What does organic wine mean?
The focus is not only on the vine but on the whole vineyard. Natural planting ensures that the soil is kept alive.
This allows the soil to supply the vines with water and many valuable nutrients that often have to be added in conventional cultivation.
However, if you think that organic winegrowers do not use any kind of pesticides, you are wrong.
The difference to conventional viticulture is that the vines of organic wine are only treated with naturally occurring substances.
One controversial pesticide is copper. It is officially allowed as a pesticide in organic wine, but too much copper damages the soil and can kill microorganisms.
This contradicts the idea of organic viticulture and is therefore avoided.
Synthetic fertilisers are also avoided when fertilising the plants. They try to fertilise with compost or rock dust.
Worldwide, the organically cultivated vineyard area of wines increased from 88,000 to 256,000 hectares in this period.
With an average growth of 25 percent per year and more than 7,000 hectares worldwide, Germany is in sixth place.
The market share of organic wine is between 4 and 5 %.
In conventional viticulture, genetic engineering and pesticides may be used. In organic farming, this is strictly prohibited. Here, organic winegrowers rely on robust grape varieties that can naturally repel pests.

Are there sulphites in organic wine?
The amount is very small, but nevertheless a wine can never call itself "sulphur-free" but only "unfermented".
There are also sulphites in organic wine. Sulphur has been used as a preservative for centuries. Sulphur is not a synthetic substance, but a natural agent.
However, the sulphur content in the EU is also subject to strict guidelines. A maximum value may not be exceeded in the preservation of food.
There are re-sulphurised wines, but these wines are produced by specialists. During the grape harvest, every single rotten grape must be sorted out so that the wine does not go bad. This involves a great deal of effort.

What distinguishes an organic wine and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The most obvious advantage of organic wine is the way it is grown.
Organic winegrowers not only use natural fertilisers and do not use any pesticides or fungicides, but they also try to make the vineyard a naturally self-working ecosystem.
The mineral content in organic wine is also said to be much higher because the roots of the vines grow deeper into the soil and can thus absorb more minerals.
Organic wine also contains less sulphites than conventional wine. The low sulphur content is an advantage especially for allergy sufferers.
The organic cultivation of organic wine means that the selection is not as high as that of conventional cultivation.
Especially in the beginning, organic winegrowers suffer many losses, as the vines first have to get used to their "natural" habitat.
Organic wine is subject to many restrictions due to its cultivation and is altogether more costly in cultivation and production than conventional wine. This is why organic wine is often more expensive than normal wine.
If you think that organic wine automatically tastes better than conventional wine, you are wrong. In blind tastings, it was found that organic wine more often has off-flavours and seems unstable.
But as with many things, taste is also subject to the skill of the winemaker. There are good organic wines and bad conventional wines and vice versa.
What distinguishes a conventional wine and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The conventional cultivation of wine is extremely widespread, which means that you have a very wide choice of wines from all over the world.
That's why the price range for regular wine is much wider than for organic wine. You get very good wine for relatively little money.
The disadvantage of conventional cultivation is the environmental aspect. The winegrowers do not use organic farming methods. The synthetic fertilisers do not end up in the wine itself, but of course they still pollute the soil and the vines.

You can recognise an organic wine by the EU organic seal on the label of the bottle. This seal certifies that the winemaker has complied with all guidelines during production.
In addition, organic wines often bear a logo on the bottle from institutes where the wineries have their production monitored.

In order to recognise the quality of a wine, quality classes have been introduced in Germany.
Quality wines are wines with a protected designation of origin. This means that these wines come from one of the 13 German wine-growing regions. These wines must have passed an official quality test.
For each type of wine, i.e. grape variety and growing region, there are different limits for the natural alcohol content.
However, quality wines are also allowed to be enriched with sugar to increase the alcohol content, but this amount of sugar is also prescribed by law
Prädikat wines are subject to the highest quality requirements, as no enrichment is allowed. There are a total of 6 different Prädikat wines in Germany, which differ in their minimum must weight.

Land wines include wines with a protected geographical indication. There are 26 Landwein regions in Germany, which were defined in 2009.
German wines, are wines without an exact designation of origin. These wines may only be made from indigenous, authorised grape varieties.
Almost a quarter of Germans under 30 regularly buy organically grown products. Within one year, the share of eco-conscious consumers grew from 14 to 23 percent.
Market researchers speak of the "Lifestyle of health and sustainability (LOHAS)", i.e. a lifestyle or consumer type oriented towards health and sustainability.
Facts worth knowing about organic wine
Which growing regions are there for organic wine?
The cultivation areas for organic wine do not differ from those for conventional cultivation. In principle, every winegrower can decide to produce organic wine.
However, you can quickly find out whether there is also an organic wine from your desired wine-growing region through the numerous organic wine websites.
Is there organic wine without alcohol?
As with conventional wine, there is also organic wine without alcohol. In the production process, there is no difference between wine with alcohol and wine without alcohol.
The alcohol in the wine is only removed at the end by a vacuum process. However, all aromatic substances remain in the wine.
So it has no influence on the actual taste of the wine.
However, you should know that alcohol-free wines do not automatically contain no alcohol at all, in Germany it is permitted that this variant may contain an alcohol content of up to 0.5%
