The Best Security Lock: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a safety lock

What is a security lock?

A security lock is a generic term for different types of lock cylinders. Security locks are found in house entrance doors as well as in flat doors and serve to protect property.

Since the front door, next to the windows, is probably the first point of entry for burglars, it is essential to choose the right security lock. The lock therefore not only serves to provide security, but also conveys a feeling of well-being.

In addition to protection, the aesthetic aspect of a lock should of course not be neglected. In a beautiful living environment, the lock cylinder also serves as a visual embellishment.

To provide optimal security, the door must also meet security criteria. Even the best lock in the world is only as strong as the door around it.

Security locks are divided into different security categories and are standardised according to DIN.

By the way, so-called armoured bolts also help to secure the door.

What does a security lock cost?

There is a wide price range between the different security locks. The cost varies depending on the quality and size of the cylinder. The range can go from about 20 to 100 euros.

Inexpensive security locks start at just 20 euros, although it should of course be noted that small cylinders are cheaper than large ones, and low security levels are cheaper than very secure cylinders. Other factors that influence the price are cylinder brand, cylinder type and materials.

Who pays for the security lock?

Who pays for the damage in case of a defective lock? Landlord or tenant?

That depends. If you, as a tenant, have wilfully, i.e. intentionally, destroyed the lock, then you must also pay for the resulting damage. However, this will happen in the rarest of cases.

The German Civil Code §538 regulates who is liable in the event of a defect. A security lock is a mechanical component and wears out sooner or later. This means that even with normal use it will have to be replaced at some point. This is therefore not the tenant's responsibility, which means that the landlord must pay for the replacement.

How do I measure the size for a security lock?

To order and change a security lock, you first have to think about the right size. Therefore, I will explain here how to determine the correct cylinder size.

You can measure with a standard folding rule. It is important to know that there are two dimensions to be determined: the inside dimension (from the centre to the inside of the room) and the outside dimension (from the centre to the outside of the room).

Both sizes are determined from the centre of the cylinder or alternatively can be measured from the fixing screw. The outside dimension is always on the left and the inside dimension is always on the right.

The basic length for profile cylinders and knob cylinders is always 30/30mm.

Have you determined your cylinder dimensions? Congratulations, you can now proceed to the selection of your security lock.

Decision: What types of security locks are there and which one is right for you?

If you want to get a security lock, there are different types of cylinders that are suitable for different applications.

  • Double cylinder
  • Knob cylinder
  • Half cylinder
  • Lever cylinder

We would like to use the following section to help you make your decision so that you can buy the security lock that is best for you.

What is a double cylinder and when is it used?

The double cylinder is probably the most common cylinder. It can lock from the outside and from the inside with one key. The double cylinder is also available with the emergency and danger function, which means it can also be used if the key is inserted from one side.

  • Suitable for: Front doors, cellar doors, flat doors
  • can be operated from both sides
  • emergency and danger function
  • Can only be locked on the inside with a key
  • loss of key is usually expensive

What is a knob cylinder and when is it used?

The knob cylinder can only be locked from one side with the key. On the other side (inside) there is a knob. This means that this variant can always be locked from the inside and no key is needed.

  • Suitable for: Front doors, cellar doors, flat doors
  • convenient to close from the inside
  • Not suitable for doors with glass
  • lower security than double cylinder

What is a half cylinder and when is it used?

The half cylinder can only be locked on one side with the key (outside). It cannot be locked from the inside. The length is always 10mm on the inside and is different for the outside, depending on requirements.

  • Suitable for: Letterboxes, garage doors etc.
  • inexpensive
  • simple design
  • Cannot be locked on the inside
  • lower security level

What is a lever cylinder and when is it used?

The lever cylinder, as the name suggests, has a lever on one side. It opens and closes by means of this lever and is available in many different variations. However, it is the exception and is rarely used.

  • Suitable for: Lockers, letterboxes, boxes
  • simple operation
  • inexpensive
  • Only suitable for simple protection
  • few applications
Type of cylinder place of use
Double cylinder entrance doors, cellar doors, flat doors
Knob cylinder entrance doors, cellar doors, flat doors, but without glass insert
Half cylinder garage doors, key boxes, letter boxes
Lever cylinder lockers, safe-deposit boxes, boxes, wardrobes, vending machines

Purchase criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate security locks

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible security locks.

The criteria you can use to compare the cylinders with each other include:

  • Security level
  • Product dimensions
  • Overall length
  • Number of keys
  • Colour

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important in the individual criteria.

Security level

An important criterion for distinguishing between locking cylinders is, of course, the level of security guaranteed. Every security lock can be divided into different security levels, depending on the quality of the materials used and the workmanship.

Security locks of level 1-3 are usually used.

Cylinders are classified in security level 1 if they have 5 to 6 so-called internal pins. They are used for low to medium security needs, for example for garage doors, letterboxes or similar.

Cylinders that also have 5 to 6 internal pins are classified in security level 2. The difference, however, is that they provide additional security by scanning the key from the side.

Alternatively, they can also be equipped with a drilling protection. They are used for medium security requirements, for example garage doors with access to the house or a side entrance.

Cylinders that use at least 6-9 internal pins are classified as security level 3. For this lock, further security mechanisms are used to ensure the high security level.

Highest drilling protection as well as protection against pulling out or mortising is available here. They are used for high security requirements, for example in homes, office complexes or industrial plants.

Security level Security requirements Suitable for
Security level 1 Low to medium Garage doors, letter boxes, storage rooms
Security level 2 Medium Garage doors with access to the house, side entrance door to the house
Security level 3 High Home, office complexes or industrial plants

Note: Be very careful when selecting the security level. A security level that is too low provides a target for break-ins.

Product dimensions

Of course, the product dimensions of your cylinder play a role. The dimensions are determined by the door in which the security lock is to be installed. We have already explained above how to determine the correct dimensions.

Overall length

The length of the cylinder also depends on your door. The overall length is determined by the thickness of your door. This means that the length must be the same as the width of your door.

Number of keys

The number of keys for your cylinder usually depends on how many people should have access to the lock.

If your security lock is to be used for the entrance door of a detached house, the number of keys usually depends on the number of occupants. For a garden house, for example, fewer keys are usually needed because the fluctuation is not so high.

If your chosen cylinder does not have the required number of keys, this is usually not a problem. Make sure that a security card is included in the delivery and you can have additional keys made at your local locksmith or have them sent to you by the manufacturer.

Since the security lock is not only for security, but also has to serve aesthetic aspects, you should of course think about the colour of the lock.

It is important that the colour of your lock matches the colour of your door and fits harmoniously into the overall picture.

Facts worth knowing about security locks

What should I do if I lose the key to a security lock?

Losing a key can be very annoying and, above all, expensive. According to the Deutsche Schlüsselversicherung (German Key Insurance), a key is lost every 35 minutes in Germany, resulting in an average loss of 125 euros.

However, it is important to distinguish which type of key you lose. Usually, after a key is lost, the locking system has to be replaced, as it cannot be guaranteed that the required security is still in place.

In any case, you must inform your landlord immediately, as you are not allowed to have a duplicate key made without the tenant's permission.

Who bears the costs of the loss?

If the tenant is responsible for the loss of the key, he/she is also obliged to bear the costs of replacing it. The landlord is entitled to have the lock changed against reimbursement of the costs.

In order to feel safe despite the loss of the key, an alarm system, an electronic watchdog or even a motion detector are advantageous. Window locks are also extremely helpful to protect your flat or house from burglary.
