Ingredients

Paraaminibenzoic acid, or Paba for short, is an aromatic hydrocarbon compound. The chemical formula of the weak organic acid is: C7H7NO2. The active substance is easily soluble in water, ether or ethanol.

You can often get Paba naturally from food.

At room temperature, the active ingredient is odourless and slightly yellowish in colour. This changes to brownish when exposed to light.

Paba is also a component of folic acid. Paba is found in large quantities in wheat germ, yoghurt, liver and brewer's yeast. In general, however, it can also be taken as a food supplement.

The specific ingredients consist of the following: dibasic calcium phosphate, stearic acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, cellulose and magnesium stearate.

Dosage

Large ranges are possible in the dosage of Paba. For example, 200 milligrams and up to 24 grams are within the normal range. However, the amounts should not be taken as a single intake, but should be spread over several doses throughout the day.

When taking tablets, it is recommended to take 1 tablet daily. Individual dosages should be discussed with the family doctor beforehand.

Effect

The vitamin is necessary for the production of folic acid. On the other hand, it also has antioxidant properties. For example, it can be used to treat autoimmune diseases. Redness and eczema could also be treated with it.

A deficiency of the vitamin can manifest itself in depression, headaches, fatigue and irritability.

It is often helpful to contact a doctor to find out if there are any deficiencies. Remember that there can always be other causes. That's why it's important to have your values checked every now and then.

Side effects

In normal doses, there are hardly any side effects. For safety and tolerance, however, you can check with a doctor before taking the medication.

In the case of an overdose, side effects such as diarrhoea, nausea and liver irritation can occur. Reddening of the skin or a reaction to sunscreen products are also possible side effects.

The side effects disappear when the Paba vitamin is discontinued or a normal dosage is taken.

Capsules / tablets / powder

Capsules are usually taken in a dose of about 400 milligrams of Paba. One capsule can be taken 1 - 2 times a day.

The most common form of intake is tablets. These are very highly dosed with up to 1000 milligrams of paba, so that taking one tablet daily is completely sufficient. This can be clarified with a specialist in each individual case.

The powder is taken with water and can be dissolved in it. In this case, you take about 500 milligrams of paba.

When and for whom is it useful to take Paba?

It makes sense to take Paba when your body shows clear signs of deficiency. Especially then you should help your body. Symptoms that could indicate this could be (7)

Which parts of the plant are used by Paba?

Depending on the dosage form, the composition of Paba can always be somewhat different. Here is a possible form of the ingredients, which is, however, not the same for all products.

  • Stearic acid
  • Dicalcium phosphate
  • Rice bran
  • Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Silicic acid (silicon dioxide)
  • Pharmaceutical glaze (from tree resin)

Before taking the product, you should always check which ingredients it contains in order to rule out possible allergic reactions. If you are unsure, it is advisable to consult a doctor in advance.

What are the possible side effects of Paba?

In individual cases, as with all other products, side effects may occur. Too high a dose of Paba should be avoided in any case, as otherwise allergies or reddening of the skin could occur.

In other cases, nausea may occur or, in more severe cases, liver irritation.

Some sunscreen products may also contain paba, which can cause an allergic reaction to sunscreen. This happens when the dose of paba is too high. (9)

What types of Paba are there?

Paba vitamin can be taken in many different forms. Which one you choose later is up to you. Each one is equally good. Only the strength sometimes plays a differentiating role.

There are basically three different forms (10)

  • Tablets
  • Capsules
  • Powder

The differences between the variants will be explained in the next paragraphs.

Paba in the form of tablets

In this case, the paba, which is available as granules or powder, is pressed into the form of a tablet. The advantages and disadvantages of this form of intake are shown in the following table.

Disadvantages
  • Necessary to take with water
  • Large tablets often difficult to take

Tablets have the most advantages and are therefore often available in pharmacies.

Paba in capsule form

  • Does not get stuck in the oesophagus
  • Easier to distinguish through coloured capsule shells
Disadvantages

As you can see, capsules also offer enormous advantages. The strength of the concentration is often not very different from that of tablets.

What alternatives are there to Paba?

Other B vitamins can also be used as an alternative to Paba. For example, vitamin B5 is quite suitable, as the vitamins of the B group are generally quite similar.
