What can I use metal adhesive for?

Metal adhesive is primarily intended for bonding two metal materials.

Metal adhesive is a cheap and easy way of joining two metal materials. Unlike welding or screwing, no other tools are needed.

Industry now also relies on metal adhesives, especially in the automotive industry. This is because the adhesive not only holds together, but also fulfils functions such as sealing or corrosion protection on top of that.

Is metal adhesive heat-resistant?

Adhesive that still sticks at high heat is a special product, because many adhesives do not have these requirements.

Especially with materials like metals, however, heat is often involved when used. So the metal adhesive can still guarantee a secure bond here.

This is because many adhesives simply melt under high heat or their bond becomes porous and brittle.

Not all metal adhesives are heat-resistant. If you need such an adhesive, read the instruction sheet or the safety sheet that comes with the adhesive. Many manufacturers also explicitly advertise the heat tolerance of their metal adhesives.

Remember, however, that it is not only the heat that affects the metal adhesive, but also the type of metal or material on which the adhesive is applied.

Some adhesives only last within a certain temperature range or on certain materials.

Can I also glue glass, wood and plastic with metal adhesive?

If you want to bond glass with metal adhesive, there is extra glue in the metal adhesive section that is sold for a glass-to-metal bond.

If you want to glue wood and metal together, it is best to use polyurethane glue (Ponal PUR glue). Wood "works", i.e. it expands and contracts with less heat fluctuation than metal or due to moisture.

For this reason you need a flexible glue. Polyurethane glue (Ponal PUR glue) is specially developed for this.

To join plastic and metal with a metal adhesive, you can simply use metal glue. However, you should always check in advance whether the glue could attack the plastic. You can find this information on the package or in the product description.

How much does metal adhesive cost?

The prices for metal adhesive vary considerably depending on the quantity and manufacturer.

Small quantities start at 10 €, for more complex metal glue like a two-component glue in the professional version you pay about 25 €.

You will often find cheaper adhesives online. However, these are not special metal glues, but rather all-purpose glues that have been assigned to this category in the hobby sector.

What are the alternatives for gluing metal?

If you don't want to glue the metals you are working with, you still have other options, but they often require a little manual skill.

On the one hand, you can of course screw metals together. However, you have to make sure that you know the thickness of the metal. You also need special metal screws to be able to penetrate the material.

Special care must be taken with metal chips and metal powder, which can occur during processing. These can easily lead to injuries.

Another option is to weld metals. For this you need a welding machine, special protective equipment and the knowledge of how to use this equipment.

What are the characteristics of 2-component metal adhesive and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

As the name suggests, this metal adhesive consists of two different components.

Often 2-component metal adhesive is also called chemical weld.

The two components consist of granules and industrial adhesive. Small cracks are filled with the granulate and then soaked with the liquid industrial adhesive. For deeper cracks, the components are applied in layers.

After the drying time, the bonded area can still be worked on without any problems, such as drilled through, painted or sanded.

What are the characteristics of superglue for metal and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Special superglue for metal holds best with pure metal/metal joints.

Metal superglue usually has a medium heat resistance, but it is very easy to apply and the curing time is extremely short.

When buying, it would be advisable to choose a metal adhesive with a needle in the lid. This needle prevents air from entering the bottle. This way, the glue will last longer and you can use it several times.

What are the characteristics of liquid metal adhesives and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Liquid metal adhesives are conductive adhesives.

This means that they do not interrupt an electric circuit but connect it. This works because metal is incorporated into the adhesive.

The adhesive is available in different colours and has an extremely high adhesive strength.

The glue is also sold as a 2-component glue, but it has to be mixed before use. You then have about 30 minutes to work with it and must then let it dry for at least 24 hours.

What are the characteristics of metal adhesive in a cartridge and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

In order to be able to use this adhesive for metal, you need an applicator in addition to the adhesive, which is available in a cartridge.

Small cartridges in particular are sold in a two-cartridge system. This means that, as with the 2-component adhesive, the adhesive substances are not mixed together until bonding takes place. With metal glue in two cartridges, you therefore also need a mixer nozzle.

These metal adhesives are usually used for large-area projects, but they score points for their extreme durability.

Drying time

The drying time of an adhesive is often an important factor in the purchase decision. After all, who likes to wait a long time before the item is finally fully ready for use?

Two things are necessary for an adhesive to dry and harden:

  • Oxygen
  • Heat

Many adhesives can cure at room temperature. However, with most adhesives you have to wait a long time if you want to use them outdoors in winter.

Oxygen is needed so that the solvents contained in the adhesive can combine with it. This is how they "leave" the adhesive and it becomes hard.

Metal adhesive is not much different in this sense. We have briefly described an overview of the drying time of the four different metal adhesives in the following table:

Conductivity in this case refers to the ability of the metal adhesive to conduct or transmit electrical current.

Conductive metal adhesive is especially important when you want to make contacts on sensitive materials. The heat of a soldering iron, for example, often causes more damage than it repairs.

To make a metal adhesive conductive, you have to add metal to it. However, this also massively influences the drying time and prolongs it many times over.

Recently, it has even become possible to produce adhesives with high thermal conductivity, i.e. a heat conductor.

Heat resistance

Temperature fluctuations cause bonded areas to age more quickly and become brittle.

Heat is the biggest enemy for adhesives.

This is because heat attacks and dissolves the chemical bond of the cured structure. This means the adhesive can liquefy again or lose its adhesive power as its surface becomes porous.

This means that small holes form in the structure, making the material more vulnerable to force.

While normal adhesives, such as all-purpose adhesives, can withstand a heat of about 50° Celsius, metal adhesives can withstand a temperature of up to 120° Celsius without damage (even if they are not specifically labelled as heat-resistant).

Facts worth knowing about metal adhesives

How do I dissolve metal adhesives?

There is always the question of how to get the adhesive off again.

Basically, a cold bath works quite successfully. Simply put the piece to be worked on in the freezer or, if it is too large, cool it down with ice spray. This should also loosen metal adhesive.

It is important to know what type of adhesive is involved. If a heat-resistant metal adhesive has been used, you will not get far with the cold therapy tactic. In this case, a professional must be called in.

The adhesive must be heated to over 200° Celsius and you will need extra tools such as an iron placed on rails.

Can I also repair my tank with metal adhesive?

You can not only reseal your tank with metal adhesive. You can also use metal glue to repair bodywork and machine parts or pipes and gutters.

A 2-component metal adhesive is the right choice here. The granulate is applied to the fine crack and soaked with the adhesive. If there is a hole, you can put wax paper underneath (e.g. baking paper), let the granulate trickle up and soak it with the glue.

The baking paper can be removed when the glue has dried out.

However, it is easier to patch larger holes with metal repair compound, a kind of plasticine that is as hard as metal when dry. Because above a certain size, applying the granulate does become a bit tedious.

Can I make or repair jewellery with metal adhesive?

Glue is an easy way to join things together. It saves you the trouble of drilling and many other tools.

However, there are unfortunately limits to what you can do if you decide to use a gluing technique.

For example, you can only create solid connections if you glue something. For this reason, a combination of several techniques is often the solution.

Metal glue is excellent for crafting or repairing jewellery, for example, if you want to attach something to a hard, smooth surface.

Instead of having to make awkward edgings, you simply place a small dot of metal adhesive with the superglue and you're done.
