What are rosaries and what are their advantages?

Rosaries are religious objects similar to crucifixes, which have beads strung as a pendant, used to recite the prayer of the Holy Rosary, to which the accessory owes its name. These beads are usually round or oval in shape. There are different varieties of rosaries, adapted to different uses and types of prayers.

The beads help to guide us in the repetition of the prayers, either by the number of units or by the spaces between them, since our fingers touch them as we repeat the evocations. Although the rosary is especially associated with Catholicism, many other religions have incorporated it as an object of supplication, forgiveness or thanksgiving to God. Due to its enormous popularity and devotion, this element can be found on the market in different materials and models.

  • It is an object associated with faith
  • It provides security and peace to those who possess it
  • For many it is an amulet of protection
  • It is aesthetically beautiful
  • There are religions that reject it
  • Some consider it esoteric and superficial
  • There are those who see it as an object of punishment and manipulation

Five decade rosary, wedding ribbon, or First Communion ribbon - what should you look out for?

Rosaries are religious accessories used as tools or bridges to reach God through specific prayers; and different variants can be found, used for different functions and specific ceremonies, for example:

Five-decade rosary. This is the best known and used for the recitation of the complete Holy Rosary. It is made up of a crucifix and five groups of ten beads, and can come in different materials, from metals such as silver to wood (mainly from the olive tree for its religious value).

You can also find rosaries of five decades made of more modest materials, such as plastic, and some extremely ostentatious and sophisticated ones, made with crystal spheres; so there are variants for all tastes, styles and possibilities.

Wedding ribbon rosary. Also called wedding rosary, this religious accessory is made of two linked rosaries that share the same crucifix, and that have two loops of five decades each. Their beads are generally larger than those of the five-decade rosaries, and are more widely spaced.

First Communion Rosary. This rosary represents the first reception that Catholics give to Jesus Christ at an early age. It usually comes with a prayer book that children learn for their first communion, and is usually in a white and gold colour scheme.

Is there a method for praying the rosary?

The rosary begins to be prayed starting from the cross at the end of the rosary, and each bead is held with the fingers until a prayer is finished and the next bead is passed on. After praying, follow the heels to the left around the chain on each bead, until you reach the cross again.

The beads, 59 in all, are divided into five decades (or five sections), with each decade representing an event in the life of Christ. These events are grouped into a "Mystery" (there are four mysteries), which is a truth in the life of God, and are recited on certain days of the week.

How much does a rosary cost?

The prices of rosaries depend basically on their models and formats, but mostly on their materials. In the following paragraph we will tell you the approximate costs of this product so that you can have a parameter of the commercial values.

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and qualify the different models of rosaries

In this last section we will comment on the most important factors that you should take into account when choosing a rosary, since it is an extremely varied and adaptable element to different types of uses, styles and prayers.

Rosaries of a decade

There are also different models of one-decade rosaries, in which each full turn is equivalent to a complete Rosary. Below, we will mention the different variants of this type of rosary, which is less known and used than the traditional hanging rosary.

One decade bracelet rosary. This rosary is worn on the wrist while reciting the recitation or prayer, and consists of a decade plus a bead for the Lord's Prayer. Another difference with most of the other models is that instead of a cross it usually has a medal.

Catholic one-decade ring rosary. This format is designed to simplify the task of prayer, and to be able to carry this religious accessory anywhere, whether it is worn on the finger as a ring (although this is not the most usual), or kept in a handbag, wallet, purse, etc.

It is in the shape of a ring with a crucifix and ten small integrated marks around it that serve the function of traditional beads. The method of prayer is similar to that of the rosary of a decade bracelet: with the fingertips of the other hand you make the reminder point of each prayer until you reach the cross.

Electronic rosaries

Incredible as it may seem, technology has also reached the heavenly world, and markets have included among their rosary variants the electronic model, which consists of a device with a button on which the day of the week can be selected so that the prayer can be recited with the voice of the Pope.

This modern accessory is specially designed to make it easier for people who do not have the time or the will to recite the Holy Rosary regularly. It is an up-to-date option for believers to resume their prayers, despite the hectic pace of daily life.

Other types

As we mentioned in the "Buying Guide" section, although the rosary is associated with Catholicism, given that it commemorates the mysteries of the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, there are also other religions that use it as a religious or spiritual object, for example:

Buddhist rosary. It consists of 108 beads astrologically related to the 12 zodiacal houses, which represent different areas of life. Unlike the Catholic religion, which prays in the name of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, Buddhism focuses its attention on mantras, breathing and meditation.

These beads are usually made from the seeds of Bodi, which, according to legend, was the tree where Buddha meditated when he attained enlightenment. However, they can be made from other materials, such as bone, wood and seeds of the rudraksha plant.

Muslim rosary. Called tasbih or masbaha, but colloquially known as the Muslim rosary, it is used as a religious object to repeatedly invoke the names of Allah (or Allah). It consists of a series of 33 or 99 beads or grains placed in the form of a necklace.

This religious or mystical devotional accessory can be made of different materials of varying qualities. While some are made of precious metals, the most common and widely used are made of plastic, wood or other low to medium-cost raw materials.

Rosaries are made of different materials, adapted to the preferences and purchasing power of each person. Below, we will mention the most commonly used raw materials, so that you can choose the one that suits you best.

Wooden rosaries. In ancient times, wooden rosaries were used by poor people who did not have money to buy precious stones; but later the use of this material became popular, becoming one of the most used by different social classes. A very popular wood for the manufacture of rosaries comes from the olive tree because of its religious and spiritual value, not only for the catholic creed but also for many other religions and cultures, as it is considered a symbol of blessing, wisdom and health.

Silver rosaries. Silver rosaries can come alone or with applications of precious or natural stones, of different colours, sizes and textures. This material stands out for its beauty, fineness, resistance and durability, making it a very interesting option to consider.

Stainless steel rosaries. They come in several extremely versatile variants, which can be large or small, with cross or miraculous medal, with flat beads or ball-shaped (normally), etc. Moreover, it is a material that does not cause allergy or irritation.

Stone rosaries. Stone rosaries are one of the oldest and most beautiful variants of these religious accessories. They can come with precious or natural stones of hematite, turquoise, jade, pearls, etc., in multiple sizes, formats, textures and prices.

Gold rosaries. Gold is a variant of silver, but much more expensive, especially if it is white gold. These rosaries can come in the format of a pendant or bracelet, to pray the Holy Rosary, but also to wear as a decorative accessory.

Although the main use of the rosary is religious, since it serves as an intermediary between the speaker and his creed, it can also have other uses, always accompanied by the faith towards this amulet or crucifix, and its spiritual symbolism. Here we will mention some of them:

Personal. The main use of the rosary is personal, that is, the use of this religious object as a tool for individual prayer. You can use its different varieties, such as the five-decade rosary, or the one-decade rosary, among others, but it will always be prayed individually, as an intimate and introspective act.

Ceremonial. The ceremonial rosary is the one used, as its name indicates, for certain ceremonies, events or religious traditions. The most common are the wedding loop rosary, or wedding rosary, and the first communion rosary (which can also be used on other occasions).

Decorative. The decorative rosary is the one used for prayer, but also to decorate the different rooms of the home and to be used as jewellery, given that it has an aesthetic value that makes it eye-catching and ornamental. The most commonly used are made of silver, gold and stones, depending on personal style and economic possibilities.
