The Best Natural Hair Colour: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a natural hair colour

Who is natural hair colour suitable for?

In principle, natural hair colour is suitable for all people who want to colour their hair. It does not matter whether you want to refresh your natural hair colour, cover grey hair or change your type.

Natural hair colour, which is also called plant hair colour or vegetable hair colour, is especially suitable for people who want to avoid chemical additives as much as possible.

Just like the other hair colours, natural hair colour can be used to colour the hair at home without much effort.

So if you want to avoid chemicals on your scalp and colour your hair at home, this is the product for you.

To give you a first practical impression, we have a video for you here.

What shades of natural hair colour are available?

Natural hair colour is actually available in almost all colours. Besides the darker types like black and brown, there are also red, red-blonde and blonde.
Fancy colours like green or purple are also available.

It should be noted, however, that only natural shades of the colours are covered. So there is no such thing as a garish green, but there is a forest green. The same applies to blonde. A light platinum blonde will not be achievable with a natural hair colour.

Natural hair colours are available in all shades that occur in nature.

In general, darker hair cannot be coloured lighter than the natural hair with natural hair colours. You also have to keep in mind that natural hair dyes react differently on each hair. So the result can differ depending on the hair structure and the original colour.

Does natural hair colour cover grey hair?

Yes, natural hair colour can cover grey and white hair. The natural colour pigments form a protective layer around the hair. However, it can happen that the original hair colour shimmers through the layer of colour pigments. This problem can be solved easily: If necessary, repeat the colouring process so that another layer covers the hair.

What are the ingredients of natural hair colour?

Natural hair dyes are often based on plant proteins. It does not matter whether they are wheat, soy or maize proteins. Besides various oils, which are responsible for the care and shine of the hair, another major ingredient is henna (usually organic henna).

Organic henna is a time-honoured medicinal plant that is used for hair care. The henna plant originates from Asia and Africa, where it is also used to paint the body. The dried and ground petals give the hair a red shine.

Depending on the colour, there are other additives.

Colour natural ingredients
Black Indigo
Brown Walnut shells, coffee
Red tones Henna, beetroot
Golden blonde Cassia

Depending on the ingredients, allergic reactions may of course occur. Therefore, please be aware of possible allergies!

Are natural hair colour and perm compatible?

Basically, yes. However, it depends on the order in which you proceed.

If you already have a perm and want to colour your hair, then it's no problem. Especially here, the nurturing effect of the natural hair colour comes out strongly. The result: a wavy and shiny head of hair.

If you want to get a perm after colouring your hair, it may not last as long. However, if you want to be sure, it's best to go to a hairdresser.

How much does natural hair colour cost?

In terms of price, natural hair colour is in a low range. Depending on the brand, you can expect to pay between € 9 and € 18.

What are the alternatives to natural hair colour?

As an alternative to natural hair colour, there is the chemical method of colouring hair. Each offers advantages and disadvantages.

A decisive advantage is the wider colour spectrum. Due to the chemical ingredients, not only is the colour palette larger, but darker hair can also be coloured lighter. However, especially when lightening hair, a professional should be consulted to be on the safe side. They can dye the hair more gently than is possible at home.

Chemical hair dyes offer a wider colour spectrum than natural hair dyes.

The disadvantage lies clearly in the chemical ingredients of the commercially available hair dyes. Besides possible allergic reactions, they can damage the hair or affect the scalp if used incorrectly. Therefore, you must make a reaction test before use.

The price of chemical hair dyes ranges from € 5 to € 40. To make it clearer, we have provided a price comparison here:

Average price natural hair colour Average price chemical hair colour
€ 12 € 15

A method of colouring the hair more gently are so-called colour shampoos, such as silver shampoo.

Decision: What types of natural hair colours are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, a distinction can be made between two types of natural hair dyes. These refer to the raw form in which they are delivered.

  • Natural hair colour in powder form
  • Natural hair colour in cream form

To help you decide, we have listed the advantages and disadvantages of each type in the following paragraphs.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of powder-based natural hair colour?

If you buy natural hair colour in powder form, this means that you have to mix the colour first. The package contains a powder that you have to mix with warm water (usually 50°C). This will turn into a paste, which you should apply to clean hair.

The application time can vary. Depending on the initial situation and hair colour, you have to wait between 30 minutes and an hour.

An advantage of hair colour powder is that it can be mixed with all other colours. Depending on the desired result, you can also buy other colours and mix the powders in dry form, as desired. However, make sure that you choose the same brand of products.

Advantages
  • No other ingredients are needed except water
  • Mixable with all colours
  • Naturally crushed dyes
Disadvantages
  • Long reaction time
  • The powder can contaminate the rest of the environment with a colour dust
  • Before application, mixing takes some time

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cream-based natural hair colour?

If you buy your hair colour in a cream form or liquid consistency, you save yourself the trouble of mixing it before application. Instead, the colour usually needs to be mixed with an emulsifier. To do this, simply open the emulsifier bottle and pour in the contents of the paint tube. Then you have to shake the mixture vigorously.

After washing your hair, you can apply the colour directly from the bottle. These bottles usually have a small opening for precise application.

Advantages
  • Precise application
  • Less risk of a mess
  • All ingredients are in the package
Disadvantages
  • More packaging waste
  • Requires stamina to shake the mixture
  • The emulsifier may contain additives

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate natural hair dyes

In this section we explain which criteria play a role when buying and how you can decide on the best natural hair colour for your individual needs.

Here you will find an overview of what you should consider when buying:

  • Colour
  • Quantity
  • Packaging

In the following paragraphs, we will go into more detail on the individual aspects and explain to you what exactly you should consider.

Colour

As mentioned above, you cannot lighten hair with natural hair colour. Otherwise, the entire colour spectrum is open to you. Depending on whether you want to intensify your natural colour, make a small change or go darker, you can choose between many colour shades.

Quantity

Basically, the amount of one pack is intended for one application. However, if you only want to dye your roots, you probably won't need the entire contents. If you have very long hair and want to dye it all, the contents may not be enough.

For colouring the roots, the powder form of the natural hair colour is more suitable. You can mix the powder you need and keep the rest dry and well sealed. It is not possible to store products in cream form.

Packaging

The packaging of the different brands is very different. If the appearance of the packaging is important to you, simply choose according to your taste.

However, packaging should also take into account the amount of waste that is left behind after use. Especially plastic packaging is not good for our environment and we should avoid it if we can.

Natural hair colours in powder form usually leave less packaging waste than cream-based products.

Facts worth knowing about natural hair dyes

How can I make natural hair colour myself?

Basically, there are many products in every household that you can use to change your hair. It is not necessary to mix a real colour.

To lighten the hair, lemon juice, baking soda or camomile is often used. Here is a small recipe for a mixture that lightens the natural hair colour:

  • 1/4l camomile tea
  • Egg yolk
  • 8 tbsp rhubarb root pieces
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil

Boil the rhubarb root in the chamomile tea. Once the mixture has a porridge-like consistency, stir in the rest and apply to the hair.

Walnut leaves, coffee grounds and onion peel help to achieve a beautiful brown.

If you prefer fancy colours, like a bright red or purple, you can use beetroot or elderberry to dye your hair.

How long does natural hair colour last?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to make a general statement about this. Just like the colour intensity, the durability also varies from hair to hair.

The durability of natural hair colour depends on the hair structure, the original colour and the care.

The colour intensity decreases with hair washes, but never disappears completely. Therefore, the difference between dyed hair and regrown natural hair is never as extreme as with chemically dyed hair.

How do I apply natural hair colour?

Depending on what you want to dye, there are different techniques. At the beginning, you always have to mix the colour.

If you want to dye the whole head, this is the best way:

  1. Part your hair in the middle and start working the colour in, strand by strand, from the scalp down.
  2. When the centre parting is done, part your head a few centimetres to the side and start again.
  3. Once the entire head is covered, massage in the remaining colour.
  4. Leave the colour on for the allotted time and then wash it off thoroughly, preferably with gloves on.

How can I refresh my hair colour?

In addition to chemical and herbal hair dyes, colour intensifying shampoos and conditioners can also be used. These are available for all kinds of hair colours. They intensify the shine of the hair colour.

To keep hair looking healthy and radiant, proper care is also important. With different oils, especially coconut oil, you can pamper your hair and give it a lot of moisture. But so-called hair masks also provide your hair with the necessary care.
