Quality / Dose

The quality and the dose are an important feature, as the various dosage forms also have different doses. Capsules are already pre-dosed, unlike creams, liquids and toothpastes, which you have to dose yourself.

The recommended daily dose is between 500 and 1,500 milligrams of olive leaf extract. To give you an overview, we have selected the common dosages for the different forms.

Capsules usually have a daily dosage of 300 mg to 1000 mg. However, there are also capsules with a dosage of up to 1500 mg. For liquids, the common dosage is between 7.5 ml and 22.5 ml.

Additives

The most important ingredients of olive leaf extract include oleuropein, a natural antioxidant of the olive tree. Other ingredients are various flavonoids, which promote wound healing.

Oleuropein and favonoids are purely biological ingredients.

The higher the proportion of oleuropein, the more effective the extract. You should also make sure that the olive leaf extract is as pure as possible and does not contain any additional alcohol or sugar.

A few products also contain glycerine, which transforms the bitter taste of the olive leaf extract into a real treat. However, some of the purity and thus the effect is lost.

But there are also beneficial additives. Products in combination with vitamin C, for example, have above all a strengthening effect, which among other things has a positive effect on the immune system.

Area of application

In addition to the dose, the application is another factor that must be taken into account. Depending on what the olive leaf extract is to be used for, a distinction is made between the types of application.

For example, a toothpaste made from olive leaf extract does not have the same desired effect as capsules or liquids.

What is olive leaf extract and how does it work?

Olive leaf extract is, as the name suggests, an extract obtained from the leaves of the olive tree. The fruits of the tree are already known for their positive effects on the body, but the leaves also have positive properties.

Studies have shown that the leaf of the olive tree contains much more antioxidant activity composition than the fruit (1). This is especially due to the ingredients:

  • Oleuropein
  • Flavonoids
  • Polyphenols

These three are the main active ingredients in the leaf, although of course some secondary active ingredients may still be present. The diversity and high content of active ingredients thus form a basis for the further development and use of olive leaf extract.

Its history begins more than 7000 years ago in Mesopotamia. The ancient Egyptians used the preciousness of the olive tree for health and beauty. For them, the olive leaf symbolised heaven and they used it to embalm their kings

High blood pressure

Olive leaf extract is said to have a positive effect on blood pressure and has hardly any side effects worth mentioning compared to pharmaceutically produced blood pressure reducers. But what about the scientific evidence?

A specially prepared olive leaf extract was tested for its blood pressure lowering effect in rats. The special extract was found to give consistent results and to have an antihypertensive effect. (2)

In another study, olive leaf extract, which has antihypertensive effects in rats, was tested as a dietary supplement in an open study with 40 borderline hypertensive monozygotic twins.(3)

Caution: Do not independently discontinue antihypertensive medication in order to replace it with olive leaf extract.

Blood pressure changed significantly within the pairs depending on the dose, with some differences. In conclusion, however, the study confirmed the blood pressure-lowering and cholesterol-lowering effects of the extract in humans.

Bacteria / fungal infection

In a study from 2007, scientists from Portugal underlined the extent to which olive leaf extract can be used against bacterial and fungal infections, especially in the intestinal tract.

Not only the valuable oleuropein, but also substances such as glycosides, flavonoids, terpenes, phytosterols, polyphenols and bitter substances can act as protection against these diseases.

An analysis of the olive leaf extract made it possible to identify seven phenolic compounds. These are known for their antimicrobial capacity, which is how the olive leaf extract achieves its positive effect.

The results show that the olive leaf extract showed an unusual combined antibacterial and antifungal effect at low concentrations. (4)

Gout

In Mediterranean regions, olive leaves have been used for centuries to treat gout. A study by the University of Leipzig has now also provided the first scientific evidence of what traditional folk medicine has known for a long time.

Scientists at the University of Leipzig were able to show in a study that the active substances contained in olive leaf extract are able to inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase. (5)

In case of chronic or acute diseases, always ask your doctor or alternative practitioner for advice before using olive leaf extract.

This is responsible for the development of gout, which is why even gout patients can benefit from the use of the extract under certain circumstances.

Another advantage is that the olive leaf extract can be excellently combined with other medical measures and support them in their effectiveness.

When and for whom is it useful to take olive leaf extract?

What parts of the plant are used in olive leaf extract?

As the name suggests, the plant parts used are the leaves of the olive tree. In the following, we will explain the process to you a little more closely:

  • Harvest: The leaves are harvested one day before the tree flowers. Afterwards, the blossoms on the trees are cut off manually.
  • Extraction: The olive leaf extract is gently extracted from fresh leaves immediately after harvesting and thus has a 4.5-fold higher biological activity than the extract in capsule form from dried leaves.
  • Follow-up: In the two following years, no leaves are harvested, only the fruiting of the tree is prevented by cutting off the blossoms. This ensures that the olive tree produces an optimal number of leaves with all the ingredients and that the highest quality olive leaf extract can be obtained.

How much do olive leaf extract products cost?

As you already learned in the previous section what types of olive leaf extracts there are, we would now like to introduce you to the different costs for the various types.

For the capsules, the prices are usually between 17 and 35 euros. The more capsules or tablets in a package and the higher the dosage, the more expensive the product. In Germany, the dosages range from 300 mg to 1000 mg.

The extract of the leaf of the olive tree is also available in the form of creams. Prices vary depending on the weight of the product. The usual commercial sizes are between 50 ml and 100 ml and cost between 20 and 35 euros.

The most expensive forms are the liquid variants of olive leaf extract. Here the price range is between €25 and €105. The price is related to the product size. Often the same product is available in sizes from 100 ml to 500 ml, at different prices.

An alternative is toothpaste with olive leaf extract. Here you can either opt for toothpastes that consist purely of this extract or buy toothpastes in which the olive leaf extract is an ingredient.

These are usually available at a small price, but are still more expensive than regular toothpaste.

What types of olive leaf extract are there?

If you are thinking about buying preparations made from olive leaf extract, you can choose between the following forms:

These four preparations have different advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the application for which the preparation is suitable, as well as which intake you prefer, a different type is suitable for you.

Capsules

Capsules and tablets with olive leaf extract are a particularly good way to take the extract in its pure form, without the addition of additives.

In this way, you can supply your body with the necessary bitter substances, which the liver and digestion in particular urgently need, in a simple and uncomplicated way. Furthermore, capsules are considered to be the best tolerated of the various ways in which you can take olive leaf extract.

These creams with olive leaf extract are characterised in particular by the fact that they are applied to both the body and the face and have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste in combination with olive leaf extract is often mixed with other herbs, such as chamomile and stevia, so that the toothpaste cares for sensitive gums and protects the natural oral flora.

In addition, no chemicals are used, so it can also be used during homeopathic treatment.

However, there are different dosages here, so that they can even be dosed higher than comparable capsules. For example, there are versions with 70 % and 90 % olive leaf extract.

Ingestion, on the other hand, is very simple: just add a few drops to your favourite drink and take it.

However, it is important to note that the recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. This amounts to 3 times 2.5 ml up to a maximum of 3 times 7.5 ml.

How should olive leaf extract be dosed?

As there are only a few human studies available so far that could lead to concrete dosage recommendations, we recommend dosing the olive leaf extract as suggested by the manufacturers.

The dose may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, which will be due to the different oleuropein content. However, there are some basic daily doses that may be taken.

Normally, one capsule of the olive leaf extract capsules is taken up to 3 times a day and is thus usually supplied with 300 mg of oleuropein.

Most capsules contain about 500 mg of extract and 100 mg of oleuropein. It is best to start with just one capsule a day and observe the tolerance and effect.

In the case of a candida infestation, i.e. a fungal infection, bacterial digestive problems or the presence of parasites, you can even test the tolerance on an empty stomach, because then the extract works better.

If you experience diarrhoea or nausea, it is better to take the extract after a small meal.

What are the risks of taking olive leaf extract ?

Due to the lack of studies, little is known about the safety of taking olive leaf extract regularly. However, there is some concern that olive leaf extract may cause mild side effects such as stomach ache and headache. (10)

Some people may develop an allergy to olive leaf extract. The pollen of the olive leaf can cause allergic respiratory reactions in people who are allergic to plants from the Oleaceae family, which includes the natural olive trees.

Olive leaf extract may interact with certain medications. Olive leaf extract should not be taken if you are already taking other blood pressure medications, as it can make your blood pressure too low. (11)

People taking insulin or other blood sugar medication should also not take olive leaf extract as this can cause hypoglycaemia. (12)

Since olive leaf extract may interfere with the effect of certain chemotherapeutic drugs due to its antioxidant properties, people undergoing such treatment should talk to their doctor before taking it.

Can I make olive leaf extract myself?

The organic cultivation, the location, the climate, the ripeness, the time of harvest, the drying and storage conditions or duration of storage of the raw material have a direct influence on the concentration of the ingredients.

A large quantity of olive leaves is needed to produce the extract

It is very difficult to produce the extract oneself, as olive trees grow mainly in Mediterranean regions.

You can either buy olive leaf extract in pure form and stir it into a neutral cream.

However, if you have the opportunity to get hold of a lot of olive leaves, you can follow our instructions below on how to make your own tea extract:

  • Boiling: First boil the water and put the olive leaves in the boiling water for 20 minutes.
  • Allow to steep: After 20 minutes, the tea extract has already steeped. However, the longer you let the tea steep, the stronger it becomes.
  • Ingestion: Now the olive leaf extract is ready for use and can be ingested. There, the healing effect should unfold quickly.

This tea extract is especially tasty if you add a little lemon or lime juice. It is also popular to brew it together with a few pieces of fresh ginger or mint leaves.

Is olive leaf extract also suitable for children?

In recent times, olive leaf extract has become an incredibly popular natural remedy because it is believed that its natural resistance is also transferred to the human body.

It helps against many kinds of health problems that affect not only adults but also children. So is olive leaf extract safe and effective to give to children?

Preparations containing glycerine should be avoided in children.

Olive leaf extracts can also be used in children to prevent inflammation or to combat illnesses such as flu or constipation. Many homeopaths agree that olive leaf extract is safe for children over one year of age.

Preparations with glycerine contain alcohol and can lead to an impairment of the child's cognitive development.

Liquid forms of olive leaf extract are often best for children who dislike pills or the sour taste of some powders.

How does olive leaf extract intolerance manifest itself?

People can have an intolerance to any product they take. How this manifests itself varies greatly. Some people have an allergy and react with shortness of breath, diarrhoea, headaches or nausea.

The reaction also depends on the dosage form. Ointments can cause rashes that look like acne.

In principle, however, intolerance to olive leaf extract is rare.
