The Best Soft Soap: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a soft soap

What is soft soap?

Soft soap is a form of soap that is made by decomposing animal and vegetable fats. What is special about soft soap is that potash lye is added during the manufacturing process. This makes the consistency pasty to liquid. Soft soap is often also called "green soap" or "gold soap".

Soft soap is a well-known all-purpose product that you can use in many ways. For example, it can be used in the household to clean floors and outdoors to combat vermin.

What is the difference between curd and soft soap?

The difference in soaps lies in the manufacturing process. As already mentioned, soft soap is enriched with potash lye (potassium hydroxide). This gives the soap its greasy initial form. In contrast, in the case of curd soap, the soap glue is boiled with sodium salts in a further production step.

This makes the curd soap hard and not overgreasy. Curd soap, like soft soap, can be used in many ways, e.g. as a detergent or for foot care. A hot footbath with curd soap is especially helpful for inflamed nail beds.

For which areas can I use soft soap?

You can use soft soap for cleaning indoors and outdoors. At home, you can use the green soap to clean the floor and to remove stubborn stains, for example on your dishes. Outdoors, the soft soap is perfect for cleaning floor coverings. It is especially suitable for wooden terraces, as the soft soap has a regreasing effect and leaves a protective film.

If you have a problem with aphids, diluted soft soap is also a well-known remedy. In addition, you can use the green soap to free garden furniture and flower pots from green cover and moss.

What are the alternatives to soft soap?

Nowadays, there is a wide range of cleaning utensils. You can either buy ready-made mixtures in the supermarket, use other soaps or home remedies. Here we have listed possible alternatives to soft soap for you:

Alternative Properties Applications
Curd soap Solid soap, without regreasing As a cleaning agent, detergent, or, if not perfumed, for brushing teeth. As the soap has no refatting substances, it is not suitable for body hygiene.
Cleaning spray from the supermarket Ready mix with ingredients for cleaning, Different sprays for different surfaces Cleaning spray suitable for different surfaces. Note the area of application described on the front.
Home remedies: baking powder, soda, vinegar soda helps against grease, vinegar + citric acid against limescale, baking powder for cleaning the oven Various surfaces and household objects, such as washing machine or teapot.

Home remedies are an environmentally friendly and effective alternative to ready-made cleaning products from the supermarket.

Decision: What types of soft soap are there and which one is right for you?

If you decide to clean with soft soap, you have several options. Depending on what you prefer, you can use liquid or solid soft soap. When it comes to soft soap, it depends on what you want to use it for. You can choose between the following soft soaps:

  • Soft soap for indoor use
  • Soft soap for outdoor use

The handling and the field of application of the soft soap brings advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the purpose for which you want to use the soft soap, you should consider a few things. In the next section, we would like to make your decision easier.

What are the characteristics of a soft soap for indoor use and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Soft soap can be used in many ways indoors. Soft soap has the effect of dissolving and absorbing dirt and oily substances. You can use it to clean windows, laundry, floors, dishes, carpets or upholstered furniture. As already mentioned, soft soap is available in liquid or solid form.

Depending on your preference, you can choose between the two. For cleaning the floor, the liquid soap is recommended. You can put it in a bucket of water and start right away.

Advantages
  • Suitable for many objects
  • Environmentally friendly
Disadvantages
  • Not suitable for laminate or linoleum floors
  • Solid soft soap harder to use for cleaning

When cleaning the floor, basically all floor coverings can be cleaned with the green soap. However, you should use other products for laminate and linoleum, as it can damage the material. In contrast, soft soap gives parquet and wooden floors a long-lasting shine thanks to its re-greasing properties.

What are the characteristics of a soft soap for outdoor use and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Outdoor soft soap is the same as indoor soft soap. You can either choose to buy it in liquid or solid form. Outdoor soft soap is suitable for a wide range of objects. For example, you can use it to clean the patio from green coverings. Especially wood, but also stone floors, get a slightly shiny surface due to the greasing property. The soap is also excellent for removing dirt from garden furniture.

Advantages
  • Various applications
  • Fights vermin
  • Environmentally friendly
Disadvantages
  • Soft soap must first be dissolved
  • Not for all floor coverings

Soft soap is not only good for cleaning. If you have a problem with aphids, soft soap is the ultimate miracle cure. If the infestation is very stubborn or you don't know what kind of aphids it is, extra spirit will help.

Soft soap is a natural product and can degrade completely. This means that nature and groundwater are not harmed.

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate soft soaps on the basis of these factors

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the possible soft soaps. The criteria that you can use to compare the soft soaps with each other consist of:

  • Area of application
  • Floor type
  • Ingredients
  • Solid vs. liquid

In the following paragraphs, we will explain to you what is important in the individual criteria.

Application area

The area of application plays an important role in the purchase of your soft soap. First of all, you should ask yourself whether you want to use the soft soap for small things/areas, such as cleaning dishes or removing stains, or for large areas.

Soft soap is very often sold cheaply in bulk. This is ideal for cleaning large areas, such as patios, or for use against bugs in the garden. The liquid version is also advantageous here, as it can dissolve quickly and easily in water.

For smaller areas, such as cleaning stubborn stains, a small soft soap is usually sufficient. It is usually easier to handle and not as heavy. For small areas, you can decide according to preference whether to use liquid or solid soft soap.

Floor type

To get the best result when cleaning the floor, it is also important to use the right cleaning agent.

Soft soap has a regreasing effect and leaves a protective layer on the floor after cleaning.

This is especially ideal for wooden floors - whether outdoors or indoors. As already mentioned, however, it should not be used for laminate or linoleum, as it can damage the material. When buying, you should also make sure that no additional ingredients, such as fragrances or chemicals, are used in the soft soap. This can damage some floor coverings. As an alternative to soft soap, you can of course also use a special wood floor soap to care for your wooden floor.

Ingredients

The classic soft soap is a natural product and is produced without fragrances. Nowadays, mostly vegetable fats are used for the production. The soft soap has a pH value of 8.5 - 9.5 and is therefore also suitable for people with allergies.

When choosing a soft soap, pay attention to the ingredients. Ideally, they should contain no fragrances and be made from high-quality oils, such as linseed, rapeseed and hemp oil.

Solid vs. liquid

Whether you choose the solid or liquid form is entirely up to you and your preferences. Both types of soft soap have the same cleansing effect. Solid soft soap takes longer to dissolve in water. However, if you use warm water, this should not be a problem. Unlike the solid version, liquid soft soap dissolves quickly in water. The price of both types of soft soap is about the same.

Whether you use solid or liquid soft soap, both have the same intensive cleaning effect on different surfaces.

Facts worth knowing about soft soap

How is soft soap made?

Soft soap is the end product of saponification. In saponification, fats are boiled with a lye. The raw soap contains glycerine, alkali and salts. Afterwards, the raw soaps are separated. This is used for purification. The raw soap is then mixed with hot water so that it becomes a uniform liquid. The longer the chain length of the released fatty acid and the lye, the more solid the soap becomes.

In the case of soft soap, this is potash lye, which gives the soap a semi-solid to liquid consistency. The consistency of soft soap can be mixed very well with water and is therefore excellent for various cleaning jobs indoors and outdoors.

What is Kali soft soap?

Potash soft soap or potash soap is a soap that comes from the medical field. It is a mixture of linseed oil fatty acids and potash salts. In contrast to soft soap, potash soap is a soft mass that is yellowish to brownish in colour. You can use potash soft soap to control lice and vermin in the garden. In addition, it has a cleansing effect. It is often used for abscesses and skin diseases.

How do I use soft soap against aphids?

Aphids can be a great nuisance for your plants in the garden or on the balcony. Soft soap is a real secret weapon here. We have put together these 5 steps for you to successfully combat the pests:

  1. Take 30 grams of solid soft soap, 1 litre of water and a large container
  2. Dissolve the soft soap in hot water
  3. Let the solution cool
  4. Pour the solution into your container
  5. Spray the undiluted solution on the aphids. If necessary, you can repeat the process.

If this basic recipe is not enough and the aphids still infest your plants, an alternation can help. Add two teaspoons of alcohol to the finished soft soap solution. This will remove even the most stubborn aphids, such as blood or scale insects.
