What is matte lipstick?

It's a cosmetic that after being applied, takes on a dull, matte appearance. They have been around for many years, but today more than ever they are a trend. Their popularity lies in their intense colours that can create a dramatic, glamorous or elegant look, depending on your personal style.

In addition, matte lipsticks are long-lasting because they have low emollient ingredients, which means they adhere more easily to the skin. They have great coverage, which can vary from brand to brand, but generally you only need to apply one coat to get an even, even colour.

Matte lipstick stick or liquid - what should you look out for?

There are two presentations of matte lipstick. We recommend that you give them both a try, as they are equally necessary. However, we would like to point out their differences, as it all depends on your personal taste.

Matte lipstick stick. It is characterised by having a creamy but solid consistency, making it easy to apply as it is the same as traditional lipstick. It can also be combined with an eyeliner, which has the same consistency but will help you to frame your lips and make them the protagonist.

Liquid matte lipstick. They have great coverage and are easy to apply as well. However, you'll need to have an excellent pulse when lining because it dries very quickly, it's also more susceptible to smudging if you're not skilled enough to use it. Available in more shades and are a little more moisturising.

How to apply matte lipstick?

This cosmetic is characterised by its fast drying time, so you will need to apply it with confidence and if you don't have a good hand you will need to practice a little. Fill in the inside and then perfect the edges taking care of a clean result, especially if you choose a liquid presentation. The big disadvantage of these is that they are very dry and dehydrate the lips.

"It is very important to exfoliate and moisturise them before use. If you have dry skin and especially on your lips, you should know that this product is not the best for you."

How to remove matte lipstick?

As matte lipsticks are long-lasting, they are able to withstand intact despite eating, drinking, talking, kissing, etc. This is very beneficial, but also creates some difficulty when removing make-up compared to a traditional lipstick version.

The recommendation is to use a specialised lip make-up remover or a two-phase make-up remover, leave it on for a few minutes and gently remove it with a cotton pad, while massaging it in. If you don't have these products, as an emergency measure you can apply lip balm or gloss, which will also remove the pigment.

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and rate different matte lipstick models

To stay one step ahead, it's important to know the product as a whole. For that, we have highlighted the most relevant factors that will help you identify the right matte lipsticks for your skin, face, etc. Don't miss out!

  • Skin colour
  • Shades
  • Texture
  • Lip thickness

Skin colour

Matte lipsticks can be chosen based on many factors. One of the most important is skin tone and undertone. They are the most relevant and will determine a successful look, or totally disastrous. If you don't know what your skin tone is, pay attention.

Of course. It is recommended to create a balance between lipstick and blush for a natural look. The most flattering colours are sweet colours such as carmine, pink and reddish undertones. Avoid cool tones that will give you a dying or sickly look. Prefer intense colours that create contrast.

Medium. Also known as "wheat" skin. This is based on yellow pigmentation and can affect its colour depending on exposure to the sun. Colours such as burgundy, coral, orange, red and cool colours look great. It is recommended to combine with a more intense eye make-up to highlight your look.

Dark. Dark skins tend to be more oily and therefore, matte lipstick is not the best option. If you still venture to try it and want to wear it with confidence and comfort, it is recommended to avoid dark and cold shades. Prefer creamy, moisturising textures and intense colours that generate contrast such as pink or red.

Logically, the shades of matte lipstick will depend on the colour palette offered by the brand. However, there is a whole science behind choosing based on your skin tone, season of the year, combination with your clothes and whether it is for day or night. Here are the references:

Nude. It stands out for being a very similar colour to the skin and neutral appearance. They are recommended for when you have a very striking eye make-up and you don't want to overload the appearance of your face. There is a nude colour for every skin type and they are also perfect for outlining without being too noticeable.

Sweet. Sweet tones are a favourite for daytime make-up. You can use deep pink or pale pink colours to achieve your perfect outfit. It is recommended to create contrast with dark hair or to subtly highlight it in an elegant way.

Bold/cool. Favoured for evening wear, although it depends on your personality. Highlights include reddish tones and dramatic shades that are very fashionable such as black, blue or purple. They look good on any skin type and are recommended for use with a more subtle eye make-up to give full attention to the impactful lips.

Choosing the right matte lipstick texture will make all the difference to your lip or skin type. Remember that all lipsticks are susceptible to dehydration, chapping and dryness. However, the right texture can reduce the stiff feeling on your lips. And give you more confidence when smiling or speaking.

Solid. Usually found in stick or pencil form. They are a little more difficult to spread and have less coverage. They are recommended for people with oily skin or who do not have problems with dry lips, otherwise, bits of hanging skin and cracks will ruin your appearance.

Creamy. These are characterised by the fact that they are available in a liquid version. Their coverage is higher and as they are watery in consistency they offer more moisturising power. However, their duration is reduced depending on the brand. They are recommended for experts in matte lipstick application, for eyeliner or for use for a shorter time.

Lip thickness

As we've already mentioned, matte lipstick is a complement to your facial build, hair, clothes, occasion, among others. Therefore, its use is variable and subjective to your preferences. In general, the opaque finish of this product does not create volume, but it does create intensity. Pay attention to our recommendations.

Thick. They are the perfect candidates for matte lipstick. If you want to highlight them, prefer bright colours and you can use an eyeliner. Some people feel uncomfortable and prefer to hide them; in this case it is better not to use eyeliner and prefer colours similar to your skin tone, such as nude or warm colours.

Thin lips: Who said that thin lips are not suitable for a matte lipstick? In this case, matte lipstick is recommended as an eyeliner, either in pencil or liquid version. Make sure to contour the lips outside the lip line to create the illusion of more volume.
