What is MCT oil?

MCT oil is a medium-chain triglyceride, also known as "medium chain triglyceride". These are also considered saturated fatty acids and are differentiated by their number of carbon atoms. The following table shows an overview of the medium-chain triglycerides.

Accordingly, lauric acid has 12 carbon atoms and does not have a double bond. The properties of lauric acid are described as follows (C12:0).

Some include lauric acid (C12:0) among the medium-chain fatty acids, but it takes the body longer to absorb it and is therefore considered more of a long-chain fatty acid. How is MCT oil produced?

MCT oil is extracted from coconut or palm oil. It is not a natural or organic product. The fatty acids are split off from the glycerol by enzymes from genetically modified microorganisms and distilled under vacuum so that the medium-chain triglycerides can be isolated as the end product.

Through this process, an odourless and tasteless oil can be obtained that has a high content of MCT oil.

How does MCT oil work?

Antibacterial and antiviral

MCT oil is known for its antibacterial and antiviral effects and can therefore be used to fight fungal diseases. Caprylic acid in particular is said to have antifungal effects.

Carpic acid as well as lauric acid can fight viruses and pathogens in the body and thus alleviate a herpes infection in the body, for example.

Improves mood and energy

With the help of MCT oil, mood and energy metabolism can be positively influenced. The brain in particular needs fatty acids for performance and concentration. Only when the brain has sufficient fatty acids can it ensure smooth functioning.

Cognitive processes in particular, including memory and the ability to concentrate, depend on the brain being properly supplied with vital substances. What are the alternatives to MCT oil?

In itself, coconut oil is a popular alternative oil among health-conscious people. It has a high content of lauric acid, but there is little of the medium-chain fatty acids such as caprylic acid, capric acid. Caproic acid is only present in very small amounts. The lauric acid in coconut oil is not metabolised as quickly as genuine MCT oil, which is suitable for fast energy production. In coconut oil, the proportion of lauric acid is more than 50 %.

This has an antimicrobial effect and has a positive influence on intestinal health. In conventional MCT oils, a proportion of the cheaper and less effective lauric acid is often added, so it is important to check the respective MCT oil composition before buying.

Coconut oil is extracted from the fruit of the coconut palm, namely the coconuts. In the body, the medium-chain fatty acids are metabolised quickly and increase the energy consumption in the body. It can also be used to support a low-carb diet. For example, it is used as an appetite suppressant and is also low in calories compared to other oils.

Unfortunately, coconut oil used for frying contains only few vitamins and minerals such as calcium and vitamin E. In comparison, the same amount of butter contains more calcium, magnesium, iron and carotenoids.

Palm oil is made from the fruit of the oil palm. Here you can find the advantages and disadvantages of palm oil. Compared to rapeseed, sunflower or soybean oil, palm oil requires less cultivation area than alternative types of oil and is therefore a crop with a higher yield.

Palm oil is often used as an ingredient in cosmetics and food. It protects against free radicals and cares for dry skin. It is also used to improve the taste of food, for example in chocolate, so that it melts particularly well in the mouth.

Caproic acid (C6)

Caproic acid is quickly metabolised in the body and converted into ketone bodies. The taste is a disadvantage. It is described as foul. Caproic acid can also cause stomach and digestive problems.

Caprylic acid (C8)

Caprylic acid is metabolised very quickly in the body and serves as fuel for the cells. This fatty acid is considered the most valuable, as it is especially valued for its antimicrobial effect and shows stronger effects than lauric acid.

Capric acid (C10)

Capric acid is absorbed in the body somewhat more slowly than caprylic acid, yet it is metabolised without activity from the liver and is an important source of energy for health-conscious people.

Lauric acid (C12)

As already mentioned above, coconut oil contains lauric acid, which also makes up the largest proportion of fatty acids in coconut oil. Lauric acid has to be metabolised differently in the body than the rest of the MCT oils, which is why it is not considered a medium-chain fatty acid despite the classification.

When choosing MCT oil, care should be taken to ensure a high proportion of caprylic and capinic acid, where both make up at least 90 per cent, for a good effect in the body.

Without additives

When buying MCT oil, it is important that it is free from other additives and that it is 100% pure oil. The oil should therefore be free of artificial additives, colourings, stabilisers or flavourings, gluten-free, lactose-free, GMO-free and vegan in order to positively support a healthy diet or a selected diet with high-quality ingredients.

Dosage form

The tasteless and odourless MCT oil is offered in different dosage forms:

All can serve as a food supplement. The powder is easier to stir into mueslis and drinks than the oil. MCT oil is particularly suitable for salads or the typical Bulletproof Coffee.
