In homeopathy, passion flower has been prescribed for several decades for sleep problems, restlessness and cramps. It can also be used to treat nervousness, anxiety, nervous gastrointestinal disorders, mild nervous heart complaints and to lower blood pressure.

However, there is little clinical research on its actual efficacy in humans. For example, studies have shown that passionflower is just as effective as oxazepam for anxiety disorders and that the subjective feeling of tiredness increases when taking Passiflora. Otherwise, relief of anxiety, restlessness and convulsions could only be proven with the help of animal experiments.

Decision: What types of passion flower tea are there and which is the right one for me?

Passion flower tea always uses the herb of the passion flower, the Passiflorae Herba. Therefore, in the following we distinguish between passion flower herb (loose) cut and ground passion flower herb: Basically, we distinguish between these types of passion flower tea:

  • Tea made from cut passion flower herb
  • Tea made from ground passion flower herb

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. In this way, we want to help you find the most suitable passion flower tea for you.

Passion flower herb (loose) cut

This is the above-ground part of the passion flower, which is first dried and then cut into small parts. These plant parts can be leaves and stems as well as flowers.

  • Already available for a low price
  • largely sold in resealable bags
  • tea egg is necessary, but is also more lucrative than tea bags, which have to be used with ground herb
  • wider range of offers
  • Some offers are more than twice as expensive as for ground herb
  • tea egg or tea bags necessary
  • for the same amount, cut herb has to steep comparatively longer to extract the same amount of active ingredient

Ground passion flower herb

Here, too, the above-ground part of the passion flower is processed by drying and grinding it.

  • Smaller price range
  • with the same quantity, more space-saving and therefore more suitable for travelling
  • better transfer of active ingredient into the tea water
  • The cheapest offer of ground herb is more expensive than the cheapest offer of cut herb
  • Extra tea bags have to be bought
  • Tea egg cannot be used
  • Smaller choice of offers

Alternatively, you can of course buy pre-filled filter bags, but these are rarely available as a mono-preparation of passionflower, but usually only as a combined preparation with other herbal remedies.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate passion flower teas

In the following we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate passion flower teas. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective product. In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Quantity
  • Cultivation
  • Country of origin
  • Combination with other substances

Below you can read what each criterion is about and find out why it makes sense for you to buy a product based on the criteria or not.

To start with the most important thing: The amount of passion flower herb you should buy naturally depends on your personal needs. So it is best to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many times a day or a week do I want to drink the passion flower tea?
  • Over what period of time do I want to drink the tea? Only for a few days or over several weeks?
  • Am I the only consumer of passion flower tea in my household?

When making your decision, bear in mind that there are usually quantity discounts. This means that it is cheaper for you to buy a large quantity once than several smaller quantities. If you already know that you like the taste of passion flower tea and that you will drink it often and/or for a longer period of time, you should buy a larger quantity (250g or more).

Otherwise, it would be advisable to buy a smaller quantity (30g to 100g). Basically, the range of available quantities of passion flower tea is from 30g to 2kg. On Amazon you can find everything from 60g to 2kg, but 30g bags are only available in pharmacies or drugstores.

Another important criterion is whether Passiflorae Herba is an organic product. The best way to tell is by looking for an organic seal of quality. This indicates that the plants used come from controlled organic cultivation.

Be aware that some suppliers make statements such as "from controlled cultivation". This does not mean that the product is organic.

Country of origin

The Passiflora Incarnata is nowadays cultivated in the USA, Asia and Southern Europe. If agriculture according to EU standards and/or the shortest possible transport routes to protect the environment are important to you, you should pay attention to the country of origin of the passion flower. It should be noted, however, that not every manufacturer provides information about the country of origin.

Combination with other substances

In short, the answer to this question depends on the desired effect you would like to have. Earlier in this article, under Alternatives to Passionflower Tea, similar medicinal herbs have already been listed. These are often combined with passion flower and sold as combination preparations. You are probably wondering now why herbs with similar active ingredients are mixed at all.

The reason for this is that combination preparations have a stronger effect. So if you want to be on the safe side or if you have a particularly serious complaint, you should think about buying a combination tea made from different medicinal herbs.
