The word partition probably first makes us think of screens or partition walls. However, the term encompasses a variety of constructions that divide a room into several areas. The variations of partition walls are surprisingly diverse.

We have done some research for you and summarise the respective types and their functions in this partition guide. Furthermore, we present partitions for the most popular purposes to make the purchase decision easier.

  • Partition walls are constructions that divide a room into one or more areas. Each partition fulfils a specific purpose, for example, privacy, noise protection or decoration.
  • In principle, partitions can be either suspended, erected or permanently installed. The respective desired function is often decisive here.
  • The variety of partitions can be overwhelming. That is why you should be aware of the criteria to be fulfilled before purchasing.

The Best Partition: Our Choices

Partitions: Purchase and evaluation criteria

Partitions come in a wide variety of forms. This variety can be overwhelming, so the following criteria should help in the decision-making process:

The relevance of each criterion depends on the purpose for which a partition is needed. Ultimately, you have to decide for yourself which criteria are important.

Depending on the purpose that a partition wall is to fulfil, a corresponding material comes into question. The place of use also plays a role.

The variety of materials can have an overwhelming effect, so sufficient thought and research is advisable.

Natural materials, such as wood or bamboo, are recommended for partitions in gardens. It should be noted that these are weatherproof. In the office, partitions should be used that offer noise protection. Panels made of mineral wool or foam can be used here. To ensure protection against viruses, Plexiglas is best suited. For room partitioning in the home, fabric is sometimes sufficient, depending on the desired effect.

To avoid being overwhelmed by the variety, it helps to have a list of the respective requirements for the partition wall. This will help with both the search and the selection.

Another important criterion is quick and easy assembly of the partition. Ideally, no drilling should be necessary for fastening, so that dismantling can also be carried out without any problems.

How simple the assembly must be ultimately depends on the individual requirements and the craftsmanship.

Most partitions consist of panels with feet, so the room divider only needs to be set up. Stand-up feet or other assembly sets are sometimes supplied. For partitions that are used in the garden, digging is sometimes required first. Alternatively, stones can be used for stabilisation.

How easy the assembly must be ultimately depends on the individual requirements and the craftsmanship. Fortunately, there is something for everyone.

Partition walls can certainly be used as long-term installations. In most cases, however, they are needed as temporary and flexible room dividers. That's why it should be easy to change the space.

Partitions create new spaces, especially in open-plan offices. The required sizes or shapes of these partitions can always change, for example, when new employees join or a restructuring is carried out. That's why the panels of the partitions should be easy to separate and reconnect.

For the partition wall at home, a high degree of mobility is also advantageous, because needs or simply personal taste change here too.

Partitions used outdoors in particular should be able to withstand a wide variety of weather conditions. However, a certain robustness is also desirable for use at home or in the office.

In the case of partitions for the garden, this feature is advertised anyway. For indoor partitions, a little more research may be needed regarding robustness.

The location of a partition can change, depending on changing needs. Therefore, assembly and disassembly should not only be easy in terms of craftsmanship. The quality or function should also not be affected. Openings or fixtures on panels must be able to withstand multiple composition. The same applies to the material from which the partition is made.

Partitions: Frequently asked questions and answers

Before purchasing a partition wall, certain questions always come up. We have collected these together and will answer them as best we can below.

What is a partition suitable for?

A partition is a construction that divides a room into two or more areas. This is why there is often talk of room dividers. These come in a wide range of variants, as partitions fulfil different purposes, for example:

  • Privacy screen
  • Noise protection
  • Hygiene protection
  • Fire protection

Partitions are particularly suitable for privacy protection, for example in the garden. They are also used indoors, for example to break up kitchens. In restaurants, room dividers usually serve the purpose of privacy, but also of decoration.

A partition is a construction that divides a room into two or more areas.

In the office, partitions allow the creation of sub-areas that are not only visually but usually also acoustically separated from each other. This increases concentration and ensures data protection.

Partition walls can also serve as fire protection and even then still have a decorative effect. Of course, you can also use a partition wall all by itself for beautification purposes.

Before buying a partition, you should think carefully about what it will be used for. There is something for every requirement, but a targeted search will make the decision easier.

What types of partitions are there?

By now it is clear that partitions are available in various variations that serve different purposes. We have compiled some partition wall cards and their advantages and disadvantages in a table.

Type Advantages Disadvantages
Screen privacy protection, easy to erect, foldable, easy to move, available at low cost, very decorative rarely sound-absorbing, does not provide fire protection
Partition wall privacy protection, partly sound-absorbing, low cost not foldable, higher weight, not very decorative
Hanging room divider decorative, privacy protection, partly sound-absorbing fixed and more costly installation
Partition wall system privacy protection, sound-absorbing, fire protection fixed installation, high cost

For reasons of clarity, we have only roughly subdivided the types. Partition walls can also be distinguished from each other in other ways.

What does a partition wall cost?

This question cannot be answered so simply. Depending on the type, the sizes, materials and of course the manufacturing process vary. All these factors determine the value, so even price ranges are only a guide. The table below shows price categories in which the respective partition type is most commonly represented.

Type price range
Partition for the car 20-50 €
Screens 100-200 €
Hanging partition 20-50 €
Screen 50-100 €

This table is only intended to give a rough impression, so not all types of partitions are included.

What alternatives are there to a partition wall?

Indeed, the partition itself is an alternative, namely to the permanently installed wall. However, there are other ways to divide a room.

Type Description
Curtains Curtains are not only suitable for windows, but also for dividing an area. Often these only provide visual protection, but there are also models that offer noise protection or even fire protection.
Shelves These not only offer a visual division, but also provide additional storage space. Furthermore, the overall size can be adapted to the available space, as you simply assemble individual modules as needed and desired.

All other alternatives are up to individual creativity. With a little craftsmanship, there are no limits.

How do I build a partition wall myself?

If you don't want an "off-the-peg" room layout, you can build a partition yourself. You can make it easy for yourself or challenge your craftsmanship. We have put together some ideas below and briefly explained how to implement them.

Wooden screen

For this you need wooden panels, hinges, screws, copper pipes, industrial glue and screws.

The wooden panels can first be painted, if desired. Then connect them with ideally foldable hinges. For more stability, small copper tubes can be glued to the lower ends of the panels. If industrial glue is used here, please wear gloves.

Pallet partition

This can easily be built from Euro pallets, industrial glue or hinges and wooden panels.

Sand and paint the pallets if desired. Join using industrial glue (don't forget gloves) or hinges. Additional wooden boards can be added as feet for the partition.

Macrame curtain

Rope, round wooden rod, curtain suspension, screws, dowels and fabric tape are used here.

Cut the ropes to size and tape the joints. Put the loops around the round rod and tighten them. Create rows of knots according to your wishes and knowledge. Mount on curtain suspension and place.

For the curtain, you should definitely have previous knowledge of Macrame so that the instructions can be followed. The partition wall made of pallets requires a little craftsmanship, but can still be built by amateurs. Basically, you should not be afraid of a little effort if you want to build a partition yourself.

The term partition covers a variety of room dividers. All variants ultimately serve to divide a room into subareas. When selecting the type of partition, it depends on the purpose to be fulfilled. Room dividers are mainly used as privacy screens with a decorative secondary function. Our guidebook has shown that sound insulation and driving safety in cars can also be ensured by a partition.

Before purchasing, you should therefore first be aware of the criteria that need to be met. Where will the partition be used? What functions should the partition have? Once these questions have been answered, it is best to draw up a list. This will help both in the search and in the purchase decision. There is something for everyone.
