The Best Mole Trap: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a mole trap

How can I tell if I have a mole in my garden?

If you notice mounds of soil in your garden, you are most likely dealing with a vole or a mole.

The most important thing now is to find out which uninvited garden inhabitant it is. You can find out by taking a closer look at the shape and size of the mounds.

Shape and size give you important clues as to whether it is a vole or a mole.

The mounds of voles are easier to miss. They are flat, elongated and irregularly distributed. Moles, on the other hand, throw mounds up to 25 centimetres high. They can reach a diameter of up to 30 centimetres.

You're probably also wondering right now why moles do that?

They do it so they can ventilate their underground tunnels, so they dig upwards at more regular intervals than voles.

You are still unsure and don't know which animal it is?

Then you can carry out the so-called burrowing test:

  1. You use a stick to feel the ground next to the mound in circular paths until you hit a passage and sink in with the stick.
  2. Now you can dig up the passage to make a hole of about 30 centimetres.
  3. Check after a few hours to see if the passage is closed again, because then it is a vole. A mole would dig a new burrow underneath the opened burrow.

Unlike voles, moles hardly leave any damage in the garden. This is because voles eat your plant roots.

Moles are carnivores and feed exclusively on insects and small vertebrates.

What are my options for driving moles away?

You have the possibility to "scare away" moles with gentle means. However, this only works if you use these methods regularly.

The most effective ways to get rid of moles are the methods listed below:

  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • unpleasant smells

How much does mole repellent cost?

There is a not too large price range between the different means and methods.

The price for vibration methods is around 15-20 EUR. Ultrasonic methods are in the same price range.

Type price range
Vibration approx. 15-50€
Ultrasound approx. 10-55€
Odour approx. 10-20€

If you want to start with less investment, you are best served with odour methods and means.

Ultrasound and scent methods are probably a bit more expensive as they cannot be made from simple herbal ingredients but involve technology.

What are the alternatives ?

Alternatively, before you lay a lawn, sow or cultivate a bed, you can lay a so-called mole net underneath so that the mole does not have the opportunity to shovel its way up in the first place.

As small and innocent as they may look, moles can cause a lot of damage in your garden. (Image source: pixabay.com / Brun-nO)

However, if you live in a country where it is not forbidden by law to use live traps or killing traps, we will give you a brief overview of the alternatives:

Type Description
Pincer trap The pincer trap kills the mole directly in the passage by causing the pincer shackles to slam shut when it enters and the associated displacement of a metal blade.
Wire trap Several (very inexpensive, by the way!) wire traps made of copper-plated iron wire are placed in the holes of the mounds after manual tensioning according to instructions
Live trap A tubular live trap about 20cm long can be placed in the molehill so that it has access at both ends through the metal flaps, which cannot be opened outwards. However, they can be easily opened from the outside without harming the animal.
Mole net Available in different sizes and thicknesses, the mole net is the animal-friendly protection against the mole digging through, whereby the net is laid directly under the rolled turf before sowing the lawn seed.

Decision: What types of mole repellent are there and which is the right one for you?

What distinguishes an ultrasonic repellent and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

You can drive away moles with solar-powered mole repellers.

A mole repellent is shaped like a stake and is drilled into the ground. It contains a buzzer that regularly emits a sound.

The sound and its vibrations disturb the mole so that it may look for another territory.

Unfortunately, with this method, you need several molehoppers to be able to drive away a mole. In addition, their location must be changed again and again.

The best procedure is to first place them near a house wall and then move them a little towards the edge of the property every 2-3 weeks.

This will gradually drive the mole away from your property.

Advantages
  • cheap
  • animal-friendly
  • easy to use
Disadvantages
  • you need several
  • location must be changed regularly

What are the characteristics of a vibration barrier and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Moles sense every vibration. Too much regularly occurring earth vibration scares the animals away.

It is permissible to artificially induce such vibrations to drive the mole out of the garden.
Alternatively, you can knock wooden stakes or iron rods into the mole's passages and repeatedly hit them with a hammer.

This not only produces a sensitive sound as described above, but also makes the soil vibrate slightly.

Advantages
  • Animal-friendly
  • easy to use
Disadvantages
  • Somewhat more expensive on average

What are the characteristics of a butyric acid repellent and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

In addition to unpleasant noises and vibrations, you can also try to drive the mole away from the property with unpleasant scents. Moles have a very fine sense of smell.

The best-known household remedy against moles is a so-called decoction of crushed elderflowers, pressed garlic and crushed tree branches.

If you keep pouring small amounts of this into the tunnels, the mole will most likely look for another territory.

It is also important to keep repeating this. This means that you should open the mole tunnels 1-2 times a week every few metres and introduce the liquid.

You can also use other odour-intensive liquids, which will also drive the mole away after a certain time with regular use.

These include buttermilk acid: buttermilk, a broth of ground garlic, spicy horseradish-water mixture, mothballs, shaving lotion and a mixture of soap suds and boiled nuts.

Advantages
  • proportionally the most favourable
  • also do it yourself
Disadvantages
  • should be renewed 1-2 weeks
  • if necessary longer time until the mole is driven away

Info: It is best to use only products that are non-toxic to humans, animals and the environment. Otherwise you will cause great harm to plants and animals and pollute the groundwater.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate mole traps

In the following we will show you which criteria you can use to decide between the different methods.

The aspects that you can use to compare the means are:

  • Price
  • Running time
  • Range
  • Weatherproof
  • Ease of use

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important for each criterion.

Price

As already mentioned, there is not too big a price range between the methods and products. You have to invest about the same amount for vibration methods and ultrasound methods.

If the price is a little lower, you can use butyric acid, for example, for the odour methods.

Duration

If it is important to you that your investment has a long runtime, then we recommend the ultrasonic wave devices that are powered by solar energy. You are free of batteries and accumulators.

With the vibration method you are dependent on batteries. The runtime here is 4-6 months.

When using odorants, you are also not bound to a battery life. However, you have to regularly reintroduce the substance into the mole tunnels.

Whether summer or winter - molehills are a visual thorn in the side of garden owners all year round. So a long run of mole repellent can be of great help to you. (Image source: pixabay.com / Hans / 22244)

Range

The lowest range can be achieved by using odour-repelling agents. When using ultrasonic waves, you can achieve a range of 650 m².

The highest range is achieved with vibration devices with up to 1250 m².

Weatherproof

All methods and devices are guaranteed to be weatherproof.

Ease of use

You will probably have the most peace of mind with the devices that are powered by solar energy. You stick them in the ground and they get their energy with the help of UV rays.

You have to change the batteries of the ultrasonic waves every 4-6 months. Also at the beginning you have to make sure that you have some at hand if none are supplied.

The most annoying thing is the use of scents. If they do not have an immediate effect, you must replace them regularly.

However, it is always promised to be the quickest and most effective method.

Facts worth knowing about moles in the garden

What do I need to know about moles?

You should know that moles are solitary creatures. On average, moles inhabit territories of about 1,300. 3,500 square metres.

But in spring, the males enlarge their territories to mate with the female moles. After about 4 weeks, the young hatch.

About 2-7 babies are born per litter. As a rule, moles do not live longer than 3 years.

Unlike other mammals, their daily routine is not in a day-night rhythm. Instead, their daily routine is divided into 3 waking and sleeping phases.

They are usually active for 4-5 hours in the morning, afternoon and around midnight. During this time, they walk through their tunnels and search for food. The rest of the time they are sleeping.

Moles are active all year round and do not hibernate.

The mole - a beneficial insect in the garden

Even if you think that these molehills look anything but beautiful, moles are actually very useful. They loosen up the soil by digging a lot.

This allows the soil to absorb more rainwater, which in turn benefits the plants.

Even if you are only annoyed by the mounds, you could also use the loosened soil perfectly as potting soil for your flower boxes. Ideally, you should mix the soil with 1/3 sand and 1/3 compost.

This will give you the best mixture.

Moles are also a real help in destroying pests. They eat slugs, mosquitoes, larvae and grubs, among other things.

Centipedes and young mice are also on the mole's menu.
