The Best Measuring Spoon: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a measuring spoon
What is a measuring spoon and what do I use it for?
Foods for which a measuring spoon is suitable include baking powder, vanilla sugar, protein powder, coffee and spices such as salt, pepper or herbs. You can also easily add small amounts of liquid such as water, milk, oil or alcohol by the spoonful.
Of course, the foods or liquids just mentioned can also be measured with a scale or measuring cup. However, this is often problematic with small quantities if the scale has a minimum weight or the scale on the measuring cup is not so finely graduated. In addition, you don't have to get out the scales or dirty a measuring cup for minimal portions.
How much do measuring spoons cost?
The average price on the internet for a measuring spoon set with four to six spoons is 5-10 euros. Often, measuring cups with somewhat larger fill quantities are offered in addition to the measuring spoon set. The price of both together is around 15-25 euros.
|Measuring spoons Plastic||3 - 10 euros|
|Measuring spoons Stainless steel||5 - 15 euros|
|Measuring spoon set||13 - 25 euros|
Measuring cups are not explained further on this page, however, because for larger quantities, a scale or a normal measuring cup comes into question again.
What sizes of measuring spoon sets are there?
The spoons are often attached to each other by a ring to form a handy set, but they can also be removed and used separately. Thanks to the ring, the portioning spoons can also be hung up in a similar way to a key ring.
How many grams or millilitres does a measuring spoon hold?
The quantities are often marked on the spoons not only in millilitres or grams, but also in teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (Tbsp). The most common capacities of spoons are shown in the following table:
|quantity (grams or millilitres)||teaspoon or tablespoon|
|0.63||≙ ⅛ TL|
|1||≙ ⅕ TL|
|1.25||≙ ¼ TL|
|2.5||≙ ½ TL|
|3.75||≙ ¼ EL|
|5||≙ 1 TLL|
|7.5||≙ ½ EL|
|15||≙ 1 EL|
Decision: What types of measuring spoons are there and which one is right for you?
Basically, you can distinguish between two types of measuring spoons:
- Plastic measuring spoons
- Measuring spoons made of stainless steel
For each type, the material of the measuring spoon is different, which results in individual advantages and disadvantages. Which measuring spoon is right for you depends above all on your individual preferences and requirements for the measuring spoon.
For example, the desired appearance and durability are decisive factors when buying a measuring spoon. To support you in your decision and to find the best measuring spoon for you, we present the different types of measuring spoons in more detail in the following section and list the advantages and disadvantages clearly.
How does a plastic measuring spoon work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Measuring spoons made of plastic are very robust and usually do not get damaged if they are accidentally dropped. They cannot be scratched as much as measuring spoons made of stainless steel and therefore retain their appearance virtually unchanged over the entire period of use.
The measuring spoons can be treated like normal cutlery without any problems and are therefore usually dishwasher safe. Cleaning by hand is also possible and can be done quite easily.
Plastic measuring spoons have another decisive advantage: they are very light compared to stainless steel measuring spoons and can therefore be used without any problems. However, the appearance of plastic spoons is not as high quality as that of stainless steel measuring spoons.
In addition, plastic usually contains plasticisers and other substances that are harmful to health. If they are released by certain liquids or foods, they can seriously harm your body. That's why you should always pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions for use and cleaning when using plastic spoons.
How does a stainless steel measuring spoon work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Measuring spoons made of stainless steel are also very robust and therefore usually cannot break. Due to the particularly high-quality material, stainless steel measuring spoons therefore last a particularly long time and only wear out very slowly - if at all.
They are easy to clean and can also be put in the dishwasher without any problems. Measuring spoons made of stainless steel impress with their high-quality look and elegant design and are therefore also very popular among professional chefs or in offices, for example for measuring coffee powder.
Stainless steel is usually heavier than plastic. However, the difference in weight should not be very noticeable, as it is not very great. The visual appearance and durability of the product are therefore more important than the weight of the measuring spoon.
One problem that does not occur with plastic measuring spoons is that stainless steel measuring spoons can scratch or even rust. However, this only happens with inferior quality. Therefore, when buying, you should make sure that the material is rustproof and as scratch-resistant as possible.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate measuring spoons
In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate measuring spoons. This will help you decide whether a certain product is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:
In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify the characteristics.
The design of measuring spoons is mainly influenced by the material and the colour. The shape is, of course, similar to that of a spoon and is almost identical for each product, except for subtleties. The measuring spoons are offered either in stainless steel or in plastic.
The stainless steel version is always silver and the plastic spoons often come in brightly coloured versions. The design is, of course, a matter of taste. For some buyers, the plain stainless steel spoons look more noble and of higher quality, but some buyers also prefer colourful plastic spoons that might not look so boring and bring life into the kitchen.
In terms of features, only the number of measuring spoons and their respective capacity and the storage ring that holds the spoons together play a role. Since the product is very simple, there is not too much to consider here, as with the other purchase criteria.
You can also buy measuring spoons individually, but it is usually common to buy a set of several spoons directly. There are often four, five or six spoons in a set. Sometimes a measuring ruler or other accessories such as a small whisk are also included in addition to the actual measuring spoons.
The common sizes for measuring spoons have already been described in the guide. In general, however, you should make sure that the spoons also have the capacities stated there, which are usually based on the German measurements of tea spoons and tablespoons and are not sold in exotic or foreign measuring sizes.
The last feature is the storage ring, which is included in almost all sets. This ring allows the individual measuring spoons to be attached to each other in a similar way to a bunch of keys. This is very advantageous because it allows you to store all the spoons together.
For use, however, the spoons should also be able to be separated and used independently of each other.
Measuring spoons are usually sold in sets of several spoons in common sizes. The sizes correspond to the quantities that are often needed in recipes.
As far as cleaning is concerned, it can only be mentioned that almost all measuring spoons are dishwasher safe and therefore very easy to clean. Simply leave the cleaning to the dishwasher or wash the measuring spoons quickly by hand with warm water and washing-up liquid.
For this reason, the materials generally have no influence on cleaning and you should only make sure that the product is really dishwasher safe.
Facts worth knowing about measuring spoons
What are level or heaped measuring spoons?
The amount indicated on the spoon refers to a level measuring spoon. Smoothed means that the spoon is smoothed out horizontally with a knife so that the portion does not protrude over the edge.
A heaped measuring spoon indicates the amount of an ingredient that can just be accommodated on the spoon. The spoon is not only filled to the brim, but the spoon is dipped into the ingredient and lifted out again horizontally so that a mountain is formed.
Logically, a heaped measuring spoon is only possible for solid foods - especially in powder form, for example flour - and not for liquids.
