Summary

  • MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane and belongs to the group of organic sulphur compounds.
  • MSM products are said to have a pain-relieving and detoxifying effect. However, it is only a dietary supplement and not an actual medicine.
  • MSM tablets are mainly used for skin rashes or against inflammations. It is also a very popular alternative to medicines for arthritis.

The Best MSM Tablets:

Buying and evaluation criteria for MSM tablets

When buying MSM tablets, you can pay attention to various aspects, such as:

By making the right choice for you, you can save money and also ensure that you don't give your body anything it doesn't need. Therefore, always look for high quality and ask to see the manufacturer's certificates if necessary.

Dosage

Especially with tablets, the proportions of MSM can vary greatly. Find out about the recommended dosage beforehand in order to find the right product for you. In some cases, the dosage is also reflected in the price. High-quality tablets produced in Germany can lead to a higher price.

There is a high-dose tablet form, although this again affects the price.

Therefore, you should really pay attention to how much you actually need. In this way, money can be saved and, in addition, not too much can be taken.

However, there is no official daily requirement for MSM. However, there are no known significant side effects of MSM capsules, so the dose can be a secondary criterion for you. However, you should not exceed the recommended daily dose from the manufacturer.

Use

The most common occurrence of MSM is in tablet or capsule form and also in powder form. The application of all these forms of MSM is kept very simple, which is why it only depends on the individual's preferences. Those who find it difficult to swallow capsules can use MSM powder. This way, the required MSM can simply be drunk or mixed into anything else.

Sulphur has a rather bitter taste by nature.

However, capsules have no taste, while MSM powder is naturally very bitter, which could be unpleasant for people who are sensitive to taste.

The simplest option, however, is capsules and tablets. These are swallowed with a little water and ingested. Because they are so easy to handle, capsules and tablets are also ideal for travelling, as they come in a tin and are very easy to take with you. This is a little more difficult with the powder form, but those who don't find it too tedious can of course also transport it.

Additives

With MSM it is important that there are no other ingredients. That is why there is often a purity factor on the packaging to ensure optimal quality. This should correspond to 99 percent.

Furthermore, it should be checked beforehand whether the MSM tablets are in combination with other additives such as vitamins or contain other ingredients.

Mesh factor

The mesh factor tells you how well your body can absorb MSM. This is why it is of great importance when deciding what to buy. However, the lower the value, the better the body can absorb MSM.

This value is usually between 60 and 80, although even lower values are more expensive. If the value is above 80, this may indicate that the quality is poor.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about MSM tablets answered in detail

In order to inform you comprehensively about the effectiveness of MSM tablets and to give you an understanding of the current state of science, we have summarised all the important information in the following sections.

What are MSM tablets and how do they work?

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane and is a form of organic sulphur. This is responsible for the production of amino acids in the body, which in turn promotes the formation of important proteins. These have an influence on our metabolism and our well-being.

MSM is found naturally in plant and animal products. Our body also has MSM reserves. If there is a sulphur deficiency, MSM as a food supplement can compensate for it.

Sulphur helps the body to neutralise toxins.

As MSM is present in the cells of the body, it is particularly effective in binding toxins and removing them. It also strengthens the cell membrane and makes it easier to absorb important nutrients.

Sulphur ensures natural metabolic processes, good blood circulation, healthy breathing and the natural regeneration of our cells. MSM also helps to keep our joints supple and our muscles relaxed, as our bones depend on the formation of collagen. (1)

Effect on osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the number one chronic pain disease in Germany. Inflamed joints contain a lower concentration of sulphur than healthy tissue. In addition to cartilage wear, excessive formation of free radicals is also considered to be the cause of this. If the arthritic joint is subjected to too much stress in the long term, arthritis will result. (3)

Arthrosis can also make itself felt through joint pain in the wrist. (Image source: Steve Buissinne / Pixabay)

Older people are particularly affected. That is why MSM in combination with vitamin C is used to try to counteract it. This is supposed to reduce the swelling and inflammation. In this way, MSM can reverse the swelling and inflammation. This also relieves the pain and prevents the joints from stiffening.

This happens because MSM supplies the joints with biologically active sulphur and therefore relieves pain and inflammation. It also increases blood circulation and relaxes hardened muscles. However, the effect in general takes longer than conventional medicines. (1)

Effect against pain

MSM can be taken for pain. Above all, it helps to relieve pain in the musculoskeletal system. But MSM can also have a positive effect on simple headaches and even migraines.

MSM not only promotes blood circulation in the body and ensures that the muscles can relax, but also promotes the body's own production of anti-inflammatory hormones such as cortisone. (3)

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, athletes and fitness people in particular like to take MSM tablets. This is because the chemical compound is said to reduce muscle pain and soreness after intensive training sessions and to repair the fibrous tissue cells in the muscles. (2, 8)

Effect against dull hair and cracked nails

MSM is also said to improve the condition and appearance of the skin after several weeks of use. MSM can counteract wrinkles, the general elasticity and also the moisture condition of the skin.

This is said to be possible because sulphur is a component of the structural protein creatine, which can be found in the skin and in nails and hair. This can give them more shine again and strengthen them.

MSM can also be used to treat chronic inflammatory skin diseases and relieve redness of the skin. (10)

When and for whom is it useful to take MSM tablets?

MSM is a dietary supplement, which is why everyone is free to take it. MSM can be very helpful, especially in cases of pain or skin rashes.

MSM is also popular with athletes because it can relieve the pain of sore muscles after training. Therefore, it is ideal for fitness enthusiasts. (8)

MSM is well suited for the therapy of osteoarthritis.

But MSM is also ideally suited for people who are affected by osteoarthritis. However, in the case of serious diseases, it is better to seek the opinion of a doctor instead of diagnosing oneself. (1)

However, it is definitely recommended to enquire about it thoroughly before taking this medicine. It is best to seek advice from a doctor, as this will tell you which minerals are actually needed.

Otherwise, MSM is an organic sulphur compound that ranks fourth among the minerals in our body and it does no harm. However, pregnant women and also still breastfeeding mothers and children and adolescents under 18 years of age are recommended in many circles not to take more, although a negative effect has not been proven. (4)

How much do MSM tablets cost?

During our research we found out that the prices for MSM tablets can vary greatly depending on the dosage and quantity of the tablets. The quality also plays a significant role.

Dosage form price
MSM capsules or tablets approx. 15-20 GBP
MSM powder approx. 10-15 GBP

Tablets and capsules are usually the cheapest and cost on average between 15 and 20 GBP. At first glance, this seems like a lot of money, but you can usually get by for a very long time with these packages, as they contain a lot of capsules.

However, if you prefer to buy the alternative powder form, the cost is a little cheaper. The cost is around 10 to 15 GBP for one kilogram of powder. This should easily last a normal person a year.

But when buying this preparation, you should not only look at the price. The most expensive products are not always the best. You should also pay attention to the additives, the sulphur content and the way of taking it.

What types of MSM are there?

Since MSM occurs naturally, it is usually processed before it is sold. Therefore, the preparations containing MSM differ in their dosage form. Basically, a distinction can be made between these two types:

Type Description
MSM tablets or capsules These are neutral in taste and very easy to take.
MSM powder The dosage can be determined very individually and powder is usually cheaper.

MSM powder is usually cheaper than tablets and the dosage can also be determined very easily. However, it has a bitter taste of its own that is sometimes difficult to mask.

Capsules have the advantage that you don't have to dose them. You can simply throw them in and thus save time that would be lost with the powder form. Furthermore, capsules do not have a taste, but are neutral. But this is also reflected in the price.

How should MSM tablets be dosed?

A basic requirement of organic sulphur of about 850 milligrams per day is assumed. But many recommend taking at least 0.5 to 2 grams of MSM daily as a food supplement with meals to promote performance and maintain health. (9)

For a therapeutic effect, a slow increase to 3 to 4 grams daily can be useful. However, there are also many patients who use 6 to 10 grams and more per day to achieve relief or even freedom from symptoms in severe diseases.

This is because people react very differently and the exposure to environmental pollutants, inflammatory substances and other factors also varies. (1, 2)

When it comes to the dosage of MSM tablets, you should ask your doctor for advice in advance. (Image source: Michal Jarmoluk / Pixabay)

A higher dosage of MSM should be divided into two or more portions per day, as the body can use it better this way.

Since MSM is a dietary supplement and not a medicine, it takes time to feel an effect. This can happen within a few days, but often only after a few weeks. It is possible that you may have to increase the dosage for your own body. (1, 2)

What are the alternatives to MSM tablets?

MSM is found in many different foods. Instead of taking tablets, you can take meat products, eggs or milk. Because sulphur is mainly found in protein sources. But MSM is also found in garlic and onions. (6, 9)

What causes a lack of MSM?

It has not yet been medically proven that an excess of MSM has negative long-term effects on our body. Furthermore, no excess of sulphur in the diet has been found. However, a deficiency of this element can cause hair and nail growth disorders and can also contribute to the development of arthrosis.

If there is an excess of sulphur in the body, it is excreted via the kidneys and intestines. (5, 7)
