Buying and evaluation criteria for stainless steel bowls

You can't decide between the many stainless steel bowls? You don't know which ones are suitable for your purposes? That's why we have put together some criteria that you should consider when buying a stainless steel bowl.

The following criteria are decisive for the comparison:

In order to make your purchase decision easier, we will explain to you what the individual criteria are.

Stainless steel bowls are available in a wide range of sizes so that they can be used for any purpose. Therefore, the purchase depends largely on what you want to use the stainless steel bowl for.

If you are looking for a stainless steel bowl to store or serve food, small stainless steel bowls of up to 1 litre are suitable. If you want to use the stainless steel bowl as a mixing or salad bowl, we recommend at least 2 litres - 2.5 - 3 litres is better.

Stainless steel bowls are often offered in sets of 0.75 - 5 litres. The good thing about this is that you are equipped for every type of use and save a lot of space thanks to the stackable sets.

Quality of the material

Stainless steel bowls are odourless, tasteless and particularly hygienic. The term "stainless" is widespread but not very meaningful. Stainless steel is only rustproof when it contains at least 13% chromium. Therefore, when buying a stainless steel bowl, you should look for the designation 18/8 or 18/10.

But what do these numbers mean? The first digit refers to the percentage of chromium that makes the steel stainless. The second digit indicates the percentage of nickel and ensures that stainless steel bowls are acid-resistant. The material of stainless steel bowls of the WMF brand is also called Cromargan and consists of 18/10 stainless steel.

Stainless steel bowls have a higher own weight than a plastic bowl and therefore ensure a firm stand. Stainless steel bowls with a silicone base provide extra stability and prevent the bowls from sliding on the work surface.

The silicone base has a sound-absorbing property, which reduces noise when preparing food.

A wide rim ensures easy handling. An additional all-round pouring rim prevents injuries and makes it easier to pour out and portion liquids.

More and more often, stainless steel bowls are engraved with measuring scales. The internal scaling allows the quantities to be measured directly and thus makes cooking and preparing food easier.

Precisely fitting lids ensure safe transport without leaking. The food is thus kept fresh and can be stored in the refrigerator without any problems.

Stainless steel bowls with grating inserts are a special feature. The inserts can be attached to the centre of the lid and are ideal for collecting the grated vegetables directly in the bowl.

Stainless steel bowls are a real asset in the kitchen thanks to their versatile functionality. Hot food stays hot longer due to the heat conductivity. The heat-resistant stainless steel bowls without a silicone base can be integrated directly into the cooking process.

Cool food not only stays cold longer, but can also be easily frozen in stainless steel bowls with leak-proof lids.

In addition, stainless steel bowls with a high nickel content are wonderfully suitable for making doughs or acidic marinades and can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher.

However, if you are allergic to nickel, you should avoid stainless steel bowls and use other materials.

What types of stainless steel bowls are there?

Stainless steel bowls come in different designs and differ mainly in shape and size.

Large, bulbous stainless steel bowls are particularly suitable for doughs and large quantities. The depth of the bowls prevents food from splashing out when stirring. Stainless steel bowls that are tall and narrow are ideal for whipping liquids with a mixer or blender. In taller bowls, the beaters reach the liquid and it can expand upwards.

If you tend to prepare smaller quantities or use the bowls as cereal or fruit bowls, you should choose a small stainless steel bowl of up to one litre.

Oval shapes are particularly suitable for children and pets, as the stainless steel bowls do not fall over so easily. For the catering sector, square stainless steel bowls are often used for catering and buffets.

What does a stainless steel bowl cost?

Depending on the size and features of the stainless steel bowls, the cost varies. Stainless steel bowls are usually more expensive compared to other bowls made of plastic. Individual bowls start at a price of 5 euros. In sets, stainless steel bowls are available from 25 euros.

The following table gives you an overview of the price range.

Price range Available products
Low-priced (5 - 25 €) Mostly individual bowls, few accessories
Medium-priced (25 - 40 €) Simple sets of 3 to 5, mostly with lid
High-priced (from 40 €) Mostly as a set, well-known brands, high-quality finish and elegant design

In the overview you can see that sufficient sets of stainless steel bowls are already available from a medium price range. These often include three to five bowls and accessories such as matching lids. If you spend a little more money, you can be sure of the best quality.

Stainless steel bowls are uncomplicated and easy to clean. You can easily clean them by hand or in the dishwasher. We recommend that you wipe the stainless steel bowls dry with a cloth after washing.

If the dishwasher causes rust to form, you can simply wash it off. However, the plastic lids are not suitable for the dishwasher because they can become deformed or discoloured.

As an all-round talent, the stainless steel bowl is a must-have in every kitchen. Not only does it stand out with its timeless design, it is also more hygienic and of higher quality than other bowls. Thanks to their versatility, temperature resistance and easy cleaning, stainless steel bowls are real all-rounders.

There are different types of stainless steel bowls to suit different requirements. It is important that you consider the size, material quality, handling, features and functionality when buying. Single stainless steel bowls are available from about 5 €. If you want to be prepared for different areas of use, you are on the safe side with a bowl set from 25 €.
