Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a rotary clothes dryer
What is line capacity?
If you often want to hang up large textiles, pay particular attention to the specified span. It indicates the distance between the outer holding points. On average, 10 m of line are needed per washing machine load.
The following rule of thumb indicates which line length is ideal for your needs:
|size of household||line length|
|single household||15-20 m|
|households with up to three people||40 m|
|households with up to four people||50 m|
|households with five or more people||60 m|
Tip: Wind is the most important factor when drying your laundry. If in doubt, choose the next largest line capacity if possible. This way you can hang your clothes with a generous distance between them, because: Laundry that can move freely in the wind dries faster!
The right location is essential. Choose a place where there is as much wind as possible. Sunlight also helps your laundry dry faster (but beware: too much sun can bleach colours!). A forest nearby increases the humidity, so you should expect your laundry to take longer to dry.
In general, if you want to dry your laundry indoors, make sure the room is well ventilated!
By the way, a (fixed) outdoor location does not mean that you can only dry your laundry there in spring or summer. Temperatures below 10 degrees are no problem either. The only prerequisite: a little wind and low humidity. Rain, of course, is a no-go.
Does comfort also play a big role for you in the household? Do you want to enjoy your umbrella for a long time?
Pay attention to the material the rotary dryer is made of. It should be UV and weather resistant and withstand even a high load. The plastic parts should be resistant to mould.
Aluminium frames are light and yet stable. They also offer reliable protection against corrosion and rust.
The support arms and lines should also be protected from external influences when not in use so that they do not soil the laundry when it is used again. The cheaper models come with protective covers for this purpose. High-quality rotary dryers are equipped with a convenient line retraction system that ensures that the lines are kept dry and safely stowed in the support arms.
Ease of movement is the number one criterion for a high-quality rotary dryer.
It should be possible to open or close the rotary dryer with just one hand, using a lever or line pull, without much effort. Even better, of course, are models that are equipped with an automatic mechanism.
If your model is equipped with a lift line, make sure that this can also be stowed away so that it does not get dirty and is not a tripping hazard. Otherwise it can become an obstacle, especially when mowing the lawn!
After some time, the lines lose their tension. Especially if heavy laundry is to be hung up frequently, it is important to pay attention to the possibility of tightening the lines. High-quality models also score points here with an automatic system.
An individual height adjustment is very helpful for short or tall people.
Especially if the rotary dryer is operated by different users, for example in an apartment building. The classic standing rotary dryer can be individually adjusted with a few height levels or even steplessly.
Premium products are characterised by various extras.
An ergonomic design or plastic parts, such as protective caps, which come in different colours. Some models have additional clothes hooks on which blouses and shirts can be hung without wrinkles with the help of a clothes hanger.
A very useful and at the same time important detail: individual components should be replaceable in the long run by easily acquired spare parts!
Which major manufacturers are there?
Branded goods made in Germany are produced by Blome, Juwel, Leifheit and Vileda. Vileda primarily produces affordable quality products, Brabantia is a Dutch brand and the leading manufacturer of wall-mounted rotary dryers.
Leifheit offers the largest selection of different products with many different functions and line lengths.
Whether buying online or in a local specialist shop, both purchase options have advantages and disadvantages. Online shops usually offer a clear overview via test reports and price comparisons, but exchanging defective goods is often complicated and tedious.
If you opt for a personal consultation in a specialist shop, you can test the desired product yourself. However, it is important to check the dimensions of the product beforehand so that there are no problems when transporting it to your home.
What do the different models cost?
Inexpensive models are usually discount products without many extras. They are usually smaller mobile rotary dryers. These are available for as little as 20 euros. If it is a high-quality and durable premium product with a large span and a high line capacity, you can expect a price of around 200 euros.
Decision: What types of rotary clothes dryers are there and which is the right one for you?
In the past, unsightly clotheslines were stretched from balcony to balcony, across the garden or over the terrace. Today there is a much better alternative: the modern household helper when it comes to laundry is the rotary clothes dryer.
Basically, there are three types of rotary dryers:
- Standing rotary dryers
- Wall-mounted rotary dryers
- Mobile rotary dryers
Which model is ideal for you depends on the one hand on your individual needs and requirements for a household helper of this type. On the other hand, the future location is also an important criterion for the right choice.
The following overview shows you the most important features and compares the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of laundry umbrellas.
How is the standing rotary clothes dryer defined and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The standing rotary dryer is the stable classic among the models. Ideal locations are on the terrace, in the garden, inside or in the backyard. However, you need enough space for this.
Since it has to be firmly anchored to the ground due to its span, you should be sure about the choice of location and possibly consult your landlord beforehand. It might even be a good idea to share the space on a large laundry umbrella with other tenants or neighbours.
If your landlord allows you to hang laundry in the garden, but does not want a ground socket to be permanently set in concrete as an anchor in the lawn, for example, then a mobile rotary clothes dryer is more suitable for you.
What is the definition of a wall-mounted rotary dryer and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The wall-mounted rotary clothes dryer allows you to air-dry your laundry without an annoying standpipe blocking valuable space on the patio or in the lawn. It is simply attached to a suitable wall with special fastening material.
On most models, the support arms with the lines can be automatically extended and then retracted at the touch of a button. After use, you can store this model stylishly and discreetly in a practical wall box.
The only drawback is that it is not possible to adjust the height individually. You should therefore think carefully about the height at which you want to mount the rotary clothes dryer before installing it, in order to guarantee effortless handling later on. A wall-mounted rotary clothes dryer is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
What is the definition of a mobile rotary dryer and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The mobile rotary dryer is easy to transport. It is therefore well suited for taking along on trips, for example on the next camping holiday in a caravan.
This model is also an excellent alternative to a standing rotary dryer if you do not have the possibility or are not allowed to attach it.
Depending on its size, it is also suitable for use on the balcony or inside the flat. Depending on the weather, it can be placed flexibly in a wide variety of locations. Mobile rotary clothes dryers are available with a three-legged aluminium frame or feet with practical castors.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate rotary dryers
Which rotary dryer is best for me? To answer this question and find the right model for you, there are a few factors that you can use to objectively compare the many different offers.
In summary, these are the following product characteristics:
- Line capacity
- Span or line length of the outermost line
- Line protection
- Type of fastening
- Height adjustability/height
- rotating support arms
- Retensioning technology
- further equipment features
In the following paragraphs you can find out exactly what the respective aspects are. This will help you to assess how relevant they are for your purchase decision and to better compare the products.
Line capacity (number of washing machine loads)
Probably the most important information about a rotary dryer is its line capacity. How many washing machine loads will fit on my rotary dryer at the same time?
Of course, the number of people living in the household plays a role here. That is, how often and how much washing do I do at all?
Clearly, you won't have much fun with a line capacity of only one or two washing machine loads if you're a large family with huge mountains of laundry. So a family of several should not save at the wrong end and choose a model with a line capacity of at least five washing machine loads.
But even if you are single, you may want to buy a larger rotary dryer if, for example, you have a lot of work clothes and have to wash them often. If you have already washed once or twice and the clothes are not yet dry, the line will ideally fit a third time.
Stretch or length of the outermost leash
The length of the outermost line is also important, depending on the amount of laundry you have. Basically, your laundry should have enough space to dry efficiently.
If you wash a lot of large textiles such as bed sheets, table linen or similar, the distance between the outer holding points should be as large as possible. This way you can hang your laundry generously and nothing overlaps or perhaps even has to be dried in two layers.
This only complicates and slows down the drying process. Even small items such as socks or underwear will dry faster if they can hang next to each other with sufficient spacing.
To prevent the lines from being exposed to all kinds of environmental influences such as sun, rain or pollen when not in use, they should be protected from these, for example by using a protective cover. Otherwise, you should always wipe them thoroughly before use so that your freshly washed, clean laundry does not get dirty streaks.
Cheaper models often include a protective cover in the delivery package. This can then be easily pulled over the frame after folding. If such a cover is not included in the delivery, you should research whether it can be purchased as an accessory.
The mobile models in particular do not offer any protection for the lines. On the other hand, because of their small size, you can easily store them indoors or in another dry place after use. Otherwise, you would have to clean the rotary dryer before each use.
High-quality models, on the other hand, often convince with their line retraction technology. This is not only super fast, but also very practical. After use, the lines can be automatically stored in the carrying arms.
Type of attachment
Another decisive purchase criterion is the type of mounting that gives the rotary dryer the necessary support. The larger the span of the rotary dryer, and thus the larger the surface that is exposed to the wind, the more important it is that it stands securely.
You mount the wall-mounted rotary dryer on a suitable wall. If you have done this carefully, you don't need to worry any more, it guarantees you a secure hold.
The situation is different with floor-standing rotary clothes dryers. Because these are often very large, you should pay particular attention to quality. It is usually necessary to embed a ground socket in concrete. The material can play an important role here.
Metal ground sockets are more durable and more resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations than plastic ground sockets. Also make sure that it does not protrude too far from the ground after installation, so that it is not an obstacle when mowing the lawn or a tripping hazard in general.
However, there are also many standing rotary clothes dryers that have a ground anchor that can be screwed into the ground. This can be easily attached to soft ground such as lawns. The advantage of this is that it is not a permanent intrusion into the design of your garden, as it can be easily removed. A good argument if you have to ask your landlord for permission first!
Mobile clothes racks have a base that usually consists of four legs. However, this does not guarantee stability. Models of this type should not be exposed to strong winds. On the other hand, you can change their location flexibly.
Opening / closing
There are different ways of opening and closing umbrellas. Manually, either by lever or line pull, or fully automatically. Which version is right for you naturally depends on your budget.
If you want to buy your rotary dryer in a specialist shop, take advantage of the opportunity on site and test it for ease of operation.
Height adjustability / height
The working height should be back-friendly.
You should be able to comfortably reach both the outer lines, which are a little higher up, and the inner lines. Of course, you have to pay special attention to the height of the lines if you are a slightly shorter or perhaps a slightly taller person.
A great advantage of individual height adjustment is that you can share the use of the rotary dryer with other tenants or your neighbours. The wall-mounted rotary dryer model, which is fixed at a certain height, would not be suitable for this. If you are looking for an inexpensive model, you will usually have to do without this useful feature.
Rotating support arms
Rotating support arms have the advantage that the laundry can move freely with the wind and thus dry better. On the other hand, it makes it easier to hang and unhang the textiles.
Retensioning technique / line tightening
After some time, the tension of the linen wears off. You will notice this when your laundry no longer hangs as nicely as it did at the beginning. You need to re-tension the lines so that you can continue to enjoy your rotary dryer.
High-quality models are sometimes equipped with an automatic mechanism. This automatically ensures that the tension is corrected each time the clothes are hung.
With other rotary clothes dryers, you can tighten the lines yourself. Sometimes they can be tensioned individually and even replaced, which is practical and much easier than having to rethread the entire washing line. In this case, you can also find many (universal) instructions on the internet that explain the exact procedure step by step.
The material should be UV and weather resistant. The frames are usually made of steel. Aluminium convinces with its stability and low weight. In addition, it offers reliable protection against rust and corrosion.
The lines should be tear-resistant. They are usually made of plastic or stainless steel coated with synthetic fibres.
Maybe you already have two models in mind and are not sure which one to choose. Then it is worth taking a look at the additional features and the scope of delivery. Are there additional hooks for hanging clothes hangers?
Are all the necessary fastening materials included in the product package? Are detailed instructions included? Does the manufacturer offer a guarantee? In the event that, contrary to expectations, something breaks, it is advisable to look for a guarantee of at least 2 years.
