The Best Samsung Washing Machine: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Samsung washing machine

When does it make sense to buy a new washing machine?

To buy a new washing machine, the old one doesn't always have to be broken. Maybe it has reached a certain age, so that it is slowly but surely becoming obsolete.

There are also other reasons why buying a new washing machine makes sense.

In modern times, the washing machine is an integral part of every household. (Image source: 123rf.com / 70173176)

The field of household appliances is so fast-moving that new functions and innovations are constantly coming onto the market, thus also driving progress.

In the case of washing machines, since 2016 there has been an obligation for all manufacturers to equip their machines with an energy label.

This shows how energy-efficient the washing machine is. The best rating is currently A+++.

There is also a rule of thumb that is always a guide when buying new electrical appliances: if the appliance is more than eight to ten years old, it always makes sense to buy a new one.

In this way, you not only support the environment, but also help to ensure that future washing loads are as ecological as possible.

What features does a Samsung washing machine offer?

Washing machine manufacturers always equip their machines with certain functions that are beneficial to the laundry, clean it better or integrate functions that make it easier to operate the machine.

However, these are labelled differently for each manufacturer, even if the effect is the same compared to a machine from another brand.

Below you will find an overview of the typical functions of a Samsung washing machine, including the corresponding explanation.

Q-Drum™ & QuickDrive™ technology

The so-called Q-Drum is designed to deliver the same performance during a wash cycle, while using 20% less energy, without compromising the washing performance.

This is achieved by means of an additional integrated back panel that rotates with the drum.

The resulting multidimensional laundry movement cleans quickly, efficiently and gently.

AddWash™

This function allows you to add laundry even after the wash cycle has started.

For this purpose, an additional flap is integrated in the front door, which can be opened separately.

Adding laundry is only possible at temperatures below 50°C. The flap is then locked. The flap is then locked.

Automatic detergent dispensing

In cooperation with the AutoOptimalWash programme, the machine is able to determine the amount of detergent by means of a sensor.

This ensures particularly ecological consumption.

LED drum lighting

LEDs are integrated in the drum to illuminate the inside of the machine during loading and unloading. Thanks to these, the user gets a better overview.

SmartControl 2.0

This function allows the machine to be operated via WiFi using an app on a smartphone.

Digital inverter motor

The machine is equipped with two motors that quickly and efficiently provide the power needed to clean the laundry.

Thanks to this technology, the owner saves energy and costs. In addition, this drive is very quiet, low-wear and durable.

In fact, Samsung is so convinced of this that the manufacturer gives a 10-year guarantee on the machine.

Diamond care drum

The honeycomb structure of the laundry drum is designed to treat internal laundry as gently as possible.

In addition, there are small holes and elevations in the drum, which prevents laundry damage.

Child safety lock

Thanks to it, children are not able to open the machine during a wash cycle.

For this purpose, the flap is locked after the start and can only be opened again by entering a key combination.

Acoustic signal

The end of a wash cycle is confirmed by an acoustic signal.

Full water protection

Samsung's so-called AquaStop. This function provides the necessary safety that prevents the machine from leaking.

For this purpose, there is a valve on the water hose and an additional sensor inside the base tub.

FoamActive technology

This technology allows the laundry to be cleaned gently and very thoroughly, even on delicate items.

For this purpose, the machine creates a foam cushion in the drum which gently envelops the clothes, providing them with the necessary protection against damage.

Q-Rator

This name stands for an app that acts as a washing guide.

Within the app, it is possible to enter information about the laundry and receive an optimal recommendation for settings, programme and other information.

At the same time, a maintenance assistant is integrated, which provides information about the washing machine status and energy consumption.

Silicone-coated heating element

In models with this feature, the heating element is coated with a layer of silicone.

This gives it a longer life, ensures constant heating performance and protects it from limescale at the same time.

StayClean drawer

An innovative rinsing system inside the detergent drawer ensures that detergent residues and soiling are regularly removed. This prevents the formation of a bacteria breeding ground.

It is important to bear in mind that not every Samsung washing machine has all these functions.

For example, there are models that do not integrate a WiFi connection.

Likewise, not all of the manufacturer's washing machines include a self-cleaning detergent drawer.

When choosing functions, it is always important to know what is particularly important to you as a user.

Decision: What types of Samsung washing machines are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between two different types of Samsung washing machines:

  • Front-loading washing machines
  • Washer-dryers

Samsung has completely abandoned the production of top-loading washing machines for several years.

The different types each have advantages and disadvantages. Depending on what you prefer, a different type is suitable for you. The following section will help you decide.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of front-loading washing machines?

The front-loading washing machine is the typical appliance that many people know from the bathrooms and basements of their homes.

A washing machine that is loaded from the front and can also be integrated in the kitchen if necessary, or stacked in the bathroom, together with the dryer.

It has the great advantage that nowadays it comes with all kinds of functions to wash laundry as cleanly as possible.

Depending on the model, a drum volume of up to ten kilograms is available, which is particularly suitable for large families.

Of course, front loading can also be more of a disadvantage for older people.

Advantages
  • Depending on the model, equipped with a loading volume of up to 10 kilograms
  • Numerous functions integrated for clean laundry
  • Can be partially or fully integrated
  • Stackable with the dryer
Disadvantages
  • Take up a lot of space

What are the advantages and disadvantages of washer-dryers?

A washer-dryer is primarily chosen by those who would like to buy both a washing machine and a dryer but do not have the space required for two appliances.

This appliance does both jobs in one. Moreover, the washing cycles do not produce worse results than those of a normal front-loader.

One thing to bear in mind, however, is that the machines usually have a few of the typical washing machine functions, but these are not as extensive.

The appliance practically has to be up to both tasks, which in turn means that one or the other special feature is not integrated in these appliances.

Overall, washer-dryers offer an alternative especially to those who have a small flat or are specifically looking for such a device.

Advantages
  • Washing and drying in one operation
  • Can be integrated
  • Takes up less space than two separate machines
Disadvantages
  • Certain special programmes may not be integrated

Especially in terms of electricity and water consumption, today's washing machines are very energy-efficient. (Picture source: 123rf.com / 31000076)

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate Samsung washing machines

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate Samsung washing machines.

This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular Samsung washing machine is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:

  • Front-loading or top-loading
  • Drum volume
  • Integratability
  • Operating volume
  • Programme variety
  • Energy and spin efficiency

Front or top loader

If you are looking for a washing machine for the first time, you will come across two terms: Top loader and front loader.

Samsung is dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of front-loading washing machines. Nevertheless, we would like to explain briefly here what the differences are.

Front-loading

The front-loading washing machine only allows laundry to be loaded from the front. This means that the user has to kneel down first.

The loading flap is located on the front of the appliance and allows access to the laundry drum.

Furthermore, on some Samsung appliances there is another, smaller flap that can be opened separately. This is intended for loading laundry during the wash cycle.

Top loader

Top-loaders, on the other hand, are not loaded from the front but from the top.

They also have a high load capacity - depending on the model - but often have much smaller dimensions, which means that the machine can also be placed more easily in smaller rooms.

If a washing machine and dryer are desired, they again have the disadvantage that they cannot be stacked.

When choosing the right model, it often also matters where the appliance is to be placed. The top loader is no problem in the bathroom, but more so in the kitchen.

Washing machines are usually placed under the worktop. However, due to the upward opening, this is rather suboptimal for a top loader.

Drum volume

When choosing the right washing machine, it is important to decide on an appropriate drum volume.

This specification includes the amount of laundry that can be placed in the machine during a wash cycle. Samsung produces models that can hold up to ten kilograms of laundry in one wash cycle.

However, it should be logical that this value seems oversized for a single household.

To find a suitable machine with the right capacity, the following classification is useful:

Household volume
Single household 3 to 5 kilograms
Two to three-person household 6 to 7 kilograms
Four-person household and up kilograms and more
Machine for exclusively large laundry items 10 kilograms

In order to find the most suitable size, it is also important to know how many washing cycles are required per week and which programmes are used.

For example, there are families who plan only one or two wash cycles per week, while other families with the same number of people can manage five to six wash cycles.

It is important that the machine is fully loaded during a wash cycle, but the laundry should lie loosely in the drum.

If, on the other hand, the washing machine is always only half-loaded and runs through a full wash programme, this may shorten its lifespan. Apart from the fact that this approach is not necessarily ecological.

Integratability

Integratable washing machines are usually designed to fit perfectly under the kitchen worktop.

Depending on the model, additional front panelling is possible by means of a separate panel.

Should this be one of the basic requirements of a new machine, it is important to check whether the machine is either "integrable" or "fully integrable".

It also makes sense to take a closer look at the dimensions so that the washing machine fits seamlessly into the kitchen landscape.

Operating volume

There are two values for the operating volume that should be taken into account when choosing the right model:

The noise level during the wash cycle and the spin cycle. They are usually expressed in decibels.

The lower the value, the quieter the machine. Samsung makes washing machines that develop a volume of 51 decibels during the wash cycle. The value rises to 74 decibels during the spin cycle.

Programme variety

A Samsung washing machine always comes with a whole repertoire of programmes that allow different treatment of the laundry.

Here is a brief overview of the programmes that a Samsung washing machine can offer:

Standard programmes Additional/special programmes Additional functions
Cotton, Easy care, Mixed, Wool, Delicates, Hand wash Baby cotton/Intensive, Jeans, Energy saving, Outdoor, Short programme ECO drum cleaning, Pump down, Spin, Rinse+spin, AutoOptimalWash

Please note that these are the basic programmes, but they are not necessarily available on every Samsung model.

If you have narrowed down certain models, it is therefore advisable to get an overview of the available programmes and consider which ones are indispensable for you.

Energy and spin efficiency

If you are considering buying a new washing machine, both energy efficiency class and spin efficiency class are important.

These ratings tell you a lot about how energy efficient the machine is, both in terms of water and electricity consumption.

These days, the labelling is done in gradations from A+++ to D, with D being the worst. Most Samsung washing machines have an A+++ label.

The labelling is done according to Directive 2019/30/EU, which since 2016 has even legally required manufacturers to inform their customers about consumption.

The spin efficiency class, on the other hand, provides information about the residual moisture in the finished spin-dried laundry.

Here, the value can lie between A and C, whereby a rating of A means that as little residual moisture as possible remains in the laundry.

Important: A washing machine can have an energy efficiency rating of A+++, while the spin efficiency rating is in the C range.

Facts worth knowing about Samsung washing machines

Does Samsung only make washing machines?

Samsung is a South Korean company that was founded on 1 March 1938. Today, the Samsung Group is led by CEOs who belong to several individual companies.

It is curious that the main business segment initially included the trade in foodstuffs.

After the Second World War and the destruction of the company, the owner Lee Byung-chull rebuilt the company.

This time as an industrial sugar refinery, which later made him one of the largest food manufacturers.

Over time, the manufacturer established itself on the South Korean market in several areas, including an additional textile factory.

Although the South Korean company Samsung has been present in the media in recent years mainly due to new innovations in the smartphone and smarthome sector, its product portfolio also includes washing machines. (Image source: 123rf.com / 80800216)

Samsung Electronics was launched in 1969, where it first focused on manufacturing electrotechnical items. At that time, however, Samsung limited itself to consumer electronics and household appliances.

Currently, the product range also includes the manufacture of smartphones and IT solutions in addition to these two specialist areas.

Samsung's headquarters are still in Seoul, although the company now has a high international status and recorded a turnover of almost 230 billion euros in 2014 alone.

How long have washing machines been around and how do they work?

The first mechanical washing machines were developed in the 17th century. Despite being operated by hand, they took a considerable amount of work off housewives. On 22 August 1691, John Tizack registered the first patent for one of these mechanical washing machines.

The current form of washing machine, also known as a drum washing machine, was developed around 1858 and manufactured by Hamilton Smith, who put it into series production in 1906.

The appliance received a boost with the invention of the electric drive. In 1951, the first electric washing machines were available on the German market.

Modern washing machines still use this technology, only the design - top or front loader - varies.

Here, a laundry drum still rotates around a horizontal axis. In the front loader, the drum is suspended from one roller bearing, in the top loader from two. The machine is driven by an electric motor.

The typical washing cycle of a modern washing machine passes through the following stages:

  • Soaking
  • Prewash
  • Main wash
  • Rinse
  • Softener
  • Spin

Certain programmes dispense with one or other intermediate stage. For example, it is not desirable for every wash to be spun at the end.

Is regular cleaning necessary?

Here the answer is clearly "Yes!". Because this sometimes prolongs the life of the machine.

If a machine is not cleaned from time to time, dirt residues build up in certain places and get back onto the laundry during a wash cycle.

In particular, mould forms on the rubber seal and the detergent drawer is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

Samsung offers special programmes for cleaning the machine. In addition to ECO drum cleaning, there is a self-cleaning detergent drawer, which the manufacturer calls the StayClean drawer.

ECO drum cleaning applies a combination of soaking, pulsing and high speed to professionally remove dirt residues from the washing machine.

In addition to the drum, the door seal is also cleaned in the process without the need for additional cleaning agents.

Practical: The machines give the user a signal after 40 wash cycles that cleaning is required.
