The Best Shredder Oil: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a shredder oil

Why is buying paper shredder oil the best choice for you?

In a nutshell, a paper shredder is a mechanical device that requires a certain amount of care and maintenance. As with all mechanical devices, the performance and lifespan of your shredder depends on whether and how you take care of it. Depending on its use and the type of cut, a shredder can shred several hundred sheets a week.

During this shredding process, paper dust is produced that can accumulate on the cutting rollers and block them. The result is a slower and significantly louder operation of your shredder.

When shredding paper with a document shredder, dust is produced that can affect the mechanics of the device. A paper shredder should therefore be regularly maintained with paper shredder oil. (Image source: pixabay.com / stux)

Think here perhaps of the chain of a bicycle that has not been oiled for a while. You still make progress when pedalling, but you have to pedal much harder and it takes longer to cover a distance. A similar thing happens with your paper shredder when the cutting rollers get dusty.

Where and how often is paper shredder oil used?

Roughly speaking, wherever document shredders are used. In general, shredders of all types should be oiled. Strip-cut shredders, however, usually need to be oiled less often, as they process less paper and also only cut the inserted document lengthwise. In general, such shredders should be oiled every 2 months. Shredders that work with a particle cut need to be oiled more frequently.

Due to the additional horizontal cut and the high number of particles produced in one cutting pass, the cutting rollers are subjected to greater stress than with strip cutting. Oil should therefore be applied every time the shredder is emptied, but no less than twice a month.

How much does paper shredder oil cost?

Basically, the price depends on what form of oil you use. There are price differences between oil in bottles and oil paper. The cheapest is oil for drizzling, which is applied directly to the cutting rollers and can be used for all types of cutting. You can buy 250 ml for about 5 euros. Oiled paper is somewhat more expensive. It is fed into the shredder via the paper feed. 10 sheets are available from 16 euros.

The most expensive is oil in 1 litre canisters. The price is over 50 euros. However, especially for document shredders that should be oiled more often because of their frequent use and high cutting performance, this size is recommended despite the higher price. Keep in mind that with well-maintained devices, service costs decrease as the intervals between which a technician needs to be called become longer.

Decision: What types of paper shredder oil are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between three different types of paper shredder oils:

  • Bottle oil
  • Spray oil
  • Oiled paper

All types offer different advantages as well as disadvantages, which are mainly determined by their intended use. Depending on various factors, different oil options are more or less suitable for your household.

Examples include the model of the shredder, how easy it is to reach the cutting rollers or the location where it is used. Below we take a closer look at the differences between the various types and show you which type of oil is best for you.

Did you know that most shredder oil is made from environmentally friendly materials? However, you should keep this oil out of reach and safe for children.

How does bottled shredder oil work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

With bottled oil, there are two ways to apply the oil. In the first method, the oil is simply emptied directly onto the cutting rollers. The oil is distributed drop by drop along the entire length of the roller. Since dosing is done by hand, exact dosing is the biggest problem.

Advantages
  • Cost-effective
  • Self-dosing
Disadvantages
  • Dosing is done by hand
  • More suitable for experts

Too much oil can cause damage to the cutter, too little oil can lead to no effect at all. That is why the shredder oil from the bottle is more suitable for professionals. The second method is easier for private users, as the oil from the bottle is applied to a sheet of paper, which is then shredded.

Care should also be taken with the dosage and even application of the oil in a zigzag pattern to cover the entire grinder. This should be done on a suitable surface, as the oil can easily contaminate unprotected surfaces.

How does spray oil work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Basically, spray oil hardly differs from the alternative variant from the bottle. The spray attachment facilitates oiling the cutting rollers and prevents overdosing.

Advantages
  • Easy handling
  • Less dirt
  • Beginner-friendly
Disadvantages
  • Inaccurate application

In addition to easier handling, there is also no risk of soiling furniture, tables or other surfaces with the oil, as can happen when oil is applied to paper.

How does oiled paper work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

An oiled paper is a thin, DIN A4 sized packet filled with oil. The packet is shredded just like normal paper. During the shredding process, the oil is distributed in the cutting rollers.

Advantages
  • Convenient and simple
  • Easy to apply
  • Environmentally friendly
Disadvantages
  • Relatively expensive

This makes oiled paper a very easy and effective method of oiling paper shredders. Oiled paper is particularly advantageous for shredders with a particle-cutting function, as these have a more complex cutting mechanism and the oil thus reaches difficult places more easily than oil from a bottle or with a spray attachment.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate paper shredder oil

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate paper shredder oil. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a certain product is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:

  • Manufacturer's specifications & recommendations
  • Type of cut of the shredder
  • Accessibility of the cutting rollers

In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.

Manufacturer's information & recommendation

Essential: Before you decide on a particular oil, you should read the user manual of your shredder to see what the manufacturer recommends.

Did you know that you should take a look at your shredder before you buy? Some shredders have special oils that are made for the exact model. Such oils are preferable to others.

Many manufacturers offer oils specifically designed for their shredders. If the manufacturer of your shredder offers an oil for it, this oil should be your first choice. If damage occurs due to the use of a different oil, in the worst case the warranty will be voided.

Type of shredder

Strip-cut shredders and particle-cut shredders are designed for different cutting capacities and cutting volumes. When choosing the right oil, you should therefore always make sure that it is designed for the type of cut you are using.

Particle-cut shredders with higher security levels in particular have a different lubrication requirement due to the additional metal edges, which should be covered by the right oil.  Strip-cut shredders or shredders with lower security levels in general can also be lubricated with oils that can be used for all cutting types.

Accessibility of the cutting rollers

Your shredder is a compact device. For safety reasons, the cutting rollers are often difficult or impossible to reach directly. If you want to avoid lubricating the cutting rollers only after using screwdrivers and similar tools, you should rather use oiled paper.

This can be inserted into the paper feed without any further action. The rest will take care of itself. However, for better lubrication, some manufacturers recommend that you switch on the reverse mode of the shredder after shredding the oiled paper.

There are various methods for oiling the cutting rollers of your paper shredder. Depending on the effort and accessibility of the rollers, you can choose between oil or oiled paper.

If you have no problems using tools or if the cutting rollers of your paper shredder are quite easy to reach anyway, it is recommended that you use paper shredder oil. This is dribbled directly onto the cutting rollers. If you do find that manual oiling is difficult, you can simply drizzle a sheet of paper with shredder oil and feed it into the machine through the paper feed.
