Buying and evaluation criteria for petrol water pumps

If you are not familiar with petrol water pumps, you may be overwhelmed by the variety of offers. However, to prevent this from happening, we present the following most important buying criteria and explain them to you in brief.

Once you have read through these carefully, you will know which key figures to look out for and what they mean when making your purchase.

Performance

The performance of a petrol water pump depends on the delivery head and flow rate.

The greater the distance between the water source and the tapping point, the higher the pump's performance must be.

Delivery rate

Depending on the model, the delivery rate can be between 6,500 and 80,000 litres per hour.

The top models, however, are mainly intended for professional use and therefore cost a lot.

Delivery head

The delivery head indicates how high the water can be conveyed. This refers to the distance between the water level and the outflow of the water.

Average petrol water pumps have a delivery head of 15-35 metres.

A rule of thumb is that 10 metres of head requires 10 bar. However, you should make sure that you always have one bar in reserve, just to be on the safe side.

Speed

The speed indicates the maximum speed at which the paddle wheel can rotate.

Models available on the market usually have the following speeds:

  • 9.000 rpm
  • 3.600 rpm
  • 3.000 rpm

The higher the speed, the more pressure the pump can build up.

Note: The higher the speed, the more noise the pump generates.

Suction height

The suction height describes how high the water can be sucked in. It is calculated from the water level to the inlet opening of the pump.

The most common models have a suction height of 4-8 metres. However, 6-7 metres is usually sufficient.

Weight

One of the best features of the petrol water pump is its flexibility and mobility. To ensure that this advantage is not lost, attention should be paid to the weight of the pump.

To be able to transport the pump without problems, make sure that it weighs between 10 and 20 kilograms. Anything else will quickly become unwieldy.

Tank size

A petrol water pump is not suitable for continuous operation.

The larger the size of the tank, the longer the pump will run without you having to refill it with petrol.

Modern petrol water pumps on the market have a tank size of 0.5 - 4 litres.

With a 3 - 4 litre tank you can expect an average running time of 8-9 hours.

2-stroke vs. 4-stroke

You can choose between 2-stroke and 4-stroke petrol water pump engines.

So that you know the advantages and disadvantages of both, and can make a better decision, we list them here:

The 2-stroke engine has the following characteristics:

Advantages
  • more spontaneous, starts faster
  • oil refilling is easy
Disadvantages
  • Scent

The 4-stroke engine, on the other hand, has these advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages
  • quieter
  • lower consumption
Disadvantages
  • regular maintenance, oil change

However, due to the lower emission values of a 4-stroke engine, most manufacturers are switching to it for the most part.

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a petrol water pump

Now you are well informed about the most important buying criteria. Further questions you might have during or after your purchase of a petrol water pump have been collected and answered here.

What is special about a petrol water pump and what advantages does it offer?

A petrol water pump is a pump that works with a petrol-powered combustion engine and can transport large amounts of water in a short time.

The higher the pressure, the faster the water flows.

The paddle wheel, which is driven by the engine, moves the water. The resulting vacuum sucks in the water with a suction hose and transports it through the pump to the delivery hose.

The fan ensures that the pump does not overheat.

Because the petrol water pump is not tied to a power supply due to its mode of operation, it can be used flexibly and is easy to transport.

What types of water petrol pumps are there?

In addition to the usual functions that all petrol water pumps fulfil, there are usually different properties that distinguish the pumps from one another.

The different types that exist are as follows:

  • with wheel set
  • with low oil stop
  • with check valve
  • with steel frame
  • Clear water pump
  • Clear water pump

Petrol water pumps with a set of wheels have the advantage that they can be easily transported despite a high weight.

Pumps with a low oil stop switch off automatically when the oil level is too low. This prevents damage to the engine.

A water pump with a non-return valve prevents the water from flowing back when the pump is switched off. The advantage is that the pump is always ready for use and does not have to wait until the water is sucked in.

A petrol water pump with a steel frame can have both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages
  • safe transport is possible
  • the pump is better protected
  • easier to set up
  • increases stability
Disadvantages
  • the pump is heavier
  • the pump is more unwieldy

A distinction can also be made between dirty water pumps and clear water pumps.

  1. Clear waterpumps can only pump clear water. Otherwise, the pump may break down.
  2. Dirty water pumps, on the other hand, can also transport dirty water in which flotsam or small items are floating. They have a built-in basket, which prevents the objects from getting into the motor.

However, there is also a suction strainer attachment as an adapter. With this you can also pump dirty water with a clear water pump.

For whom are petrol water pumps suitable?

Petrol water pumps can be used wherever water needs to be moved from one place to another.

They can therefore be used to pump out an excavation pit, the cellar or even the pool. But they are also very popular for fetching water from a river or pond.

However, it is particularly useful to use water pumps in remote areas where there is no electricity supply. For example, they can be used to irrigate fields or to transport water into the forest.

Petrol water pumps are also often used by the fire brigade, as they are often called out to flooded areas that do not have electricity due to the flooding.

What hose connections are available for a petrol water pump?

When selecting the hose connections, you should consider which hoses you already have and what you want to use the petrol water pump for.

Roughly speaking, a distinction is made between two different types of hoses: large-diameter and small-diameter hoses.

diameter use
large for large amounts of water: Filling / pumping out pools, pumping out basements
small for garden irrigation

Petrol water pumps are not compatible with chlorine or other chemicals. So only add them to your pool water after you have already pumped it into the pool.

Note, however, that you will need the appropriate adapters for garden watering equipment such as sprinklers or sprinkler heads. Make sure you check beforehand whether they are already included or whether you need to buy some extra. With these adapters, it is also possible to supply several devices with water at the same time.

What are the alternatives to a petrol water pump?

The best alternative to a petrol water pump is an electric water pump. We explain its advantages and disadvantages here:

Advantages
  • lighter
  • quieter
Disadvantages
  • needs electricity

Another alternative for a petrol water pump is a deep well pump. This has a greater suction height and is therefore, as the name suggests, best suited to pumping water from a deep well or cistern.

How do I maintain and care for my petrol water pump?

In principle, a petrol water pump requires very little maintenance. However, you should always pay attention to the instructions in the user manual.

Also make sure that there is always enough oil, otherwise this will damage the engine. Once a year, you should also change all the oil.

Also clean the housing regularly and check that all connections are tight. If not, replace the leaking seals with new ones.

Also, make sure that the water pump is not exposed to frost. Find a suitable place where you can store the pump frost-free in winter.

Conclusion

Do you live in an area where there is often a power cut due to flooding? Are you looking for a way to water your garden or do you just want to pump out your pool but have no electricity in your garden? Then a petrol water pump is exactly what you need. It can be set up flexibly anywhere and is not tied to a power socket.

Depending on the device and performance, you can pump up to 30,000 litres per hour with a delivery head of up to 30 metres. Thanks to various adapters and connections, the petrol water pumps can be used flexibly for up to several hours at a time.

If you want to use them to pump out your cellar or an excavation pit, make sure that you have a dirty water pump. Unlike clear water pumps, these have an integrated basket that protects the motor.
