What is Mucuna pruriens?

If you hear the term "Mucuna pruriens", you probably don't know what it means at first. Few people are familiar with the term "itch bean" either.

At the same time, the plant, which grows on trees, provides the so-called L-dopa, a dopamine precursor.

Where is the itch bean found?

The itch bean originally comes from China and certain parts of India and was cultivated there as a vegetable plant.

In Mauritius and the Himalayas, the inhabitants cooked the ripe beans as well as the pods and consumed them.

It is still cultivated in India - but there it is now known as a "poor man's" food.

Other places of use are Mexico and Guatemala. Here, Mucuna pruriens is occasionally used as a coffee substitute.

The jockey bean is a truly hardy plant - even poor soil does not bother the Mucuna pruriens.

It also protects itself from insects thanks to inedible substances, L-dopa and hallucinogens.

How does Mucuna pruriens work in humans?

The areas of application of Mucuna pruriens are very diverse. On the one hand, the bean has an antioxidant effect, but is primarily used for nervous disorders.

Male infertility and even Parkinson's disease have also been treated with this bean.

In summary, Mucuna pruriens is used for the following complaints and diseases:

Parkinson's

Especially in the fight against Parkinson's, a disease that is becoming more and more common, Mucuna pruriens is taken in Ayurveda.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Mucuna puriens is taken against Parkinson's disease.

From a scientific point of view, this is very positive, because in the first results, scientists conclude that the L-dopa is just as effective as the synthetically produced levodopa - if not better.(1)

At the same time, the itch bean does not show the classic side effects. Of course, Mucuna pruriens still cannot be called a "cure for Parkinson's", because it is truly too early for that.

Nevertheless, the first scientific results already look very positive.(2)

Infertility/Libido

According to studies, both sperm count and sperm motility could only be increased by five grams of powder of Mucuna pruriens (over three months).(3)

You can increase your sexual desire with Mucuna puriens.

Success has also been achieved in the area of other indications for fertility.

In general, sexual activity could be increased after taking Mucuna pruriens in animal experiments.

Stress

One study looked at mental health and how the body deals with stress. For this purpose, 120 men who suffered from psychological stress were examined.

They took the itch bean during the study and were able to report a lower feeling of stress.(3)

Taking Mucuna pruriens stimulated the antioxidant system, which in turn led to greater physical balance.

Depression

There are still no scientifically verifiable studies on the effect of itch beans on depression.

Diabetes

In 2011, a study addressed the effect of mucuna pruriens on diabetes patients - at least animal patients.

The blood sugar level of diabetic rats could be reduced by administering the extract.(5)

The conclusion of the study was that researchers assume that the itch bean could be used as a basis for drugs against diabetes.

Mucuna pruriens is also used for sleep disorders, anxiety disorders and arthritis.

In a larger study, the test persons took 15 to 30 grams of Mucuna pruriens over twelve to 20 weeks.

No side effects were found. The exception was one patient who reported nausea, but not due to the bioactivity but due to the plant digestibility.

Higher doses were only tested in animal experiments. Here, 32 mg/kg were used. Erections and uncontrolled motor movements of the animals were observed.

Possible, but rather classified as rare side effects at higher doses, are nausea, dizziness and insomnia.

Important: Scientists expressed concern that Mucuna pruriens may cause inhibition of the hormone prolactin.

This could inhibit milk production in pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, which is why these target groups should not take Mucuna pruriens.
