The Best Photo Frame: Our Choices

Buying and rating criteria for photo frames

When buying photo frames, there are a few simple criteria you should consider. The goal is, of course, to find the perfect frame for your pictures. The criteria you should keep in mind when choosing a product and making your decision are described in the following section. For the purchase decision and an easier differentiation of the individual products, a few criteria should be considered more closely in advance:

Size or dimensions

The first question you should ask yourself is how big the picture you want to frame is. The standard sizes are 10x15, 13x18 and 15x20 centimetres. The first number represents the width and the second the length of the frame.

For oversized photo prints, for example posters or custom-made prints, you should rather not look at the usual sizes. But there are also enough products in the right size for this. If your picture does not completely fill the frame, a passe-partout can be the solution. You should make sure that this is included with the product. This is not always the case.

The size of the frame is also important to help you plan your home decoration. This allows you to choose the right place for your new decoration at your leisure. Make sure you choose the right frame size for your picture.

Photo frame material and colour

A frequently used material for picture frames is medium density fibreboard, or MDF for short. You will often find this quite solid and smoothly cut frame in the colours black or white. However, there is also the option of a wood look.

In this case, the frame can be seen in natural wooden colours. The grain of the surface shows a natural shape. The counterpart is a frame made of metal, which is usually painted silver. Here, there are often only a few colour options to choose from. This is completely different with plastic frames. In most cases, you can choose from a wide range of colours and live out your decorative streak in all the colours of the rainbow.

Another purchase criterion is the way in which the picture frame is mounted or fixed. Many products already have a device in the form of hanging loops. You should make sure that the suspension is provided once on the long side and once on the wide side. This makes vertical and horizontal mounting possible, which allows you to design your room in a more versatile way.

A third possible mounting method is the fold-out support leg. This is located on the back. This allows you to place your framed photos on any surface, such as your desk, shelf, window sill, etc., without any problems. It is always important to check that this is possible both horizontally and vertically.

Occasion / intended use

What purpose should your new photo frame serve? This is a question you should ask yourself before buying. As we all know, tastes differ. As a gift, as a decoration in your own home or are you planning a collage? Generally speaking, the simpler the frame, the easier it is to decorate for the person in question.

However, you are also welcome to come up with creative ideas where you can deviate from conventional products. This creates variety and sometimes makes your pictures stand out more in the room. Therefore, always think carefully about the person and the occasion (birthday, wedding, etc.) for which you choose the photo frame.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about photo frames answered in detail

The following section will explain frequently asked questions about photo frames in more detail. This will allow you to delve deeper into the topic and find the right product for you.

What are the different sizes and types of photo frames?

The most common sizes are 10x15, 13x18 and 15x20 cm. Of course, you can also buy larger or smaller frames. However, especially with large photo frames, you may have to do a lot of work to assemble them (e.g. drilling). A smaller version is more space-saving, but the standard size of a photo usually does not fit. The type of frame can vary greatly.

From smoothly polished wood, silver lacquered frames made of metal or colourful plastic. The weight often differs only slightly from the type of material. Always similar is mostly the front protective glass and the suspension with built-in hook.

What does a photo frame cost?

The prices in this product category vary rather little. The decisive factor is whether you buy one or several photo frames (sets). The third option is to buy a creative frame (wedge picture frame, collage wooden frame, etc.), where you have space for only one or several pictures. In the table below, you can see rough prices for current products and categories.

Price range Available sizes / products
Single Edition (8 - 16 €) 10 x 15 cm, 13 x 18 cm, 15 x 20 cm
Picture Frame Set (from 17 €) 10 x 15 cm
Creative Idea (10 - 25 €) 10 x 15 cm, collage, wedge picture frame

How can I hang the photo frame without drilling?

You can now hang photo frames without drilling holes or the like. The options listed below are intended to show you how you can easily mount your photo frames without any manual skills. In the following, we have provided you with 3 tips & tricks that may help you.

  1. Option: Knock a nail into the wall as a suspension. Because the hooks are usually already attached to the frame, installation is done in just a few steps. All you need is a hammer and a nail.
  2. Option: If you don't want a hole in the wall, so-called adhesive nails are a good solution. Stick them to the place where you want to hang your picture. As soon as the adhesive strip is firmly attached to the wall, you can open the fixture inside and start decorating.
  3. Option: If you want to use the hooks that are already on the picture frame without making holes in the wall, use adhesive hooks. These work almost exactly like the adhesive nails just described. However, you stick a hook on the wall that will ultimately hold your picture.

If you don't like any of these options, you can always put your photo frames on a shelf or desk. They usually look just as good there.

Can I make my own photo frame?

For one thing, you can make a frame out of old household objects (e.g. clothes hangers). On the other hand, there are also useful ideas on how to create a DIY photo frame for your own decoration out of clay paper and wood. So be creative and use things that you no longer need in your home for everyday life

When buying picture frames, there are now many different designs, sizes and creative ideas. Often, a timeless and simple style is chosen in order to find a simple solution for every room or occasion. Nevertheless, there are also original ideas in addition to conventional products. If you want to frame several pictures at once and decorate them in the room, you should opt for a set. These are the cheapest option due to the high quantity.

Whatever you decide, always make sure that your frame is the right size. Also think about which design suits you and your living environment. And last but not least, you should always find out which mounting options (hanging / standing) the respective photo frame offers.
