The colourless to yellowish solid is considered the main alkaloid of black pepper and is also called "Piper nigrum".

It is a natural substance that can also be produced synthetically. Piperine is produced when ethanol is extracted from black pepper and then crystallised.

How does piperine work?

Piperine has a comprehensive effect on our brain. Piperine intervenes in the control of the calcium flow in the body and thus indirectly influences cell growth and the release of neurotransmitters, which contributes to an improvement in the nerve activity of the brain.

Piperine is involved in the production of neurotransmitters in the body because it controls the flow of calcium. Calcium is an important substance in promoting the growth of nerve cells and the release of neurotransmitters. Accordingly, piperine can contribute to the synchronisation of neuronal nerve activity.

A pepper seed usually contains no more than five percent piperine. In individual cases, up to ten percent of the active ingredient has been detected.

Piperine can also be extracted from pepper sticks. However, this contains only one to two percent piperine.

Can piperine help with weight loss?

There are first study results on this question. In Korea, scientists have found out that there might indeed be a connection and that piperine inhibits the formation of new fat cells.

Thus, piperine is being talked about as an effective help for obesity.

Research has also been done in India. In animal experiments, it was found that piperine significantly improved fat mass and cholesterol levels in overweight rats.

What exactly is the connection between piperine and curcumin?

The most valuable ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. However, it has the disadvantage of not dissolving in water.

This makes it more difficult for curcumin to be absorbed. Once the substance has been absorbed, it is only present in the bloodstream for a short time. These facts stand for poor bioavailability.
