The Best Pizza pan: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an electric pan

What is a pizza pan and how does it work?

A pizza pan is the combination of a saucepan, frying pan and electric grill. The difference to conventional pans is that multi pans have their own heating plate in the base of the pan.

This means that no external heat source is needed. The only thing you need is a power socket to heat the heating coil in the bottom of the pan.

Most pizza pans have a temperature regulator to set the desired temperature. This is where the name of the all-rounder comes from, because you can prepare a wide variety of dishes.

But it's not just the thermostat that helps you set the temperature. The electric frying pan has an integrated indicator light. This shows you when the set temperature has been reached. And then you can start cooking.

The multi pans are available in different sizes and shapes. For example, you can choose between round or square, large or small, coated or uncoated.

Other features of the pizza pan are: Heat-insulated handles and lids with or without steam release. You should note that not every manufacturer offers all features.

Who is the party pan suitable for?

The electric frying pan is suitable for everyone. Its multifunctional applicability and flexibility make it one of the all-round talents in the kitchen. Whether as a practical cooker substitute, for example when there is a lack of space (student flat) or as a mobile kitchen substitute when camping - the multi-pan is a constant companion when it comes to cooking.

Whether young or old - thanks to its easy handling, anyone can use it. Due to its size, the electric frying pan is also sought after by singles, families or at parties. The electric frying pans are child's play to operate and are a lot of fun to use correctly.

How much does a pizza pan cost?

There is a huge selection of pizza pans on the market. Therefore, the price range for the different pans is also very wide. A major cost factor is the choice of materials.

If you're looking for an inexpensive option, aluminium is your best bet. Cast iron, ceramic or stainless steel increase the price of electric frying pans.

Size, features, performance, coating and accessories also play a big role in the question of cost.

The rule here is: the higher the quality, the more expensive a pizza pan is

If you are looking for a cheap party pan that you might not want to use too often, you can find offers from 20 to 30 €. From €40 to €50, you can get a pizza pan with extras.

However, if you are looking for high-quality electric pans, you will have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. If you're looking for quality, you'll have to budget between €150 and €250.

Tips

  • Find out more about the product you have chosen
  • Compare individual products
  • Look at the reviews
  • Get advice from professional staff
  • Also pay attention to the manufacturer's warranty

What surface should you use to ensure a firm footing?

Since electric frying pans allow you to choose where you want to cook, it is necessary to make sure that the surface is safe. This should be heat-resistant, as the heating coil is located on the underside of the frying surface and the heat can spread downwards. In the worst case, there is a risk of fire!

You should also make sure that the pizza pan has a firm base. Fix it so that you can be sure that it cannot tip or fall. Otherwise it can cause burns.

Decision: What types of pizza pans are there and which one is right for you?

The decision to buy an electric pizza pan depends on various factors. Your needs or plans play a big role here. Whether you want to cook for a large family or a single household, there are many different types of electric party pans.

The pan manufacturers have built up a large portfolio to satisfy almost every need of the customer.

The biggest difference in electric pans is the material. There are electric pans made of

  • Aluminium
  • Cast iron
  • Stainless steel

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. We want to help you find the pizza pan that is best for you.

Aluminium pans

Aluminium pans are the cheapest version of electric pans. They are very popular because of their good heat conductivity. This allows for even baking and frying.

Advantages
  • favourable
  • good heat conductivity
  • even result
Disadvantages
  • longer time to heat up
  • deformations possible
  • stay hot longer after frying

However, they take longer to heat up. In addition, aluminium pans tend to deform if the temperature is too high. They hold the temperature for a certain time and do not cool down immediately.

Cast iron pans

Cast iron pans can be heated very well. However, due to the thickness of the material, they need a longer time to reach the desired temperature. The heat storage is particularly good and the even heat release is guaranteed.

Advantages
  • even heat release
  • good heat storage
  • scratch-resistant
  • very heat-resistant
Disadvantages
  • longer time to heat up
  • more expensive

Cast iron pans are very scratch-resistant and can withstand high temperatures. However, these models are somewhat more expensive than aluminium pizza pans.

Stainless steel pans

Advantages
  • Non-stick coating
  • easy to clean
  • very heat-resistant
Disadvantages
  • more expensive

Stainless steel pans have a very high heat resistance. A ceramic coating also makes these pans very non-stick. This makes it difficult for food to burn and the pan is easier to clean after eating than the aluminium or cast iron models.

However, at up to €200, stainless steel pans are the most expensive electric pans.

Type Price
Aluminium pan 10-80€uro
Cast iron pan 5-120€uro
Stainless steel pan 40-200€uro

Buying criteria: Use these criteria to compare and rate pizza pans

In the following, we show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate pizza pans. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective appliance.

In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Material
  • Coating
  • Size
  • Shape
  • Power
  • Pan depth
  • Thermostat
  • Accessories

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a device based on the criteria or not.

Material

The material has an influence on the frying properties, taste and energy consumption of your pan. You can usually find pizza pans made of cast iron, aluminium or stainless steel in the shops.

We have already presented the advantages and disadvantages of the materials in the decision section. The most important difference is the price. If you only want to use your pizza pan sometimes for a party, for example, an aluminium pan is certainly sufficient for you.

If, on the other hand, you are often on the road and want to use your electric pan for cooking, or if you often celebrate parties where the pan is to be used, you are certainly better off with a more durable pan made of cast iron or stainless steel.

Coating

You can find pizza pans with or without a coating. The coating is usually made of Teflon or ceramic.

This coating is not absolutely necessary to create delicious dishes with your electric pan. However, it does make preparing food a lot easier. The coating prevents food from burning easily and sticking to the frying surface. In addition, cleaning a coated pan is much easier than cleaning an uncoated pan.

Size

The standard diameter of a pizza pan is 42cm. However, there are many larger models and also a few smaller ones.

Which size is best for you depends on your own needs. For example, you should take into account how much space you have available in the kitchen and how many people you usually want to prepare food for in the electric pan.

If mobility is important to you because you want to use the pizza pan for camping, for example, it may be worth buying a slightly smaller pan.

Shape

Essentially, you will find electric pans on the market as square pans or as round pans. The round shape has a larger capacity, whereas the square shape can be used to prepare several dishes at the same time.

Performance

The power of a pizza pan usually ranges from 1500Watt to 2000Watt. The higher the power of your pan, the faster you can prepare your food.

With more power, it is also easier to prepare larger quantities of food at the same time - always assuming your pan has the capacity to do so.

Pan depth

The higher the rim, the more versatile you can use your pan. You can prepare more voluminous dishes with a high rim and thus fill a large number of people.

If you only cook for a few people and have little space, you should get a shallower electric pan.

Thermostat

The thermostat allows you to manually control the temperature of your pan. The maximum temperature of a pizza pan is usually between 200 and 300 degrees Celsius.

You can find pans with a stepped thermostat or an infinitely variable thermostat in the shops. The more finely you can regulate the temperature of your pan, the easier it is to use.

Accessories

The price of electric pans is also determined by the accessories that the manufacturer includes. Most pans come standard with a shatterproof and fireproof glass lid. The glass lid is often equipped with a steam vent.

In addition, the pan can be equipped with one or more handles. The handles make it easier and more comfortable to move the pan even when it is hot without burning yourself. Cool-touch handles made of stainless steel are particularly popular.

Some pans also have feet. This allows them to be placed on almost any surface without risk of fire.

Beware of lower-priced models! The feet are usually narrow and not robust enough.

Facts worth knowing about electric pans

How do I clean and care for the electric frying pan?

Most electric frying pans have a coating. Therefore, you should take care to treat and clean electric frying pans gently. The non-stick coating is very vulnerable and can be damaged quickly.

How to avoid damage:

  • Clean the pizza pan with clear warm water
  • Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or "pot scrapers"
  • For light soiling, wipe with a soft dishcloth
  • For burnt-on food residues, boil some water and the residues will dissolve by themselves
  • Use a "wooden spoon" or plastic when cooking

In principle, extremely gentle cleaning is important for electric pans. Due to the sensitive heating element in the base of the pan, it is necessary to clean and maintain the appliances carefully and according to instructions.

What should be observed when using the pizza pan?

Before each use, check that the power plug is secure and does not wobble. The plug can be a weak point with electric frying pans. Therefore, always make sure that the plug is in the correct position before switching on the appliance.

The heating elements in the base of the pizza pan not only radiate heat upwards, but also towards the base. Therefore, when using the electric multi-pan, you must always ensure that it is placed on a heat-resistant surface. Ceramic or stone tiles are particularly suitable here.

How do you make a pizza in a pan?

With the electric pizza pan, making pizza is no longer a problem. The Germans' favourite Italian dish can also be made quickly and easily in a pan. Thanks to the five-centimetre depth of the pan and its diameter of forty centimetres or more, the pizza is a highlight on the table.

Did you know that the now world-famous Pizza Margherita was created in 1889?

The year 1989 is considered an important milestone in the history of pizza: In that year, Raffaele Esposito, a well-known Neapolitan pizzaiolo was invited by Queen Margherita to cook a variant of the pizza he had developed at the royal court. This evolved into the now popular Pizza Margherita.

Prepare and mix the ingredients for your pizza dough. The only thing to remember about the electric pizza pans is that you need to cook the dough on both sides. After about 10 minutes, turn the dough in the pan and start topping it as you like.

How do I make a pizza in the pan?

These are the ingredients you need for a perfect pizza dough:

Dry ingredients Other ingredients
250g wheat flour 140 ml lukewarm water
1 pinch salt 10g fresh yeast
1 pinch sugar 1 tbsp olive oil

And this is how you proceed:

  1. Crumble the fresh yeast and dissolve it in lukewarm water.
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients together
  3. Make a well in the middle and pour the olive oil and yeast water into it
  4. Now mix everything together first with a large wooden spoon, then with your hands and knead until a nice dough is formed.
  5. Put the dough on the work surface and knead for a long time (approx. 10 min)
  6. Cover the dough in a bowl with a tea towel and place in a warm place. Now let the dough rise until it has doubled in volume - this will take at least 1 hour.
  7. After the dough has risen nicely, shape it into a ball and flatten it into a pizza with your hands.
  8. You can now let the dough rise in a pan for about 20 minutes.
  9. Fry on both sides
  10. Now add your desired ingredients and bake until the dough is nice and golden brown.
