Decision section: What types of Mucosolvan are there and which one is right for you?

As mentioned above, there are different forms of Mucosolvan:

  • Cough syrup: one each for adults and children
  • Lozenges
  • Retard capsules
  • Film-coated tablets
  • Drops

There are different advantages and disadvantages to using these different forms of Mucosolvan. Depending on which form of application you prefer, a different form is suitable for you. For the sake of clarity, we have divided the dosage forms into liquid (cough syrup, drops) and solid (pastilles, tablets, capsules). In the following, we would like to explain the advantages and disadvantages of the two forms to make your decision easier.

What distinguishes Mucosolvan cough syrup and drops and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Because of their liquid consistency, Mucosolvan cough syrup and drops are easy to take. This is particularly advantageous for young children, who often have problems swallowing tablets and patients with swallowing difficulties. Both medicines can be dosed exactly. The drops in particular can be added to food and drinks without adulterating their taste. According to our research, the active ingredient is absorbed quickly due to its liquid consistency, so that the patient feels better quickly.

  • Easy to take for smaller children and patients with swallowing difficulties
  • Exact dosage
  • Quick and complete absorption of the active ingredient
  • Strawberry-vanilla or wild berry flavour of the cough syrup may not be to everyone's taste
  • perishable due to light and oxygen
  • Short shelf life (6 months)

The taste of the cough syrup variants is rather critical. The adult version tastes like strawberry-vanilla, the one for children like forest berry. These two flavours might not be to everyone's taste, so that patients find it difficult to take the product. In addition, both products are light and oxygen perishable due to their liquid form, unlike the solid product forms. In addition, both Mucosolvan cough syrups and Mucsolvan drops have a comparatively short shelf life: once opened, they can only be kept for 6 months.

What distinguishes Mucosolvan lozenges, tablets and sustained-release capsules and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

The solid product forms (lozenges, tablets and delayed-release capsules) also have a rapid effect. The effect of the Mucosolvan sustained-release capsules is particularly noteworthy. They only have to be taken once a day and help throughout the day.

  • Fast effect
  • easy to dose
  • long shelf life
  • With the Mucosolvan lozenges: no additional fluid intake necessary
  • Poorly suited for patients with swallowing difficulties (except Mucosolvan lozenges)
  • For Mucosolvan film-coated tablets and Mucosolvan retard capsules: additional fluid intake necessary

All three products are easy to dose. The film-coated tablets can even be divided. The Mucosolvan lozenges can be taken without fluid intake and are therefore very suitable for when you are on the go. The long shelf life of solid products is particularly remarkable compared to the liquid forms: once opened, they have a shelf life of 2-3 years. Except for the Mucosolvan lozenges, the products are not well suited for patients with swallowing difficulties or small children. An additional liquid intake is necessary to take the Mucosolvan film-coated tablets and Mucosolvan retard capsules.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate Mucosolvan

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible Mucosolvan products. The criteria you can use to compare Mucosolvan products include:

  • Package size and shelf life
  • Age & dosage

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important in each of the criteria.

Package size and shelf life

All product forms are available in different pack sizes. The liquid products are available in millilitres, the solid dosage forms differ in terms of the number of tablets they contain. For the liquid forms, the Mucosolvan cough syrup for children and for adults contains 100 and 200 ml respectively. The Mucosolvan drops contain 50-100 ml. Both products can only be kept for 6 months after opening, so it is advisable to use them up quickly. The Mucosolvan lozenges are available in 20- or 40-tablet packs.

The Mucosolvan film-coated tablets are also available in two versions: one with 20 and one with 50 tablets. The Mucosolvan retard capsules are even available in three variants: 10, 20 or 50 tablets. All solid products have a long shelf life of 2-3 years compared to liquid products. All product sizes explained are shown in the table below. The shelf life of the individual products are tabulated below.

Product Product size
Mucosolvan cough juice for children and adults 100 or 200 ml
Mucosolvan lozenges 20 or 40 pieces
Mucosolvan film-coated tablets 20 or 50 pieces
Mucosolvan retard capsules 10,20 or 50 pieces
Mucosolvan drops 50 or 100 ml

Age & dosage

The different product forms differ in their dosage. The type of dosage depends on the age of the person with the disease. The liquid products (Mucosolvan cough syrup, Mucosolvan drops) are suitable for babies and (small) children. The solid products (Mucosolvan lozenges, Mucosolvan film-coated tablets and Mucosolvan sustained-release capsules) are not suitable for babies and young children. Mucosolvan lozenges may be taken from the age of 6 years. The Mucosolvan film-coated tablets and Mucosolvan retard capsules, on the other hand, are only suitable for patients aged 12 and over. Compared to similar products from other companies, the Mucosolvan cough syrup has a low dosage.

For people 12 years and older, it is recommended to take 5 ml of the product 2-3 times a day. The cough syrup from Ratiopharm must be dosed more strongly: Here, it is advised to take 10 ml of the product 2-3 times a day. This low dosage makes one bottle of Mucosolvan cough syrup very economical. The Mucosolvan drops are also dosed lower than, for example, the drops from Ratiopharm.

For teenagers from 12 years and adults, doctors recommend taking 2 ml of the drops 2-3 times a day. Double the dose (4 ml) of the Ratiopharm drops is recommended. Consequently, the Mucosolvan drops are also very rich. The dosage of the Mucosolvan lozenges is comparatively high. From the age of 12, it is recommended to take one lozenge 6 times a day during the first 2-3 days of the illness. Due to this high dosage, the Mucosolvan lozenges are not particularly productive compared to the other product forms.

Pack size of 20 tablets, for example, would be used up very quickly with this dosage. According to the package leaflet, half a Mucosolvan film-coated tablet is taken 3 times a day for the first 2-3 days. In contrast to the Mucosolvan lozenges, the Mucosolvan film-coated tablets are therefore much more economical. The highest-yielding product form among the solid alternatives is the Mucosolvan retard capsules.

From the age of 12, doctors and pharmacists recommend 1 capsule per day. This low dosage and the long shelf life of 3 years make the Mucosolvan retard capsules particularly recommendable.

Cough syrup for children and adults 0-2 years: 1.25 ml 2 times a day 2-5 years: 1.25 ml 3 times a day 6-12 years: 2-3 times daily 2.5 ml 12 years and older: 5 ml 3 times daily for the first 2-3 days, then 5 ml daily
