The best play tower: Our picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a play tower

Why should you buy a play tower?

Especially nowadays, when children have access to smartphones and tablets at an early age, it is particularly important to offer our offspring a good change from a sedentary lifestyle.

Your child's motor skills can be stimulated by getting a play tower, for example.

Such play equipment presents various challenges, such as climbing, balancing and shimmying. On top of that, they provide a lot of fun in movement.

In this short video, Prof. Froböse explains how important exercise is for children.

From what age can children play with play towers?

Most manufacturers state that play towers are not suitable for children under 36 months. From the age of three, children can start playing with play towers that have a platform height of 1.20m.

Older children can also have fun with 1.50m high play towers.

In general, the use of the play tower should always be enjoyed under adult supervision.

Did you know that playgrounds were invented in the 19th century?

Leading child psychologists called for places that would challenge the child's development through play. These games were not only intended to provide exercise, but also to teach manners and a sense of justice.

How is a play tower attached?

The most common method of fixing a play tower is to use ground anchors. Often these have to be ordered separately, as you will find out in the article description.

There are different types, such as ground anchors, angle anchors or H-anchors. They can also be bought online in sets and on average eight to ten pieces are needed to assemble a play tower.

For even better stability, you can opt for concreting the ground anchors. Since working with concrete is quite dusty, you should use a protective mask while doing so.

What does a play tower cost?

The cost of a play tower varies depending on the number of components of the tower, but also greatly depending on the manufacturer. In the table below, the price range for the different types of play towers has been listed.

Number of components Price
2 170€-400€
3 175€-500€
3+ 635€-3000€

What alternatives are there to play towers?

An alternative to a play tower would be, for example, to buy the individual elements of a play tower, such as only a slide, only a swing or a sandbox, if you don't have so much space available.

Similar to play towers, climbing frames are also very suitable for outdoor play. Of course, there are also different types, both simpler ones that only consist of a climbing wall and more complex ones that consist of several elements.

Otherwise, you can opt for bouncy castles. As the name suggests, bouncy castles are designed for bouncing. However, many models are also equipped with other play options, such as slides, tunnels, climbing walls, pool and ball pool.

A space-saving way to promote children's motor skills are wall bars. These can also be set up in the children's room.

Smaller playhouses can also keep your children occupied for some time and offer many opportunities for imaginative play and letting off steam.

Indoor alternatives can also be so-called children's sports corners. Their dimensions and weight capacity are much smaller than those of play towers. This play equipment is suitable for children from the age of 1 and is available in many elements and colour combinations.

Of course, you can also build a play tower yourself instead of buying a ready-made one and let your creativity (or that of your child/children) run free.

Decision: What types of play towers are there and which one is right for you?

Play towers differ according to the number of components and their combination. As far as the number of components is concerned, there are play towers with two, three or more than three elements.

It must then be said that the possible combinations of these elements are endless.

What distinguishes a two-part play tower and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Play towers with two elements usually consist of a slide and a component that makes it possible to enter the tower. However, there are also a few models without a slide.

These types of play towers are definitely space-saving, but at the same time they are not a real challenge for older children. On the other hand, they are very suitable for smaller children and can be set up quickly. For the small dimensions, they can even be placed indoors.

Advantages
  • Space-saving
  • Suitable for smaller children
  • Quick to set up
Disadvantages
  • Not very challenging
  • Not for many children at the same time

What distinguishes a three-part play tower and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

There is a very wide choice of play towers with three elements. A first advantage is that you can play with it at the same time as a friend. While one child is having fun with the swing, the other can play with the slide.

This type of play tower represents a good middle ground. They are suitable for smaller and larger children and do not take up as much space as the play towers that consist of more than three elements.

Advantages
  • Challenging
  • Can be used in pairs
  • For smaller and larger children
Disadvantages
  • Not space-saving
  • Complex to assemble
  • Not suitable for indoor use

What distinguishes a play tower with more than three elements and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Play towers with three elements are very attractive for children. They offer a great challenge for the development of children's motor skills.

To be able to afford such types of towers, one must have a lot of space available. The children should also be a little older and can enjoy playing with several children at the same time. Such types of play towers are not suitable for smaller children.

This type of play tower is, of course, also the most expensive and the construction is complex.

Advantages
  • Challenging
  • For several children at the same time
  • Attractive
Disadvantages
  • Not space-saving
  • Complex to assemble
  • Not suitable for smaller children

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate play towers

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate play towers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular play tower is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Material
  • Platform height and dimensions
  • Combination of elements

Material

For most play towers, wood is used for the main structure, while elements such as swings and slides are usually built from plastic.

The plastic inserts give the play equipment the opportunity to look more attractive because of their colours. Play towers made of wood are usually impregnated and therefore protected against the weather.

There are play tower models that are only made of plastic. These are not weatherproof and less stable, but on the other hand they are easier to move and therefore more suitable for indoor play.

Platform height and dimensions

As mentioned earlier, play towers are usually offered with two different platform heights: 1.20m or 1.50m. The former are suitable for younger children and the latter for older children. Some manufacturers offer the same model in both platform height variants. Less common, but also available, are the 90cm and 125cm sizes.

As for the dimensions, these can vary greatly depending on the number of components, model and manufacturer. The following table summarises the results of a research of the different play tower dimensions. These are rounded values.

Property dimensions in metres
Length 1.60-7
Width 1.10-4.00
Height 1.00-3.50

The area of the play towers can range from 4 to 27m².

Combination of elements

There are numerous combinations in which the elements of a play tower are put together. The following accessories can be found as components:

  • Ladder
  • Slide (normal or wave slide)
  • Rope ladder
  • Climbing ladder
  • Swing (one, two or three)
  • Climbing net
  • Bridge
  • Balcony
  • Wall bars
  • Fireman's pole
  • Sandpit
  • Rope

There is no better or worse combination. The large selection makes it possible to meet every taste.
