The Best Meditation Mat: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a meditation mat

What is special about meditation mats?

Meditation mats insulate very well from the floor. They prevent moisture and cold from entering the mat. They also warm and relax the muscles. Knees, legs and ankles do not hurt or suffer from pressure points even after prolonged meditation.

Who are meditation mats suitable for?

You should buy a meditation mat if you often meditate outdoors or on uncomfortable ground. In spring and summer, the ground is often damp and cold.

You can even meditate outside in the morning or evening if you dress warmly enough. It also protects you from small animals or rocks. The meditation mat is the perfect surface for meditating outdoors. It provides you with a good base to level out any ground conditions. With a meditation mat, therefore, you don't have to worry about the condition of the floor. It is the perfect complement to a meditation cushion or meditation bench.

How much does a meditation mat cost?

The price depends on the material and individual production wishes (pattern, colour, size). You can get cheap standard mats for as little as 30 euros. Good mats that also insulate reliably are available for around 50 euros. For high-quality material or custom-made mats, you have to calculate from 100 euros upwards.

Did you know that meditation cannot only be practised while sitting? The classic way to meditate is to sit cross-legged, but you can also meditate while dancing or running. Meditation is only about reaching a certain state of consciousness and not about following a specific programme.

Decision: What types of meditation mats are there and which one is right for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between four types of meditation mats:

  • Meditation mat with buckwheat husks
  • Meditation mat with cotton fleece
  • Meditation mat with virgin wool
  • Meditation mat with kapok

The most important characteristic of a good meditation mat is that it is comfortable to sit on. It is difficult to meditate well and relaxed if you are not sitting comfortably. For this reason, the filling material used is the biggest and most important difference between the various meditation mats.

The filling is decisive for whether you find the meditation mat comfortable and therefore functional and good or not. In the following section, we would like to help you find out which filling material is best suited for you. We will introduce you to the different materials and show you the most important advantages and disadvantages.

What distinguishes a meditation mat with buckwheat hulls and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Buckwheat hulls are an ideal filling material. The small shells keep your meditation mat loose and air-permeable at all times. The heat and moisture of your body can flow away and is not accumulated. For this reason, a meditation mat with buckwheat hulls is cooling and perfect for hot days. In addition, the material adapts very well to your body.

Advantages
  • Cooling
  • Anti-allergenic
  • Natural product
Disadvantages
  • May be too cooling on cold days
  • Rustles when moved
  • Heavy compared to the other materials

Meditation mats with buckwheat husks are comparatively heavy and make noise when you move on them. This is often perceived as a disadvantage

What distinguishes a meditation mat with cotton fleece and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The cotton fleece consists of various individual cotton fibres that are not woven together. This means that the fleece can have different thicknesses. The thicker the fleece, the softer the meditation mat. The warming property of the cotton fleece makes a meditation mat with this material very practical for colder days.

Advantages
  • Easy to care for
  • Washable and ironable
  • Warming
Disadvantages
  • Material becomes thinner over time
  • Rather hard compared to the other materials
  • Impractical on hot days

Unfortunately, the fleece can be compressed by the pressure of the body over time. It therefore becomes thinner and thinner with use, and can only be shaken up to a limited extent.

How does a meditation mat with pure new wool work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The pure new wool is formed into small balls and thus serves as a filling material. Due to the large volume of the wool, a meditation mat made of virgin wool is extremely comfortable. Nevertheless, the mat remains light and practical. Pure new wool can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet. This is especially practical when you sweat.

Advantages
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Lightweight
  • Voluminous and therefore very comfortable
Disadvantages
  • Does not wash well
  • Needs to be shaken out regularly
  • Expensive compared to the other materials

One disadvantage, however, is that virgin wool does not wash well. The wool grease on the fibres, which is responsible for many of the good properties of wool, is damaged during washing.

How does a meditation mat with kapok work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Kapok fibres, also called natural down, are real all-rounders. They weigh only a fraction of cotton fibres and are very voluminous. A meditation mat with kapok therefore offers maximum sitting comfort and remains super light and practical to transport. Kapok is breathable and at the same time retains heat. A meditation mat made of this material is therefore suitable for all seasons.

Advantages
  • Antiallergenic
  • Breathable
  • Heat-retaining
Disadvantages
  • Should not be washed
  • Must be shaken out regularly
  • Dusty

You should not wash a Kapok meditation mat. The fibres will lose their bitterness and thus their anti-allergenic effect.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate meditation mats

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible meditation mats. The criteria you can use to compare meditation mats include:

  • Material
  • Further criteria

Material

What you should look for most when buying is the material used. It is the biggest difference between the different meditation mats. Each material has certain advantages and disadvantages. With the help of our table you can easily find the right material for your mat.

Material Properties
Plastic Above all, plastic mats are very cheap compared to other materials. They are also very stable and particularly moisture-repellent. They are also easy to clean.
Rubber A very dense and heavy material that has excellent insulation properties. Also easy to clean.
Jute Meditators appreciate the naturalness of jute, which is produced completely free of harmful substances. For meditation beginners, however, jute might be too uncomfortable.
Sheep's wool Sheep's wool is very soft and cuddly. Disadvantage: high quality sheep's wool tends to be more expensive and harder to clean.
Latex Latex is very non-slip and thin. It is easy to roll up and transport.
Coconut fibres Exotic variant, which is often sold in other countries. Rarely available here, as coconut fibres are rough and uncomfortable.

Further criteria

In addition to the material used, meditation mats also differ in terms of their pattern, size and colour.

Did you know that the syllable Om is understood as a universal word that contains everything in itself? Om embodies the three states of consciousness: the waking state, the dream state and deep sleep. Om is used in Buddhism and Hinduism before a meditation to unite body, mind and soul.
