What is a retractable clothesline and what are its advantages?

Let's take it one step at a time. A clothesline is an object with ropes, lines, wires or similar that is used to hold wet clothes while drying in the sun, indoors or elsewhere. That goes without saying, but when we talk about retractable clotheslines we add an extra feature: these ropes are retracted or rolled up when they are not being used.

These have a base that is usually installed on walls to stay there, and the ropes only need to be removed when you need to hang clothes. Each line has a hook or ring at the end to be hooked on the parallel end. Here are some of the main advantages.

Advantages
  • You will save space
  • You can extend them as required
  • Better appearance
  • They are more compact
Disadvantages
  • Some may not withstand outdoor spaces
  • The ropes can get stuck
  • They must be installed

Retractable Coil or Wall Mounted Clothesline - What to look out for?

Retractable clotheslines have one thing in common: they all have ropes to hang your wet clothes on that are retracted when they are not needed to reduce the size of the product to a minimum. However, they don't all look the same.

Coil. The base is usually round or cubic and they are placed on walls, small murals and firm structures. They are usually practical and compact, so only one person is needed to install them. Due to their shape, they can protrude a little from the wall, in order to store the ropes included.

Their stability is much lower than wall clotheslines, however, their installation will be much simpler and will only require one person to do it. Its instructions will easily explain the few steps to follow to achieve it.

Wall-mounted. These models are usually fully adhered to the wall thanks to their flat surface, so they are much more stable. It is necessary that these walls are completely straight to secure the platform well. This means that, as long as the ropes are not extended, it does not take up any extra space.

As they are usually much larger in size than coil clotheslines, several people may be needed to support, guide and accompany the installation. And although the process may be more cumbersome, its strength and stability will be much greater.

Coil Wall
Location On walls or similar structures On straight walls
Shape Round or cubic Flat
Size Small Medium to large
Outstanding Yes No
Personnel for installation One person May require more than one person
Stability Minor Major

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and rate different models of retractable clotheslines

Now that you know the basic details about retractable clotheslines, here are some other characteristics that you can take into consideration before making your purchase. If you still have any doubts, you will surely be able to clear them up after reading these lines.

  • Number of ropes
  • Material
  • Length
  • Usage

Number of ropes

The ropes or lines are the most important element of your clothesline, and the versatility and functionality of it will highly depend on them. That is why it is important to define the number of lines you will need.

Unique. The simplest clotheslines can have a single extendable line. This will allow you to save space, money and hang a small amount of clothes. Use it if you want your clothesline to be indoors (like a bathroom) or when the amount of items to be hung is very low.

Multiple. Most retractable clotheslines have 2 or 3 lines, which multiplies the amount of clothes you can place on them. It is a good option when you want to install it in outdoor spaces, when you have a large number of garments or when they are heavy, such as duvets.

Material

Clothesline ropes can basically come in 2 materials when it comes to retractable options: nylon and plastic. Check their characteristics to know in detail the one that best suits your needs.

Nylon. Its resistance is usually greater than that of plastic and it can support a greater amount of weight. It has a similar appearance to fabric. However, it tends to absorb water, so it is important not to keep it stretched during the rain.

Plastic. It doesn't absorb moisture, so it will go great with your wet clothes. Its appearance is synthetic and it is resistant to weather changes, sun, rain and other seasons for a long time; however, it is not recommended to abuse it or to overdo it by placing too much weight on a single rope.

Length

There is a retractable clothesline for every need and one of its variant characteristics is the length of its ropes. If you have a small space, such as a limited patio, a laundry room or a corner in the bathroom, opt for options whose ropes are no longer than 5 metres, to save money and resources.

If, on the other hand, you wish to place it in a more spacious garden, balcony or larger space, there are clotheslines whose ropes can reach 20 metres and more. The important thing is that you know very well the measurements of your spaces to find the perfect option for each one of them.

Use

You can place your retractable clothesline wherever you like, but these locations can basically have 2 basic characteristics: they can be indoors or outdoors. Here we tell you the difference.

Indoors. It can be a bathroom, a space in the kitchen, in the laundry room or similar. Placing them in these spaces is usually useful when you need to hang small garments or when you don't have an external place. For their practicality we recommend clotheslines with only 1 or 2 coil strings (so that they don't take up too much space on your wall).

Outdoors. It is the ideal place to let your clothes dry. You will have different climatic variables, so we recommend a sturdy clothesline. The more ropes you have, the better you will be able to make the most of the space and save time waiting to hang other clothes. We recommend wall-mounted models for the best appearance.
