almost completely. Both its peel and the pulp can be used to make juice, tea or puree.

What does the mangosteen taste like?

Many people find the taste of the mangosteen very pleasant.

While the skin of the fruit is very tough and has a bitter taste, the flesh has an acidic taste that is somewhere between that of grapes, grapefruit, pineapple and peach. Pineapple and peach.

What types of mangosteen products are there?

Foods made from or containing the mangosteen come in various forms. We have briefly summarised the most common mangosteen products available on the market and their advantages and disadvantages below:

Mangosteen juice

Mangosteen juice is made from the whole fruit and the rind.

Advantages
  • easy to take
  • pleasant taste
  • also suitable for children and people with swallowing problems
Disadvantages
  • frequently added additives
  • not high doses

Mangosteen juice is well suited to cover the daily need for various vitamins.

The juice is very easy to take and tastes good. If you have problems swallowing tablets, this is a great alternative.

Mangosteen capsules

Mangosteen capsules are a good way to take highly concentrated mangosteen extract.

Advantages
  • already pre-dosed
  • high purity of the ingredients used
Disadvantages
  • often not suitable for vegans
  • sometimes difficult to swallow

If you live a vegan lifestyle, pay special attention to the ingredients of such capsules. Animal ingredients such as gelatin are often used as binders.

Mangosteen tea

Only the rind of the fruit is used in the production of mangosteen tea. Such a tea is said to have positive effects for the metabolism and for stomach and intestinal problems.

  • usually free of additives
Disadvantages
  • in loose form somewhat complicated preparation
  • not high doses

Since mangosteen tea is usually supplied in loose form, you need either a tea infuser or tea bags that you can fill yourself.

What is the difference between mangosteen juice and ordinary mangosteen juice?

You can find both mangosteen juice and other juices that contain mangosteen in the shops. We have briefly described the advantages and disadvantages of these two forms of juice below:

Mixed mangosteen juice

Mixed juices contain components of the mangosteen fruit as well as fruit essences from other types of fruit such as pomegranate or kiwi.

  • long shelf life
Disadvantages
  • not suitable for external use
  • some artificial ingredients or sugar

If you choose mixed juices, you can alternate different flavours. You can also choose your favourite flavour. However, pay close attention to the list of ingredients so that you do not choose a product with artificial additives or sugar.

Pure Mangosteen Juice / Direct Juice

Pure mangosteen juice is also called direct juice and is very versatile.

  • is closest to eating the natural fruit
  • can also be used topically
Disadvantages
  • smaller product selection
  • less long shelf life

Pure mangosteen juice is also suitable for spreading on blemishes such as pimples and blackheads. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties help improve the appearance of the skin.

How should mangosteen be dosed?

The recommended dosage of mangosteen products is highly dependent on the dosage form. The recommended daily dosage for the most popular forms of mangosteen products is briefly summarised below:

Mangosteen juice 3 times 30 ml daily

Be careful not to exceed the recommended daily dose to avoid intolerance.

What side effects can mangosteen have?

As with almost all other foods, the mangosteen fruit itself or individual components of the plant may be intolerant. It is also possible that the ingredients of the mangosteen inhibit or block the effect of various medicines.

If you are taking regular medication, it is best to talk to your doctor about whether there are any known interactions with mangosteen.

In general, mangosteen is very well tolerated, so in most cases you should not expect any undesirable side effects.

Can I take mangosteen during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

There have been no studies on the effects of mangosteen on unborn babies and infants. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should therefore refrain from consuming it for safety reasons.

If you do not want to take mangosteen products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking it.

Is mangosteen suitable for weight loss?

In the past, mangosteen was repeatedly promoted as a means for effective weight loss.

Due to the fructose, mangosteen is only suitable for weight loss to a limited extent

There is no doubt that the mangosteen has numerous positive properties that can be helpful in losing weight. For example, mangosteen juice can serve to stimulate the body's metabolism and thus prevent cravings.

On the other hand, you should bear in mind that mangosteen is a so-called sweet fruit that always contains certain amounts of fructose due to its natural properties. This can be a hindrance to losing weight due to its calorie density.

There are currently no studies that definitively confirm a weight-reducing effect of the mangosteen fruit. However, a positive effect was observed in insulin-resistant diabetes patients who regularly consumed mangosteen juice over a longer period of time(1).

Based on these findings, a weight-reducing effect is certainly conceivable, but could not be conclusively determined in verifying studies (2, 3)

Has the effect of mangosteen been scientifically proven?

There are various studies that have looked at the effects of mangosteen in the human body.

In principle, almost all natural fruits are a sensible and valuable addition to your diet.

However, whether mangosteen products actually have healing powers is disputed in scientific circles.

The mangosteen fruit is rich in so-called xanthones. These secondary plant compounds are thought to have positive anti-inflammatory properties(4, 5, 6).

Many suspected effects of the mangosteen have not yet been conclusively researched

It is also suspected that xanthones may be able to block tumour cells in the body(7, 8). However, these studies were carried out with small numbers of participants and can therefore not be regarded as reliable proof of the tumour-inhibiting effect of xanthones.

Several studies indicated that the evidence so far is not sufficient to assume such an effect of xanthones(9).

The anti-inflammatory properties of the mangosteen fruit could also not be clearly demonstrated under laboratory conditions(10).

However, it is relatively certain that the regular intake of mangosteen can contribute to an improvement of the immune system(11). An effect on the symptoms of exhaustion after intensive physical activity, however, could not be proven(12).

Does mangosteen help against acne and pimples?

Under certain conditions, mangosteen can have a healing and anti-inflammatory effect on skin blemishes and pimples.

The presumed anti-inflammatory effect of the xanthones and polyphenols contained in the fruit can have a positive effect on inflamed skin areas and pimples. However, this has not yet been scientifically confirmed(13, 14).

However, there are no known negative effects of mangosteen treatment on the appearance of pimples or acne. You can therefore consider treating your skin with mangosteen on a trial basis and observe whether you experience a positive effect or not.

What are the alternatives to mangosteen?

The mangosteen fruit is particularly valued for its antioxidant properties and high vitamin content. However, there are also some fruits that have similar properties to mangosteen. If you want to switch to an alternative, you should take a closer look at products that contain the following fruits:

  • Pomegranate
  • Goji berries
  • Blueberries
  • Acerola
  • Açai berries

Compare the alternatives carefully. Your personal requirements and needs will determine whether you prefer an alternative to mangosteen. Certainly, taste and smell play an important role, as well as the strength of the promising effect.
