Buying and evaluation criteria for overhead showers
In this section, we would like to show you the decisive criteria that can be used in your decision to buy a shower head tailored to your needs. In the following, you will find four criteria with which you can compare the different overhead showers with each other:
In summary, these are:
The following section explains in more detail what makes up the individual criteria.
Size & shape
When choosing an overhead shower, the size and shape is a decisive purchase criterion. You should think in advance about how wide the shower spray and the associated surface area of the overhead shower should be. In addition, overhead showers are available in different shapes.
Which shape you ultimately choose is purely a matter of taste. However, you should match the size and shape of your showerhead to the size of your shower enclosure.
The overhead shower should have a diameter of at least 30 cm. Oval and round overhead showers are often installed as shower heads. Rectangular or square overhead showers are mainly offered for ceiling mounting.
Overhead showers are available in sizes from 15 to 80 cm.
An overhead shower is available in various material compositions. The material used often depends on the construction of the overhead shower. For example, a shower panel or shower column with different shower types may be composed of different materials.
First and foremost, however, you should pay attention to the material the shower is made of. Overhead showers can be made of plastic or metal.
It is also possible that the shower bar is made of a high-quality ABC plastic and the hand shower and overhead shower are made of metal.
The different use of materials in the various construction parts of a shower depend on how much this part is exposed to water. Since the shower head is exposed to water during the entire showering process, it is also predominantly made of metal.
The consideration of what type of shower head it should be should be well thought out before building the wet room. With an overhead shower, which is mounted under the ceiling, the supply lines disappear into the wall.
Subsequent installation is therefore a costly affair, as the wall has to be opened up again, which results in additional costs.
Integrated overhead showers are suitable for bathroom renovation or new construction.
In contrast, installing a rain shower in the form of a shower system is simpler and less costly. This is mounted on the wall like a conventional shower fitting and is often combined with a hand shower. The wall-mounting is done exactly where the supply pipes are already located.
When buying an overhead shower, it is important to consider the water consumption. This is calculated by the water flow rate and indicates how many litres of water flow through per minute.
The aspect of water consumption can easily be forgotten and can leave you with even higher costs that you haven't considered when investing in an expensive shower. However, you can save a lot with a showerhead that is designed to use little water.
You can save almost 2/3 of the cost with a showerhead that is designed to conserve water.
Here is an example:
Generally, 5 minutes in the shower costs €0.24. So if you shower for ten minutes with the same shower head, you pay twice as much and it costs just under 0.50 €. Many overhead showers use almost 20 litres per minute. If you shower for 5 minutes, it will cost you just under €0.80. A shower twice as long immediately costs €1.60.
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an overhead shower.
Overhead showers are also becoming increasingly popular for the home. However, there are a few things you should consider before buying one, as it is not just an ordinary shower head. In the following, we will show you what you should consider if you are interested in and want to buy an overhead shower.
What is special about an overhead shower and what advantages does it offer?
This type of shower head is particularly suitable for people who want a wellness experience in their home shower.
With a sufficiently large overhead shower, the whole body is covered by water and there is also enough space for two people.
However, a normal shower head should be purchased in addition to the overhead shower, as the water jet is not sufficient to wash shampoo out of the hair due to the low water pressure.
Especially with longer hair, the lower water pressure can make it difficult to wash out the shampoo.
If you consider a few aspects when buying your overhead shower, you can control water consumption well.
What types of overhead showers are there?
- Ceiling-mounted overhead shower
- Wall-mounted shower head
- Overhead shower
Below you will find all the advantages and disadvantages of the different models:
Overhead shower as ceiling installation
If you prefer a rain shower that is mounted under the ceiling, you can choose a square or round shower.
Both tall and short people can enjoy a rain shower to the full. The only important thing is to leave a certain distance between the showerhead and the head of the person taking the shower. Because it is precisely then that the water pelts the body softly, with a large surface area, and conveys the feeling of a rain shower.
The shower enclosure should be designed for a rain shower, so very dense water vapour forms even at lukewarm temperatures and rounds off the shower experience.
The installation of a rain shower requires that the water pipes run up to the ceiling. So if you already have only a normal shower, installing a ceiling-mounted overhead shower can be more complicated. After the conversion, however, you will certainly be rewarded with an elegant and soothing shower.
Wall-mounted overhead shower
As an alternative to the overhead shower with ceiling mounting, the shower can also be mounted on the wall. In this case, a small shower arm leads off the wall. The shower head is then firmly mounted on this arm and provides the necessary distance from the wall.
Both tall and short people can enjoy a rain shower to the full. The only important thing is to leave a certain distance between the showerhead and the head of the person taking a shower. Because it is precisely then that the water pelts the body softly, with a large surface area, and conveys the feeling of a rain shower.
As with the ceiling-mounted overhead shower, this shower requires that the water pipes be laid in the wall up to a certain height.
So if you already have only a normal shower, installing a ceiling-mounted shower head can be more complicated. After the conversion, however, you will certainly be rewarded by an elegant and soothing shower.
In contrast to the previous models, the overhead shower is the simplest model of all. In combination with an overhead shower, there are very good shower systems in which individual showers are available. The overhead shower is then usually attached to the shower rail.
So this is actually just a very large and simple shower head.
As mentioned above, the overhead shower can also be easily retrofitted and an existing shower rail attached. Another option is to purchase an entire system, e.g. with a hand shower, battery and bar.
You can replace your existing shower and thus upgrade it without spending a lot of money. This retrofit is particularly suitable for tenants who do not want to invest a large amount of money in a rented flat, but still want to increase the feel-good factor.
Who are overhead showers suitable for?
Rain showers are available in different sizes, shapes and spray types. In addition, the size of an overhead shower varies from 15 to over 60 cm.
You should therefore ask yourself in advance whether you are a person who jumps into the shower quickly just to wash or whether you are a so-called long showerer.
If you use the shower to relax, then an overhead shower is just right for you. Alternatively, there are also inexpensive versions that are less complicated to install and can be retrofitted.
How much does an overhead shower cost?
Overhead showers are available in different price segments. The prices depend on the quality, size and type of construction.
An overhead shower that can be easily retrofitted is priced from about 15 €. The overhead showers that can be easily retrofitted are usually cheaper than overhead showers for ceiling or wall mounting.
|Overhead shower with ceiling mounting||approx. 30 to 2,000 €|
|Overhead shower set||approx. 30 to 4,000 €|
|Wall-mounted overhead shower||approx. 30 to 1,800 €|
|Overhead shower||approx. 15 to 700€|
For overhead showers with a ceiling or wall mounting, prices start at around €30 and can go up to €4,000 depending on quality, size and shape.
How big are overhead showers as a rule?
If the shower head is too big, it can quickly cause flooding. However, you should also not choose a shower head that is too small, as otherwise the desired experience will not happen.
Appropriate models that are about 30 to 40 cm tall can already cover the entire body. In comparison, however, there are also larger rain showers for which the wet area should be sufficiently large. Such XXL overhead showers with a size of at least 60cm are also called rain showers
How high should an overhead shower be installed?
However, the height of approx. 220 cm is not fixed, and should be based on the size of the shower cubicle, as well as the size of the people using the shower.
The mixer tap for the shower is usually installed at the height of 110 to 115 cm. The hand shower, on the other hand, can be permanently mounted at a height of 120 to 150 cm, depending on the size of the person and their preferences.
If you want to vary the height of the hand shower, you can also mount it on a shower bar to adjust it flexibly in height.
How do I clean an overhead shower?
When buying an overhead shower, you should also make sure that the rain shower is equipped with silicone nubs. This ensures that limescale deposits can be removed more easily. If the limescale has not yet settled properly, you can usually simply rub it off the shower head.
What alternatives are there to overhead showers?
In addition to a normal overhead shower, many panels also have a waterfall effect and/or massage showers. Depending on the functions you want the shower panel to have, a shower panel can quickly appear large and clunky.
One advantage over ceiling or wall-mounted shower panels is that they are easy to install and require little work. The adjustment of the water pipes is therefore very simple or not necessary at all!
Another design type is a separate overhead shower, which is mounted on the wall above the shower panels. However, you should take into account the existing water pipes.
With a rain shower, you can bring the wellness experience directly into your home. Compared to an ordinary shower head, it offers the possibility of being showered by a soft and gentle rain shower. In addition, overhead showers are available from every price segment and can be selected in different designs and sizes as desired.
The decision as to which overhead shower should ultimately be used should also be matched to the shower enclosure. Here it is particularly important to consider the size and height of the shower cubicle, as well as the people using the shower. Once the rain shower has been selected according to these criteria, nothing stands in the way of the wellness feeling.
