For many people, moving house is stressful. However, with the right organisation and planning, this is not so bad. Especially the moving boxes play an important role. If the handles tear quickly or you have not labelled them, this can cost you a lot of nerves.

Before you move, you should find out about moving boxes, so that your move is guaranteed to be stress-free. There are many things to consider, for example, the quality of the boxes and the number of boxes you need. For our product comparison, we have compared different types and models and worked out the most important aspects.

  • Very good quality is the most important thing in moving boxes. Therefore, you should make sure that the boxes are double-walled and that the bottom and the handles are reinforced.
  • There are special boxes for crockery, clothes or books. The bottom of book boxes is additionally reinforced. Removal boxes usually have a maximum weight of 40 kilograms, which should not be exceeded.
  • To make unpacking the boxes easier, it is best to label the box with the room and contents. The labelling fields are best on the side. This way it can be read even when the boxes are stacked.

The Best Moving Boxes: Our Choices

Buying and evaluation criteria for moving boxes

We have worked out some criteria for you to consider when buying moving boxes. Good quality moving boxes are essential. The following criteria will help you choose the right moving boxes:

Below you will find the exact description of the listed criteria, so you know exactly what to look for when buying. This will ensure that your belongings get from A to B safely.

Moving boxes have a volume of 40 to 70 litres. Since there are different types of moving boxes, the dimensions vary. However, you should make sure that the sizes are as uniform as possible, as this makes them easier to stack. Smaller moving boxes have the advantage that they are lighter. 100 litre removal boxes sound like less lugging, but they are usually very heavy.

Load capacity

Most suppliers advertise a load capacity of up to 40 kg. It is recommended not to exceed this maximum weight. XXL moving boxes are therefore not always the best. It is more comfortable for you and your removal helpers to carry, for example, 25 kilograms. This guarantees a safe move.

Stable floor

Another quality feature is the floor. It must be easy to assemble, but stability also plays a significant role here. We advise you to make sure that the floor is double-walled. The advantage here is that the moving box is light, although it also scores with high stability.

Handle reinforcement

A common problem with moving boxes is that the handles tear. This of course makes moving very difficult. Therefore, special attention should be paid to this criterion. A reinforced and stable handle is therefore essential for a high-quality moving box.

Labelling field

To make moving as easy as possible, a labelling field is important. This should ideally be on the side so that even when the boxes are stacked you can still see what is packed and in which room it belongs. The following points should therefore be taken into account for the labelling fields:

  • Labelling field is on the side
  • Information about contents
  • Information about room

Guide: Frequently asked questions about moving boxes answered in detail

In the following, we would like to answer the most important questions about moving boxes. After that, you should have no more questions.

What types of moving boxes are there?

Since you have to pack many different things when moving, such as dishes, clothes or books, there is of course the right box for everything.

Removal boxes: Normal moving boxes meet the above criteria, but do not have any other additives, as with the types mentioned below.

Book carton: This type of moving boxes are smaller because they have to withstand a lot of weight. A reinforced bottom is particularly important here.

Clothes box: This box is man-sized and has a clothes rail. This means you can hang your clothes directly from the wardrobe into the moving box. The advantage of this type is that the clothes remain crease-free and the box is not too heavy. However, it is also bulkier.

Dish boxes: Dishes can be easily separated from each other using individually positionable cardboard dividers. This makes it easy to transport glasses, for example. When packing moving boxes with crockery, it is important that heavy and sturdy items are placed at the bottom. Cutlery in particular is very heavy.

How much does a moving box cost?

The price is determined by the quality and type of moving box. Normal moving boxes are therefore cheaper than a clothes box or book box. In the following table, the prices refer to one moving box.
Price range Available products
Low-priced (approx. 2 €) Simple moving boxes, book boxes
Medium-priced (approx. 4 €) Dish boxes with individual inserts
High-priced (8 - 12 €) Clothes boxes with clothes rail

Since moving boxes are made of cardboard and are very robust, they can of course be reused. It is therefore possible to borrow or even resell moving boxes. If you have your move done by a removal company, they will usually provide you with the boxes. This means that you can return the boxes to them.

How many boxes do I need?

What are suitable materials for packing the items in the moving box?

In addition to a sturdy moving box, the packaging of the items in the box is very important. Here are suitable materials:

  • Corrugated paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Newspaper

Furthermore, it should also be noted here that heavier, well-packed items belong at the bottom.

What helpful tips are there for moving house?

After choosing the right boxes based on the criteria and the right packaging, the move is much more organised and easier. Other tips to make moving easier for you are:

  • Sort the boxes by room. This way you know what belongs in which room when you unload.
  • For heavy items, such as a washing machine, you can use a transport belt for lifting.

To make moving as easy as possible, there are different types of moving boxes. Book boxes are extra sturdy so they are guaranteed not to tear. Clothes boxes are equipped with a bar so that the clothes do not crease. Dish boxes have compartments so that nothing gets broken.

When buying moving boxes, you should think about the amount of boxes you need and what types you need. The smaller the boxes, the easier they are to stack. However, quality is most important. A double-walled box, reinforced handles and base are essential and are therefore important purchase criteria.
