The selenium in sodium selenite has a strengthening effect on the immune system and reduces the amount of virus in the blood. Vegetarians and vegans in particular benefit from the dietary supplement sodium selenite. This is due to the fact that natural selenium is mainly found in fish, seafood and meat.

How is sodium selenite dosed?

Men need a higher dose of sodium selenite than women.

Men should have a slightly higher selenium content in their organism than women. In fact, however, women only absorb 38 µg/day and men only 9 µg/day more. Drops, however, have a much lower sodium selenite concentration, as one drop contains about 10 µg of sodium selenite, which means that the amount of sodium selenite can be individually dosed.

A vial of 50 grams thus contains a total of 10,000 µg of sodium selenite. Sodium selenite in powder form can usually also be individually dosed and thus adapted to health conditions. In this case, 28 grams of powder contain about 4000 µg. Before you make your purchase, it is therefore very important to find out in which concentration sodium selenite is present in the respective product form, so that you can decide for yourself how much you should consume and which product form is therefore suitable.


Bioavailability is another criterion that plays a role in the purchase decision of sodium selenite. This parameter shows how quickly a substance is absorbed and in what quantities it remains unchanged in the bloodstream.

Sodium selenite in capsule, drop and powder form is generally characterised by a very high bioavailability.

This is especially the case when magnesium stearate from fatty acids is not used as a separating agent. Sodium selenite has the most optimal bioavailability in physiological saline solution and in drop form, as the solution is very well adapted to the condition and functioning of the organism.

In contrast to organic selenium, as found in selenomethionine and selenocysteine, the bioavailability of inorganic selenium, as is sodium selenite, is somewhat lower. Sodium selenite is absorbed by about 50-60 percent. If a high bioavailability and thus a longer half-life or faster effectiveness is important to you, you should use food supplements that do not contain magnesium stearate but a second selenium compound in addition to sodium selenite.

What does a selenium-containing diet mean?

In addition to the dietary supplement sodium selenite, you should also fight your selenium deficiency with a selenium-containing diet.

Sodium selenite is most commonly found in fish, eggs and red muscle meat.

Inorganic sodium selenite can be combined with organic forms of selenium known as selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Eating fish, seafood, eggs and red muscle meat in particular increases the selenium content of your organism. For vegetarians and vegans, garlic is also an optimal source of selenium. The combination of vitamin C and sodium selenite is considered critical in research. Vitamin C amounts that reach a value of more than 1 gram inhibit the absorption capacity of selenium and thus also sodium selenite in the intestine. The body's optimal access to sodium selenite is then limited, as the vitamin C ensures that the inorganic sodium selenite is altered.

This altered form of the mineral compound is not present in the human organism and can therefore harm the organism. However, smaller amounts of vitamin C in combination with the inorganic sodium selenite can also be beneficial. For example, small amounts of vitamin C even promote the absorption capacity of selenium in the intestine. If you take both substances at different times (about 60 minutes), no complications should arise.
